Presents an unabridged selection from the story about a seemingly ordinary village that participates in a yearly lottery to determine a sacrificial victim. Review: Great short story - Sometimes you just want the book. This short story has stuck with me for the past 18 years since I first read it. I was trying to tell my 19 year old about it and the impact behind it and decided to buy her the book. She too FELT the story and how it relates to the fears of what society can become. Great read! Review: Quick read, worth it - Super short, originally written in 1948. Classic suspense story-telling leading to a pretty shocking ending that could very well have served as inspiration to many of our more recent dystopian novels and movies.

Somewhat Disappointed
I reviewed the story summary before making my purchase. When I received the book with only a few pages I was initially surprised. When I read the few pages I was disappointed. That is not to write that the story idea was very interesting. Thus the reason for 4 stars.

Poor kindle edition---amazing writing, don't get me wrong
I ordered this kindle version because the universe told me it was time to read The Lottery and other amazing short stories written by Shirley Jackson. It's a wonderful book; however, this kindle edition has some issues. Firstly, all of the text is underlined. Not sure why, but I can't make it disappear. Additionally, there isn't a table of contents to find specific stories, so I'm just reading from start to finish. That's my only complaint, and it seems like these issues should be addressed! Thanks for addressing them, Amazon!

The Lottery
I read this one back in high school and really enjoyed the story. As an adult I still enjoy it. What does that say about me???? LOL. The Lottery is the classic short story and Shirley Jackson has influenced so many authors today. Not popular at the time it was written, The Lottery shows the mob mentality and how ‘tradition’ keeps going despite not knowing where it started and why it continues. This short story moves at a quick pace and there are signs showing what is to come, but until you reach the end you don’t see it for what it is. This is one lottery you don’t want to win! I also realize that I need to read more by Shirley Jackson!

The story is classic, the price is sure to go out of style
I bought this book after watching an episode of SourceFed. They compared it to many other great books that I enjoy, so I felt that I must read this one too. The story itself is really great. It is a thought-provoking classic. This book in particular is meant to be used by middle or high school students. It seemed to me to be very good at guiding its reader, if that was what you were looking for. However, at almost 4 dollars, the 20 pages of story are not worth it. I would try to get a collection of Jackson's work from the library or buy a collection of her works Amazon for around 10 dollars. You'll get a lot more story for your buck!

Very odd
A collection of very odd short stories. You do wonder at times what the author is trying to convey.

Not what I expected…
I saw on one of my internet feeds that this short story was ranked as the best. I had never heard of it, and I’m fairly well read. So I ordered it. It’s a quick read but thought provoking. Give it a try.

Shocking but nice
This short story is simply amazing. It shows how threateting the traditions can be. The edition is very thin, 11 pages, but the quality in paper and print is what I expected from Penguin, quite good. I highly recommend this short story, it's creepy but at the same time has a tremendous critical background. Definitively, I'll buy more books from this author.

Lottery read!
This book is small in size but the fonts are very much precise. The book is full of creepy and chilling vibes. Shirley Jackson is my current anticipated read and I know I will enjoy reading it. The book was in a great condition btw!
