Review: Highly recommend - Excellent instructions and ease of installation. My whole house is now protected. Fyi, this model requires a 50 amp double breaker.
Review: Great value! Works well. - Installed this on my 23 year old electrical panel because there was no existing surge protection. Disclaimer: DO NOT INSTALL THIS YOURSELF unless you are 100% confident in your electrical knowledge. There are a few things I would mention for fellow DIY electricians: Check to make sure your panel has a 1/2" knockout available on the BOTTOM of the panel. This is because if you only have them on the top or side and your box is located outdoors you're not going to get a water tight seal since there is no O-ring. Make sure EVERYTHING is off before you attempt to wire this in as you're most likely going to have to move some live wires around. Try to place this as close as you can to the 50A 2-Pole circuit breaker as the wires aren't very long and it will work best with the shortest wire leads possible. Also, make sure you buy a 50A breaker that is the same brand as your existing breakers, I had to do some research to find both a compatiable breaker for my load center. It is a violation of electrical code to use another brand breaker than you already have installed. I discovered that EATON bought Culter-Hammer years ago so if you've got an older load center like mine it is OK to use EATON breakers so long as they are the same size/fit for your load center. Mine ended up being the "CH" style. While it is possible to use this with a 30A breaker it will be a waste of money to buy this model as it can only provide the fully rated surge capacity of 108KA with a 50A breaker. I had to move some breakers around to fit another 2-pole breaker on the panel and add a double breaker to remove one to have enough room. Inspect your panel before purchasing to make sure you have room for the required breaker... you are not allowed to double-tap any existing breakers! Overall I would say this is a great product, maybe a bit much for some people who aren't familiar with wiring or electrical codes, but if you are I highly recommend this one to save you hundreds if not thousands toward paying an licensed electrician to put in surge protection.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Why only one view of the product? I dont see the pigtail wires. Does it have wires or does it snap into place like a breaker? ???**
A: I does have 4 pigtail wires. It does not snap in. 2 pigtails tie to the breaker you choose, one wire to the neutral and one to the ground bar. It is mounted in one of the knockouts on the main breaker panel. If this is installed on an existing breaker panel, you might have to cut an opening in the wall. I recommend paying the few extra bucks for the cover plate. It is a really good looking install. I mounted mine on one of the bottom left side knockouts. Just Google Eaton surge protector installed to see some pics.

**Q: Can this be located on the inside of the breaker panel, provided there is enough space for it?**
A: Agree with all of the below/above- you are probably going to have to mount outside for the reasons mentioned and it is markedly less effective but STILL indicated and useful. On my other hosue i had a square D panel and 2 open adjacent slots near the 220 entry for the SChneider breaker type surge arrestors0thsi is even better, but rarely an option for most established panels. When these are consumed by a surge you pop another one in -the INTERMATIC external device is interesting as well as it has replaceable sacrificial modules.

**Q: What is the length of the wires that come with the unit?**
A: Just got mine 8-26-21.
The 4 wire leads on this unit are each a slightly different length, but average around 13".

**Q: how does this work? Why doesn't the surge go through whole panel / other circuits...**
A: When the voltage rises above 300 volts, the MOV in this unit makes a short circuit. The short circuit has very low resistance -- far less than the resistance of almost any other device in your house. Electricity takes the path of least resistance. So the electricity goes (mostly) through this unit, instead of through your other devices. When the voltage drops below 300 volts, this MOV un-makes the short, and the electricity then flows normally again.

MOV means Metal Oxide Varister. "Varister" means Variable Resistor. It has very high resistance whenever the voltage is low, and very low resistance when the voltage is high. So, normally, hardly any power goes through this unit. But when a voltage surge happens, almost all of the power goes through this unit, and almost none of it goes through your computers and TVs.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ lots of protection, good performance
*by A***R on January 16, 2022*

I recommend it. This item has a history of good performance. I added it as increased protection over what the electrician installed when we built the house. I told the electrician he did a great job wiring my house (I inspected it as the house was being built), and because I was nice to him, he installed a 5K device in the outside box for free, which provides minimal protection (some, but not enough to make me comfortable). So, I got this Eaton device for extra protection at 108K and put it in the box in the garage. I didn't have room to put it inside the box, so I installed directly to the side of the box (see picture). Super easy to install. As other reviews mention, you need a 50A breaker, so read the product instructions and get exactly what the instructions say to get. And as some other reviews mention, nothing will protect from a direct lightning strike, so don't expect that kind of protection. At 108K (more than 20 times the protection of the 5K device in the outside box), this unit gives me peace of mind. Notice in the picture the two green lights are lit, which means it's functioning properly. I like how I can see it easily whenever I'm in the garage. I drive into the garage and think, "Yep, still protected." I forgot to mention...before you go buy the 50amp breaker, FIRST check your load center (i.e., panel box) to see what type it is, such as, for example, QO or Homeline. If, for example, you buy an HOM 50amp breaker, it won't fit in a QO panel, and vice versa. And, just so you know, the wires are supposed to be short. Some reviewers complain about them being too short such that the unit doesn't fit in their panel. The wires are short for a reason; if you extend the wires beyond their limited length, you risk the device not functioning properly when you need it. So, just because you might not understand the design (e.g., why the wires are so short), don't complain and bash the device as being a poor design.
