It lasts a very long time and it is very good for its price

Good quality and packaging, but the pen buttons don't respond immediately. , I have to keep pressing them multiple times

First impressions of this graphics tablet were excellent: it arrives very smartly presented in a branded box inside which is the 36x21cm graphics tablet, USB connection cable, driver CD, stylus with 8 tips and a stylus rest and userguide which is written in English (and makes sense). Installation of the drivers proceeded smoothly on my Windows-10 PC and, following reboot the tablet was ready for use with minimal set-up required. I write local walks and cycle route leaflets which need hand-drawn maps supplemented with small, very simple sketches to illustrate rivers, areas of woodland, visitor attractions and other places of interest and, although I’ve tried drawing these with a mouse, I have failed miserably. I’ve also drawn the sketches by hand and then gone through the palava of either scanning my sketches or photographing them and importing them into the route leaflet document but it’s a long-winded method. Far better is to write the leaflet and draw the route at the same time and this is where this tablet fulfils its role. It can be used with desktop publishing, graphics and even MS Word software (I’m using Word 2003) so is highly versatile and involves nothing more than clicking on ‘insert...drawing’ or ‘insert....annotation’ then reach for the graphics stylus (or ‘pen’) and create your sketch on the tablet while watching it appear on the monitor. The tablet plugs into a USB port, the graphics stylus works wirelessly and there is no need to disconnect the mouse even though the stylus can now take over all functions of the mouse if you choose, simply by clicking on the its button on one side. As an additional feature, I find this especially good for photo-editing, particularly using the ‘cut-out’ facility in editing because it enables me to draw a smooth line around the subject to be ‘cut-out’, something I have never managed to do smoothly with a mouse. The Stylus is designed to feel like and function as a normal ‘pen’ so it is easy to add handwriting or hand-drawn sketches or other input to documents. Pressing hard on the stylus will produce a thicker, heavier line and a light touch will produce a lighter, thinner line. Adjustments can also be made via the XP-Pen software or the software package being used, eg MS Word has Ink Drawing and Ink Annotation pop-ups with line thickness adjustments, eraser, line style, line colour and different pen type options, eg highlighter, felt tip or ballpoint pen to create lines with a different appearance. Line style modifications can also be selected via the 4+4 express keys on the tablet itself. The tablet itself is made from rigid plastic with four non-slip feet on the reverse which keep it stable on the desk and, being large, it offers greater accuracy whereas any dithers on a line drawn on a small tablet, are exaggerated when viewed on a larger screen. The stylus feels just like a pen with a slightly springy tip which adjusts to varying pressures in handwriting, sketching or colouring-in. When not in use, the stylus rests on the included stand which also doubles as a handy storage container for the generous 8 spare tips which are included. Although being considerably easier to use and control than a mouse for graphics work or even handwriting, it does take some practice to develop the co-ordination skills to produce legible handwriting or usable sketches. One thing I found useful was to place a very thin sheet of 50gsm paper on the tablet and trace sketches from this as early co-ordination practice. This is a great graphics tablet for anyone who needs to add sketches, illustrations, hand-writing or any other similar input into documents. It works reliably and well, is well-made, feels robust and durable and is very responsive to the touch. I have another tablet costing more than 3 times the price of this. If I were to use them blindfolded, I wouldn’t be able to spot the difference in their results or usability – so this XP-Pen definitely offers excellent value for money. Technically it has nothing wrong, but at this stage in time it's no longer relevant. It's too laggy, unresponsive at times fails to recognize some lines, etc At the time this product came out, I'm sure it was amazing, right now, I would say it's obsolete when comparing. Nothing wrong with the product, it's just old (in the sense of production) and maybe would be more for children or someone learning how to draw. If you know how to draw or have good experience, don't buy this product or if you have more serious intentions, buy something more recent and the difference will be very much noticeable.

I bought this product to use with Photoshop; but having never used a graphics tablet before, I was a little apprehensive. Having read the customer reviews, I decided to give it a try anyway. I wasn't disappointed. It was delivered within 2 days, and came well presented in a nice box. As I am still trying to get used to using the tablet, instead of a mouse, and having never used an alternative product, I cannot compare it to others on ease of use or technical details. However, I find it a very well made quality product, and does what it is supposed to do. It is just the right size for my desk, not too big that it takes over the desk, and not too small that I struggle to do what I need to do, but just right as Goldilocks would say. I haven't quite got the hang of using the pen buttons, or the express keys on the tablet yet, but they so seem very useful and handy. My only negative so far, is that because I have to use it upside down due to the placement of my PC, and the cable, the express keys are now the wrong way round, despite using the left handed setting option. Although I do realise that I am able to reset the keys to my own custom settings, so it should not be an issue.

For the price, the XP-Pen Star 03 graphics tablet is good value for money. It's easy to use, sensitive and accurate enough for most of the applications it will be put to, and with both user configurable hard and soft programmable buttons, hard to beat. When it's working properly, the Star 03 is a very satisfying alternative to using a mouse. However, there’s a very negative caveat to the above, and that’s to do with the device driver supplied. To be specific, I’m referring to the Windows driver (I have no experience of the Mac driver). Although installation of the driver is straightforward enough, (I recommend you visit the XP-Pen website to download the latest version) it is not without problems. On my Windows 10, 64 bit operating system, the driver failed to initialise when the Star 03 was connected to my PC, so I couldn’t make use of the tablet without having to start the driver manually each and every time. (The driver is supposed to add a shortcut to the system tray on your Windows task bar for access to the tablet configuration.) I uninstalled the driver via Windows Control Panel, and then re-installed it and that’s where the problems began. The driver initialised when I plugged in the tablet, but every time I clicked the system tray icon to configure the tablet, Windows UAC popped up asking me to approve the execution of the driver. Worse, attempting to configure the tablet hardware buttons crashed the driver every time. I next attempted a clean un-install of the driver. The XP-Pen website has a driver removal tool (clearly they know there are problems) which did nothing to improve things. Following the instructions (not well written) did seem to remove the driver, but as soon as I re-installed I got conflicting messages. First, I was told the driver still existed and had to be removed, did I want to proceed? Answering yes to that, promptly re-installed the driver it was allegedly removing. This started a vicious cycle of install/un-uninstall taking me hours to unpick. After much wrangling, clearing out registry keys and deleting the program files manually, I finally managed to get a stable installation, could program/configure the graphics tablet and all is now well - with the exception that UAC still insists on popping up every time I click on the system tray icon. Annoying, but not the end of the world. Incidentally, the driver also has a set of features (the soft buttons I mentioned at the beginning) that are not even mentioned in the accompanying literature but are a welcome bonus increasing even further, the tablet fiunctionality. In summary, a great graphics tablet for the money, but let down badly by the accompanying driver software which is in desperate need of an overhaul. If you’re happy to deal with the potential driver issues when using this device, it’s a great piece of kit.
