KEYCAGE - the smart Carbon Key Organizer - Made in Germany

I love this thing. I carry about 6 keys regularly and while I didn't have any issues with them creating holes in my pockets, I liked the idea of keeping the keys in a nice, tight manner to avoind the jangling and tangling associated with keys on a traditional keyring. The Carbocage fit the bill and looks really cool as well. I carry it with my truck fob and a seperate smaller ring with my two work keys. It has been working out just fine for me for 7 years. I kept all of the included hardware (a rarity for me) so I can expand and contract well into the future.

I did a fair amount of research before settling on the product, and I'm glad I did. It works exactly as advertised, and although it looks like it's made out of cheap plastic, the carbon fiber material seems to be extremely strong. I've been using mine for months and there's not a single scratch visible. The main reason I wanted to review this product was to offer some tips. If for any reason you lose the original hardware kit that comes with it, the good news is that most of the parts are easy to replace with parts you can find at any major hardware store. The screws that hold it together are metric M4-0.7 flat head machine screws, which were available at my local store in a variety of lengths up to 30mm, which is the size I ended up using to jam ton of stuff into my Carbocage. I couldn't find washers that quite match the originals, but 5/32" neoprene washers work great. (If you opt for washers made of a rigid material, go for a slightly larger size, because the neoprene washers I got need to stretch a bit to fit onto the screws.) If you're dealing with odd-shaped items, it can also help to get creative with the placement of the O-rings; just make sure you have two on each side, because the squishiness of the rubber creates tension that keeps the screws from coming loose; if you don't install them properly, the screws will loosen noticeably over the course of a few days. Another thing that helped with some of the more funny-shaped keys was to use some 5/8" metal washers that I happened to have lying around. A nice thing about of replacing the screws is that the original ones require a 2.5mm hex wrench (included in the package) to open, but the replacements I found are slotted for a Philips screwdriver. That's a big plus for me because one of the items in my Carbocage is a knife ( SOG Key Folding Knife KEY102-CP - 1.5" Blade, Brass Stainless Steel Handle ). If I forget to remove it before flying, and I get caught by the TSA, I can remove it with the multitool I always carry ( Gerber Dime Travel Bladeless Knife ). Since I don't normally carry hex wrenches, getting busted with the original screws in place could be a major hassle! One final bit of advice, or more of a warning, really: if you're as fussy as I am, you can expect to disassemble and re-arrange your keys a couple of dozen times before you get everything just right, and if you're buying a product like this, you probably are as fussy as I am, so plan on spending at least an hour to two experimenting.

What prompted me to spend $30 to organize some keys in my pocket? I was wearing pants at work and the keys were sharply poking into my pockets and I thought there has to be a solution to this problem. This brought me to this product. I leaned towards Carbocage over other options primarily because it seemed smaller, had tighter screws and no leather that would wear out. Let’s see how it performs in reality. The product looks good and is well machined with no sharp edges. It includes all the necessary parts to extend it including an optional key ring addon (the source of my biggest frustration). Installation was fairly straight forward, however you have to be a little dextrous to stack and make sure nothing falls apart before screwing together. It does take some strategy behind how to place which keys where. Now to use. My 4 keys and 3 store mini reward cards all fit fine in a neat little package solving my problem of sharp keys poking my pants. My biggest gripe is that with the added key ring adapter and attaching something to the key ring (in my case my car fob), any key on that side is difficult to use. I have shown an example photo of using a key in my door. You can see that I have to grab my car fob in addition to the Carbocage to turn the key. It’s just awkward and potentially in my case introduces the possibility that I will unlock or set off my car alarm while turning the key. This is entirely dependent on what you have attached. If you don’t use the key ring adapter it is a nonissue. Pros - does organize the keys well - has a small footprint with keys on each side - provides lots of pieces to make it very flexible - is lightweight and not intrusive - does accommodate plastic store reward cards - looks nice if you are into carbon fiber - seems well made (time will tell) Cons - in reality it is slower to access your keys - if you use the optional key ring piece, any thing attached to the key ring may potentially impede the keys partially. - While the setup was ok for me, those that are less dextrous may have a little difficulty

Took some time to put together. Had to think about how I wanted the keys oriented. Once I got it together, it’s awesome! While it does add some bulk, all of my keys are in a neat orderly pile inside the Keycage. The instructions were pretty good but I just figured it out on my own. I like that it’s open in the center which makes it easy to push out the key you want. It’s solid and I don’t feel like it’s going to come apart. The bolts seems to not be moving even though the keys do. One piece of advice is use two different length bolts if you have one more key on one end and it will still fit together well. The top for me has three keys and the bottom has two. I used a spacer for the two keys and everything works nicely. I also used a really short gun lock key and it fits well. Overall great item and totally worth the money although a little pricey with no additional features like some key organizers. If it was a bit more affordable, I think it would compete better. No other real complaints. I have been using this for a few weeks now and wish I bought one sooner.

I researched Amazon before buying this product. I looked at several items that were similar and decided on this product for three reasons: 1. Asthetics, It has sleek curvature and conceals the keys well. It is made out of carbon fiber and has deeply eached, 'carbocage' logo across the side. These features make the 8 keys I have look like a pocket tool or folding knife. 2. Construction, the design is German and seemed well engineered from the Amazon pictures. Now that I have it I am experiencing the quality first hand. The curvature of the cage allows for quick access to the desired key and makes it fit easily in my large hand. It is easy to turn the key because the curvature ensures a firm grip. The washers, spacers and grommets allow easy folding of the keys without loosening the hex screw. The extra carbon fiber piece attaches well to the frame to allow a key ring to be added. The open space in the middle of the frame is critical for flipping smaller hard to reach keys. The carbon fiber body is practically weightless while remaining flexible and durable. 3. Amazon reviews, I read a lot of Amazon reviews that spoke very highly of this product. Every feature written about in reviews matched my needs perfectly. The pictures I saw made me believe the product info that was on Amazon. I think that this is a great product. I am very satisfied. I use to carry two sets of key chains with 4 keys each and now I carry one Carbocage. People have complained about the difficulty of configuring the keys especially when dealing with plastic electronic car keys. As you can see in the pictures my 2002 Honda Odyssey key fits perfectly. It takes a solid 15 minutes of configuring to really situate the keys perfectly according to your needs. They give a wide variety of hex screw sizes as well as washers, spacers and grommets. If you are not into putting things together you probably will want someone else to do it for you.

This is an awesome product but a couple things need to be clarified...To start, I purchased the one of the original products of this style, the one that is kinda shaped like a dog bone made of sandwiched pieces of aluminum. I liked it well enough, except for the one big issue that all these products seem to have, they dont support the XL car key with the plastic fingerhold or your car alarm fob. Everyone seems to focus on the XL car key issue, one that is EASILY fixed...GO TO A KEY SHOP AND HAVE A CAR KEY MADE...It will be the same XL size without the plastic end, thus enabling it to fit in these style keyholders AS LONG AS IT IS ONE OF THE LONGER VERSIONS...(The first one I bought was too short and the company now offers the "extended" version. Yay, now out $40 bucks...) This product IS a longer version and hides one of these XL ignition keys easily. The car alarm fob is another story...Whats so much better about this version you ask? First, its lighter. Second, its has a slightly larger diameter so you are able to cover the edges of all keys, thus not chewing up pants pockets. Third, with the inside cut out you can ingeniously access your keys more easily. Lastly, its cool looking (be ready for the "whoa thats cool... WHAT IS IT?" line of questioning, and be ready to show its function/properties in detail if heading into a govt building).Other styles block the middle thus forcing you to open your keys like a pocket knife: you will need 2 hands. I can get to any key with one hand, it just took a little practice...Also this company takes the time to add all the necessary screws, washers etc in the purchase price instead of nicking you for "extra" components....After all my research, trial and error, etc CarboCage is the best keyholder of this style....

This keyholder is well made. It looks like plastic when you first handle it, but it is really really strong, lightweight, carbon steel. I decided to give it a try as a replacement for another popular keyholder I had been using. Unlike the other keyholder, CarboCage comes with all the supplies you need to expand for larger key types. I wanted to add a USB and a utility key-shaped tool to my keyholder, so I went with CarboCage. I tried it for about a month before I bought the expansion pack for my previous keyholder. Nothing about CarboCage failed or broke, but it didn't offer the same convenience as the other keyholder. Prying your keys out from the center is much harder than pushing the key out. I'd often have to use both hands (one to hold, one to pry the key out) to open a lock. Aesthetically, I didn't particularly like the appearance. It looks more like a pocket knife. I also didn't like the logo engraved into the holder. These aesthetic problems are my own. I didn't base my rating on either of those factors only the inconvenient two-handed key extraction method. If you like the design and don't mind having to pry a key out now and then, CarboCage is very, very well-made, strong, and would no doubt last a lifetime. It comes with all the parts you need to expand the number of keys you can hold, and for those, it is a very good value.

I considered many similar products but the design, quality of the product and the variety of screws included in this product made it the clear winner. My keys are now organized, easier to use and in a smaller footprint. Screws still haven't loosened up due to the use of the rubber O-rings (if they eventually do Loctite can fix that). This is a very well thought out, high quality product. I EDC an LED flashlight and knife (often more than one of each) so I wasn't interested in adding those functions to my keyring as some competitors offer. I also have to carry a couple of other keyrings containing barrel keys at work so I was in desperate need of organizing and minimizing my pocketful of keys. The CarboCage KeyCage was the perfect solution for me.

So much better than having the keys rattling around and poking you in your pocket. Highly recommend if you have a few keys that you always keep on you.

Nachdem Facebook mit seiner penetranten KeySmart-Werbung erfolgreich mein Gehirn gewaschen hatte, musste ich natürlich auch unbedingt einen Key-Organizer haben. Keysmart kam aufgrund der schmalen Form nicht in Frage. Auch andere Alternativen wie Bladekey, Orbitkey (instabil) oder Keybar (viel zu teuer!) konnten mich nicht so recht überzeugen. Letztendlich stieß ich auf den deutschen Hersteller Carbocage und dessen neueste Erfindung, "Keycage": Ein aus Carbon gefertigter Schlüsselorganizer, der aufgrund seiner offenen Bauweise geradezu perfekt für meine Ansprüche schien. Einige Youtube-Videos später war für mich klar, dass ich dieses "Ding" haben musste ;-). Geliefert wird der Keycage in einem unscheinbaren Plastiksackerl ohne Aufdruck. Der minimalistischen Verpackung liegt ebenfalls keine Bedienungsanleitung bei, was angesichts des fummeligen und komplizierten Aufbaus sehr schade ist. Nach ca. 20 Minuten hatte ich dann aber die richtige Anordnung der Schlüssel, sowie die richtigen Schrauben gefunden. Dank der Gummiabdichtung an der Außenseite der Schrauben, können diese unterschiedlich fest angezogen werden und somit selbst bestimmt werden, wie leicht oder schwer die Schlüssel zum Aufklappen gehen. Die Carbonöse kann für nicht passende Schlüssel, wie z.B. Autoschlüssel oder alte Keller-/Scheunenschlüssel verwendet werden. Fazit: Für den zwar stolzen, vergleichsweise aber guten Preis von 29€ bietet der Carbocage Keycage alle Vorzüge eines Schlüsselorganizers im "Taschenmesser"-Format. Durch die halboffene Bauweise und das Carbon ist der Keycage federleicht und sieht obendrein sehr schick aus. Die zahlreichen Schrauben und Trennscheiben ermöglichen eine optimale Anpassung, im Gegensatz zu anderen Systemen muss hier nicht eine vorgefertigte Größe bestellt werden, sondern man erhält das Gesamtpaket und ist für alle Eventualitäten bestens gerüstet. Für mich hat sich der Kauf des Keycage in jedem Fall gelohnt :-). ----------------------------- Update (05.12.2015): Auch nach 3 Monaten Dauerbetrieb funktioniert der Keycage einwandfrei. Zwar müssen von Zeit zu Zeit die Schrauben etwas nachgezogen werden, insgesamt gibt es aber keine gröberen Mängel oder Verschleißerscheinungen. ----------------------------- Update (02.05.2016): 8 Monate sind um, und der Keycage verrichtet seinen Dienst völlig unbeschadet und ohne merklichen Verschleiß. Den Gummiring an der Schraube musste ich 1-mal austauschen, aber sonst ist alles noch original und exakt so wie ich es vor 8 Monaten zusaamengebaut habe!! ----------------------------- Update (08.03.2017): Exakt 1 1/2 Jahre ist der Keycage nun dauerhaft bei mir in Verwendung. Als größte Verschleißteile erwiesen sich nach den äußeren Gummiringen, die kleinen Plastik-Trennscheiben. Diese werden durch die ständige Reibung der Schlüssel aneinander mit der Zeit dünner und weiter, bis sie schlußendlich an der dünnsten Stelle brechen. Mittlerweile habe ich alle Trennscheiben aufgebraucht (im Lieferumfang waren 6 Stück), und muss über kurz oder lang nach Alternativen Ausschau halten. Bis auf diesen (nachvollziehbaren) Umstand, funktioniert der Keycage weiterhin tadellos. Er ist mir schon mehrfach heruntergefallen und war oft großen Belastungen ausgesetzt (z.B. bin ich einmal versehentlich drauf gestiegen). Dennoch ist keinerlei Abnutzung erkennbar, der kleine Schlüsselhalter sieht immer noch aus wie neu!

Premetto che l’ho comprato perché ero stanco delle chiavi nel classico mazzo che mi portavo dietro da più di un ventennio. Sono andato, dopo varie ricerche, a colpo sicuro su questo tipo di portachiavi qua e fortunatamente non me ne pento. Allora, la ricerca della vostra combinazione richiederà un po di tempo anche perché in confezione vengono fornite molte viti di varia lunghezza così come gli spessori che sono di vario tipo. Ma il risultato, perlomeno nel mio caso è ottimo sia a livello di praticità che a livello visivo (nonostante le chiavi stesse varino di spessore, dato che ho inserito due chiavi di porte blindate) quindi nel complesso è un ottimo prodotto. Unica nota negativa forse è il prezzo, nel mio caso 35 euro, forse sono un pó tanti, ma il prodotto è di qualità.
