One piece has a scrubbing side for removing algae inside of the aquarium, while the other part magnetically attaches from the outside. Each algae cleaning magnet comes with one pad for glass aquariums and one pad for acrylic aquariums. The inside scrubber magnet is bottom-weighted that will fall straight down if separated. Cleans the glass well and, so far, it hasn't become detached from the outside magnet. It's quite hard work though! The only problem, which is minor, is that the inside magnet tends to vibrate or oscillate as it travels, unless you move extremely slowly. This sets up small pressure waves through the water, enough to make the heater elements wobble when you're in the vicinity, and it freaks the fish out a bit, but only while it's going on. I can’t find them** A: I am sorry to tell you. but you will find them hard to get as we discontinued the replacement pads in the past six months (timing varied by the pad). The rationale was very few people ever replaced the pads which caused retailers to stop carrying them which of course led to us discontinuing when we ran out. **Q: Does this work okay with a bowfront tank? I don't know if the curve of the glass would throw the magnet off or another detriment I am not foreseeing** A: I am using a small magnet on a 70 gallon glass bow front. I didn't think it would work, but after a little while the pad adjusted to the curve. Use short strokes and it works great! **Q: Replacement pad?** A: You have to check with amazon or just by a new one **Q: The instructions mentions a black cleaning pad for glass, but my package only came with the blue one? Looked around and this seemed to be the best product for its price. Good size and powerful magnet(watch your fingers). Used it on a 120G tank with 1/3" glass and worked great! Glass pad was needed as the blue acrylic pad was too soft. Takes a few swipes to clear thicker algae but not at all a hassle. Very easy to turn corners and switch sides.
