I just bought this and it really seems to stretch the strings out because it's so wide. Will this ruin the strings?

I never put it in between my strings. I just set it between the edge of the hole and either of the E strings. It's a perfect fit and much easier.

will this work if the guitar if on a stand and not in the case?

Yes, I have my guitars hanging on the wall, and I use it and those. and then it will also work when you put the guitar in the case.

With this in the sound hole, can I make my guitar stand for space saving instead of lying it on the floor, of course, in its hard case? Thanks!

I have one in my Taylor Guitar now and don't see a problem. Two things: 1 - it's really just a sponge contained in a special case that hangs between the strings. So the only caution is to be careful to NOT over fill the sponge so it would drip out. But that caution is the same whether the guitar is standing up or laying down. 2 - I suggest having the guitar in the case while using this so it is more effective. Also, most manufactures recommend this so the fret-board also gains some moisture.Hope this answer helps. Let us know if you have other questions.

Is this supposed to come with a sponge included? I just got mine and there was no sponge in it.

Yes there was a sponge included with mine. It is probably simple to cut one that would fit - .its kind of thin though. But why should you have to do that. They owe you a sponge. Contact them . Once you get the sponge, the humidifier works pretty well, but you have to check it - depending on how heated your apartment is - to make sure it hasn't dried out .

Amazing yet simple to use product!

Accessorio per corretta umidificazione chitarra

Semplice economico e di facile utilizzo, un ausilio in più per trattare bene la propria chitarra, specie se la si tiene in ambiente parecchio asciutto e secco. Per fare le cose fatte bene andrebbe misurata l'umidità nell'aria, nell'ambiente dove si tiene e si suona la chitarra. Qualora l'ambiente fosse già umido di suo, va tenuto in conto che un'eccessiva umidità (così come un eccessiva secchezza) nuoce al legno.
