I paint in oils and bought this set of painting knives, because it has a really good number of different sizes and shapes and I need these for impasto work, highlights and work where it is important to preserve that special quality of artist oil paints, of holding the shape of the stroke on the canvas. The butter-like texture of artists tube oil paints needs knives that are simultaneously flexible in a soft kind of way, but have good, lively spring too. The blades also need to be fine, thin enough but sturdy. This set of painting knives delivers effortlessly on all most important characteristics as noted just above. All blades are stainless high quality tempered steel, great spring, great flexibility, enabling easily the handling of buttery oil paints, with accuracy, delicacy and their offset position relatively to the wooden handles, makes them very easy to use, whether your oil painting artwork is standing vertically on an easel, or horizontally on a workbench. The blades go up to a very sturdy rod which is firmly set into the wooden handle. Wooden handles are a good size and shape, although I found the finish was not as smooth as I would prefer, but I resolved this easily, by giving the handles an extra 3 coats of Polyvine Wax Water based varnish, followed by a rub with a very fine scotch brite pad. This has made the handles even better, very smooth to the touch. This, however is not a fault, it is simply my own preference, I must stress this. Don't be put off, the knives are EXCELLENT!!! The set includes a number of different blade sizes, from fairly large to a tiny blade about 10mm or 15mm in length and just 5mm width or so, thus enabling a huge variety of painting strokes on canvas. The larger rectangular blade is big enough and sturdy enough to mix colours on the palette. Be it a delicate small highlight, or an entire portrait done in broken colour and paint knives, you have here a set that offers the widest versatility range available. So do I recommend them?!... Absolutely! For a quality level this high and a price this competitive, get your good self a set of these and paint away. You will be perfectly happy with them.
