The Explain Pain Handbook: Protectometer Review: Explain Pain and the Protectometer has produced hope for me - I bought this book after being introduced to the noi group by a physical therapist and after going to their website and watching a lot of the videos on YouTube by the authors. So I had learned the concepts and found the Explain Pain concepts a new and hope-producing way to approach a chronic and persistent pain problem. I respect that they teach the biology of pain first and then address their process in how to treat pain. I chose to purchase this book as it is geared toward the person with pain. So it does not give a lot of theory but really you can get that from their website and videos... This is a workbook and I have found it extremely useful. It gave me tools and a language to use when working with my pain and my medical professionals. This concept acknowledges that pain is real and teaches how to retrain your body and brain to address pain. They do NOT say it is all psychological but address the brain and neural system as part of our biology. Review: Pain is an appetite for protection - A paradigm shift in the conceptualization of pain. The brain includes a variety of information sources when weighing the safety and danger signals in the environment. This workbook helps you identify all the danger signals that contribute to feeling pain. Knowledge of pain neuroscience alone has a small but meaningfully positive effect on pain levels. This book guides you through a new understanding of pain that is based on the current research evidence with practical application to real life without weighing you down with too much science. As a physical therapist I work with people in pain on a daily basis, helping them understand what pain is and what it isn't has been crucial to helping some of my patients recover.

Pain is an appetite for protection

Yes, brain pain is a monster.
This book is good tool in the hands of anyone with chronic pain; and good gift to those who need a better understanding and compassion for those in chronic pain!

This book got me *running* after 3 years of barely being able to walk!
This book practically saved my life. I spent 2-3 years on crutches a week a month due to Central Sensitization (CS). The ideas in this book gave me the confidence I needed (...confidence is a critical component in treating CS) to start actually making gains and rebuilding strength, without inflammation. I combined this book's techniques with red light therapy and vitamin B injections, and within 3 months I had rebuilt a ton of strength with almost no inflammation events. And after another 8 months, I was RUNNING 13 minutes at 6.7 mph every other day. Just mindblowing, after spending 3 years on crutches and thinking I'd never run again. My gripe with the book is that it doesn't tell you where to go next. It doesn't even NAME the condition that is the theme of the book (Central Sensitization) so that you can go google it for more info -- which is a HUGE shortcoming IMO. Nor does it point you to "next steps". I suppose it assumes you're working with a professional at a chronic pain center, but I wasn't. If I would have just googled "Central Sensitization" earlier, I'm sure I would have cut an additional 4-6 months off my healing time. I'm super grateful this book got me into a healing trajectory, but with just literally a few more sentences or paragraphs, it probably would have got me there in 6 months instead of 12.

The chronic pain companion.
I have only just read this, and so am yet to use it. However, I see it as the extension of the valuable texts done by the Moseley team. Looks like it will be very useful for clients. Again, it seeks to see pain in a life context, emphasise awareness of the context in which the experience of chronic pain exists, and seeks to empower the client's ability to cope themselves. I look forward to using this.

This is valuable for people with chronic pain that limits their lives.
There is useful and valuable material here -- but you need to look on it as a workbook. In my case, my pain interferes with sleep, and this book is not particularly helpful for that.

If you have pain, you need this book.
I have chronic pain. This book framed pain in such a way that not only did it help me understand it better, but also gave me a way to actually help decrease my pain. A must read if you or a loved one has any kind of pain.

As a chronic pain sufferer for nearly 10 years know, retired from the workforce and once spiraling downwards quite rapidly this book has really helped. There are no magic solutions and a combination of health services is likely the best way forward but this book helps you to understand what your mind (pain receptors) are telling you and how to manage these signals in a way that is less destructive. It has been better than any advice i have received from a multitude of medical professionals and a worthy investment for chronic pain sufferers. Good Luck peeps - you are not alone.

Encourages you to engage with your chronic pain and become more mindful and aware of it (whether you want to be or not) in the hope that you will then have the strength of mind to manage it better. This depends on the level of your personal pain and the strength of your mind. The book itself is brilliant, also good for lifestyle coaching, stress awareness and management, health and well being in general. The best book I've ever found on such a harrowing, subjective, complex subject as pain and perhaps the best i've ever found on general health also

This book is a game changer. It seems like a lot of money, but if you are suffering with chronic back pain, it's worth it. No easy fix of course, will require work but it makes so much sense. It's like it's been written for my experience!
