Just wondering why get them this instead of a real tape measure?

It is larger so it is easier for a child to handle. AND, it is much safer. I've cut a finger on a real tape measure before and it hurts, plus it usually bleeds. Some of them will recoil unexpectedly. I bought this for a 4 yr. old, not a 10 yr. old. An older child can probably handle a real tape measure, but then again, I wouldn't trust some of them with one.

does it have the words "ft" or "feet" to show measurement in feet?

It reads "ONE FOOT, TWO FEET, ONE YARD, and ONE METER" at the corresponding measurement.

How is the tape retracted?

It has a handle on the other side so your child and wheel it back in like a fishing rod.

Does the tape measure make a "clicking" noise while being retracted?

Yes a mild noise being pulled out and retracting.. kids seem to like the clicks noise…
