Would the straight jaws locking pliers be good to pull out staples (for upholstery work)? Would I be able to grab the staples? Thanks!

If they are small staples probably not. Larger ones maybe. These are ok pliers but kinda coarse fit not really for precision work.

How wide do the 10 in grips open?

I haven't measured the opening, but they have always opened enough for all my tasks.
