Works Great
We took in a rescue dog a couple of months ago. He was let go by his former owner because he kept running away and getting picked up by the pound. We were asked by the rescue association to take him in because we have a large fenced in yard with a 6 foot high wood and wire fence. Right away "Freckles" found out a way to get out under the fence. We closed up the hole but he ran away again the next day. This went on for weeks. We would fix the holes and Freckles would find a new place to get out. Thankfully he had a tag with his name and the rescue association's phone number so we would get a phone call within a couple of hours from some friendly neighbor who had captured Freckles. We finally realized that we could not win. Our escape artist was smarter than us. So I started to do research on electronic fences. The best rated fence is the wireless kind, but you need to have a yard that is a perfect circle for that to work. Our yard is a rectangle. If Freckles was allowed to go to the back of the yard the correction area was outside of our fence on the sides. The dog would have been able to get out of the fence and not be "corrected" (shocked) until he was in the neighbor's yard. So I settled on an in-ground fence. Freckles is a Brittany. Brittanys, like beagles, are known for following their noses and running off. He is not being bad - just chasing birds, butterflies, squirrels or his favorite - a rabbit. In the front yard I used an electric edger to dig the shallow 1" trench. This is several inches above the utilities in the front yard - so no worries. In the back yard I ran the wire along the top rail of the wood fence and used plastic zip ties to tie the wire to the top of the wire fence. It took a day to install the fence. When I installed the battery in the collar I had the setting on the wired unit turned all the way up. So I got a shock. It wasn't that bad. It surprised me more than hurt me. I turned the setting down to half as much and now the correction area is within 10 feet of the wire. As Freckles approaches the fence he hears an audible tone to warn him to turn around. If that does not stop him, he gets a shock. Within an hour he learned to stop and turn around when the tone sounded. He learned quickly that he can not go out of the front door or garage door - even with the door wide open. As I showed Freckles his new boundaries I told him to "be careful" as he approached the correction area. It was funny that he was very in tune to my warning to "be careful". When I told him to be careful he would stop and look at me - way before he heard the tone. He is really a smart dog. Finally our escape artist can be free to run the yard and we don't have to worry about him finding a new place to get under the fence. It should be noted that the brains of the system must be inside the house. It can not be exposed to rain or freezing temperatures. I installed ours above the garage door. I ran the wire along the door jamb and then into the ground. It should also be noted that corners can not be run at 90 degrees. All angles must have a 3 foot arch to keep the corner from becoming a dead zone where the dog can get out. The 500 feet that came with the fence was not enough. Our friendly home depot sold us another 500 feet of wire for $25. The wire is not in the electronic section. It was with the ceiling fans. After a lot of research, I decided to purchase the fence from Amazon. They have always been great with their return policy. They also had the best price. I paid the extra $10 to have the fence sent to me in two days. You only save about $40 on a used unit from eBay with a good chance of getting a used unit that doesn't work. The lighting protection unit by this manufacturer is not very well rated. So I purchased a $20 surge protector to plug the extension cord into. I ran the extension cord from the light in the garage door opener to the fence system "brains" above the garage door. I attached the wires in the garage and on the wood fence with small 1 inch fence staples - being very careful not to puncture the wire. Where I had to coil up the extension cord I used a 16 penny nail to hang the wire on. So the bottom line is that this thing is great. Highly recommended.

Great results and uses commodity battery
We moved into a house that already had an in-ground invisible fence installed. When we adopted a stray Pit Bull we were concerned about how well it would work with such a strong dog with unknown behavior. Since the dog had run off before and there are many dogs in the neighborhood I had my doubts that this would work at all for our situation. Our yard was way too big to fence in so we resorted to tying him on a lead which he hated. I purchased this "stubborn dog" model since pit bulls have a high pain tolerance and we were having issues controlling him as is. I was so weary of even trying him on it that the collar sat in a drawer for a couple months! We used a behavioralist to teach us how to work with our dog better and one of our final lessons we decided to set up the flags and see how he responded with the collar. We guided him around the yard on very light rope so he could learn the boundary. When we were finally ready to test it we had it set on 5 (max). When he decided to go beyond the boundary he was yelping and thrashed in a pretty disturbing way. He tested it a second time and again loud screaming as he ran right back to us. This was hard to watch and if I was doing it again I would start with the lowest correction settings like the instructions recommended. The result is that the dog has been very skittish outside now and it has taken quite a while to get him comfortable being outside again Overall though he loves the freedom and it's so much easier just letting him go out the door especially in the winter months. I highly recommend these systems. Yes my dog is pretty spooked by the boundaries to this day. However, I now have the piece of mind that my pit bull won't go sprinting through the neighborhood and get in trouble or danger. Earlier this week as I let him out and a cat was less than 10 feet away. He quickly chased it for a few seconds and stopped immediately as the cat ran out of the yard. Perfect! The best thing about this particular collar is that it takes 9 volt batteries. If you read reviews of other PetSafe collars people complain a lot about the proprietary battery. The fact that this uses 9 volts is great. I haven't even replaced it yet in 6 months of use. This collar as a result is bulky and heavy. I take if off whenever my dog is in the house. The actual collar part is not very high quality and I could envision replacing it down the road if a clip breaks or something. Pros - It works! Your dog will stay in the yard. - Uses 9 volt batteries and gets good battery life. - Highest correction probably too strong but works on big or aggressive dogs. Cons - Heavier and bulkier than standard Petsafe collar. You won't want to leave it on all the time. - The strap on the collar is flimsy and will probably fail before the actual receiver does.

Works but careful how you install
After a pretty lengthy install, it worked out pretty well. The biggest thing is if you don't plan on closing in your entire house, you're going to have to loop it around if you're simply doing the backyard. Basically I had to first run it from the unit all the way on top of my fence down the fence then into the ground back to the unit. It's kind of hard to explain, but you basically cannot cross your back door because it will shock the dog every time they come in and out. Just be mindful of that when you go to install it

It's GREAT. But, it all comes down to what kind of dog you have
I've had this system installed for almost two years now. It has delivered on every promise and saved us from having to purchase a fence and gate to go between our home and detached garage. Installation: The install is easy and straightforward. The tip to use a drill to wind the wire (for areas that you do not want to be secured) works great. Me and my ten year old son knocked out the install in a couple of hours on a 1/4 acre backyard. Training: As many have mentioned, do not hurry the training. Take your time and follow the instructions to the letter. My experience using it for 22 months: It works perfectly. However, I quickly realized that part of the reason it works so well is that my dog is really a wimp. We have never had to move the collar setting past the lowest. She has only ever been zapped maybe 4-5 times, including during the training. She hears the buzz and she stops. She will not chase a ball past the line and trample our garden, and she will not escape into the street. If you have a dog that simply doesn't care about the pain and would rather deal with it to get out of your property, then this may not work for you. To illustrate how well this has worked for me, I changed the battery in the collar for the first time today. I expect the next battery may last three years or more. Notes: We hoped that our dog may stop needing the collar to go out. But this has proven false. She still doesn't run away but she is smart enough to test the boundaries and wander past them if she gets a chance. The collar has been great in rain, snow, heat etc. We don't have to worry about a tight fit because the sound it emits is enough to keep her in the yard. I was so pleased that I was able to place the wires so that it only protected two areas: The vegetable garden, and the opening where she could escape to the street (these areas are pretty far apart). All I had to do was wind the wires according to the instructions everywhere except where I wanted it to act as a fence. In the areas I wanted to it act as a fence, I made sure the single wire stayed at least 5 feet away from the other side of the loop. What needs improvement? Almost nothing. I do wish there were more accurate settings for how far your dog can be from the wire to make it give the warning ring. But it's close enough to not be a big issue.

Worth the money, easy DIY install
Simple installation. It is extremely effective for larger, challenging dogs. May be to much of a jolt for smaller breeds, I tested it on myself. Positive training, I would walk the perimeter a few times for a couple days with them on leash after install and flags. It only took 2 times for my dog to get the boundary. Only thing I would like is louder beeps with more distance warning.

A HEADACHE! Works for a few months then the loop goes out & starts beeping
Buy this if you love to have to make immediate trips to your local hardware store, spending Saturdays working on a project that you've already worked on and know that any results of your labor will likely be lost within a few weeks to months, you enjoy being on hold while waiting to talk to a customer service agent that will have you run in circles. After over a year of trying to make this system work, I am so frustrated that I wasted so much time (think all day on MANY Saturdays while my young family is playing, I am working on the fence line) and money buying new replacement wire that was probably never required. Background. We live in the house I grew up in. Growing up we had an invisible fence installed by a local company. It worked like a charm for over 15 years. Yes, there were occasional breaks when we would aerate the yard or dig a hole. But those were easy to locate and fix. Never had ANY "partial break" issues. So when we get a dog and decide to use the system, I can't find the collar from the old system. Buying a new collar was more expensive than the whole PetSafe system so I decided to give it a go. It worked fine for about 6 months then we started having issues with the loop light going off and beeping. Randomly at first and sometimes it would just turn back to normal by itself. Sometimes I would turn off the power and back on and it would work again. Sometimes I would have to plug in the "Break Locator" and after that (and not finding any breaks with the locator or any visual/breaks nicks) it would magically work again but only for a time. We got a new transmitter. Worked for a couple months. Same issues as before. So I was told by PetSafe that it must be a "partial break again." All the wire was buried, so there was no way to visually see any partial breaks. PetSafe's own break located could not pick up any breaks. Just showed a signal as strong as can be around the whole loop. I replaced all the wire in our yard to 14ga. I pulled up any old sections. Then we got a 3rd transmitter in January. Last week it started with the random beeping. Today I came home to it beeping. It turned off the first time I switched the power on/off. But then beeped again. Spent the good part of an hour on the phone with PetSafe who is still convinced it's a "partial break." We haven't done any yard work. I don't understand how in 3 months a wire could just randomly partially break without something actually physically happening to it. We were also told it could be that the wire is wrapped too tight or not tight enough somewhere. Really???? If that's the case why would it work for 3 months and then go out. I do not have any sanity left to deal with this. I am searching for an alternative and would love any recommendation.

You Won't Regret It!!
Worth it's weight in gold!! To see my dogs running around full speed after each other and having the time of their lives.... I swear after installing this product I all but teared up for days seeing my dogs having so much fun!! I can't afford a physical fence and I really delayed on purchasing an electric fence bc I felt like it might be cruel if they get shocked and didn't wanna waste my money in case it didn't deter them from running off. They really have taken right to it!!! There is a beep training method we used a few times while walking them around the yard. After maybe 4 training sessions I let my lab off leash and dropped my pit bull's leash but kept it on. They got shocked once each within the first day or two when they were flying around playing and I have to admit.... it didn't feel too bad to see them jump super high and rush back. I did laugh my ass off! All those times they blatantly ignored me calling them.... Feels a tad bit like karma. Anyway, I love them, I swear! They were super cautious after the shock but with reassurance they were out there playing hard within minutes! My lab quickly understood the boundaries but it did take my pit bull about a week to feel comfortable with coming out and learning the boundaries. I'd go into the yard and crouch down and then he'd come out and stay out for the most part. They respond to the warning beeps and dont even go near the boundaries much at all. They have once both went across the road when we were outside for awhile and I wasn't paying super close attention and my lab went over the boundary in the yard once (we have some dog free kid spaces) but other than those two times no escapes. recently they've been so good!!! other dogs walk by... barking, of course, and getting sort of close to the boundary but not rushing it, not going over it. people come by, kids playing: they know where they can and cant go and they have really been respecting it! I want to be outside while they're outside, I might walk in to do something quickly but they've been left unattended several times and when I go back out, they're still in the yard, exploring, playing, chillin, diggin a hole... lol. So glad I got this! Install was hard but only in strength and stamina with digging and reburying - instructions are very straight forward. I was a bit surprised that the collars take batteries, those rectangle ones that will shock you if you touch your tongue to them... but that's ok, so far they haven't died so not a big deal. One thing that helped me feel more comfortable with this boundary was that I'd already trained my dogs on e-collars so I kept those on (and still should probably) so that if they did leave the boundary I would be able to use the e-collars to avoid much danger!
