Not your average language for a tour book
I like speaking the language if traveling where English is not spoken. Up until now, that was easy with the French and Spanish I learned in high school and college. However, now I need to know some Italian.Such-and-such-a-language in x-number-of-days-type books are fairly useless for me. Certainly, once you have studied the language, you can look over these phrases to cover something important. Grammar is all important. To gain the most advantage, I learn the structure, including the grammatical structure of major nouns, as a first step. Then, I start to build vocabulary. So, I was very happy with the Practice Makes Perfect series.I bought the grammar and the vocabulary books. I must say, I like having these two subjects in separate books. Once your eye and your brain acclimate to a structure within a book, you learn faster if the structure is standardized throughout. Since grammar and vocabulary require different structural teaching methods, it is a big help. So, for me, the vocabulary book should be bought with the grammar book, unless you have a good command of Italian grammar and just want to add more vocabulary. This is the type of book that you can take on the train and just pick up new vocabulary, little by little. Words are grouped by classification, and I would consider the book somewhat advanced (like at least a high school level 3 class). My daughter laughed when she saw that the Italian vocabulary book's starting vocabulary lessons included "soap opera-ish" terms along with family terms. In other books about language, you tend to get the primary grades terms first: bird, box, red, car, etc. In the Italian vocabulary book, you get "mother-in-law", "divorce", etc. etc., right from the beginning. I would agree that these books are best for people who have taken a first year of any language in high school. There is not a lot of wordy explanation in these books, but a clean, quick study.

A Great Pimsleur Audio Companion
I have found this book a great learning companion for my Pimsleur audio program in Italian. The reader needs some understanding of Italian to use this book. As such it is not an entry point to learning Italian. As a supplement to a program in Italian it is great. Orrganized around topics like “the family,” which provides Italian words for family members such as wife, husband, cousin, etc.; and related words like affection, love, etc., which describe these family relationship words, it has helped me to expand my Italian vocabulary. More importantly, this organization has helped me to retain this vocabulary. It is a very good book for this purpose, which is a challenging one for me.

Are there errors in the answer key?
Pronouns in Italian go far beyond simply memorizing words and phrases -- this is where I feel I have to begin to "think" in Italian. This book is a great way to supplement the "Living Language" course I'm using.Does anyone know if the following are errors, in the Unit 4 answer key? 4-2.4, 4-2.5 and 4-8.1: should these be "la" instead of "lo"? And should 4-7.5 be "sta" instead of "sto"?

I purchased this book because like many of the other reviewers
I purchased this book because like many of the other reviewers, I was confounded by the Italian pronoun usage and placement. After studying intensely and working all the exercises a couple times through, my Italian comprehension exploded. Finally, I am able to instantly understand what I read and most importantly what I hear in Italian. The secret was to understand the pronouns and how and when they are used committed to memory. Now it all makes sense and the beautiful, melodic sound of Italian flows. If you are serious about learning the Italian language, this is a "must have" book.

Loving it!
This is a very useful book for learning Italian! I'm into the Intermediate phase of learning Italian (more than 1 year, less than 2) and have this lovely book as a GREAT resource tool. I use it often, and it'sextremely helpful because of all the quizzes, the easy to understand explanations as to why certain pronouns are used and others not, plus there are plenty of useful charts and other displays that really help the serious learner to overcome their fear of the language!! The book makes it fun and straightforward, and a wonderful supplement to my classes once a week.

Good vocabulary builder
All of the Italian "Practice Makes Perfect" books are wonderful as supplements to your learning the Italian language. This book is effective for vocabulary building within topics. So if you want travel vocabulary, there is a chapter on just that. If you want vocabulary for the things you see and do at school, in the doctor's office, etc., you will find chapters that compliment your development of vocabulary in those areas.

Important resource of learning
It’s an important resource for learning Italian. Learning a language needs more than a book of grammar and a list of important words .
