Can I run my hot and neutral to a q250 50 amp double pole breaker and feed the two bus bars that way instead of using the lugs?

Yes the customer can use what is referred to as a back-fed main breaker. However, the manner in which he is describing wiring it is not correct. by using a 50a 2 pole breaker as your back-fed main, your 125a rated panel essentially be a 50a max load panel, which may be correct for his application, but is something to make note of. 2. when using a back-fed main they need to follow the NEC requirements which at a minimum likely require use of a breaker hold down kit. 3. Probably the most important, his description of the wiring would not be correct. He would need to run two hot wires of different phases to the terminals on the back of the breaker, the neutral would connect to the neutral bar. The way it was described sounded as if he wanted to connect the neutral to the back of the breaker, which would be incorrect. this may be one you want to direct our way, or if this is a homeowner, they should likely consult their qualified electrician.

Is the depth of 4.9” correct? As this panel should mount flush with 2x4 framing and 1/2” sheetrock (4” total depth)?
