FoxFarm Ocean Forest Potting Soil, 1.5cu ft - Light, Aerated Texture, Designed for All Container Plants

I’ve been using this soil for a while now, and I’m really impressed with the quality. The texture is perfect, it drains well, and my plants started growing healthier and greener within a short time. It’s rich, fresh, and easy to work with. Definitely one of the best soils I’ve tried, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves gardening.

Great soil

I've been using this soil for years and has always been good. It's nutrient packed so you really don't need fertilizer for 45-60 days.

The soil is wonderful and gives consistent results; seedlings love it especially. Already has perlite material in it, but when mixed with additional perlite, gives perfect water retention without root rot. One confusing thing is that there is a 12 qt version. 1.5 cu ft is about 45 qts, so 12 qts is less than 0.5 cu ft - enough for one 3 gallon bag.

This is a very good, quick draining medium. 4 stars for the price, because it's darn expensive for some soil. My plants enjoyed their medium in their 5 gallon mesh fabric pots. They grew big and strong. However, I suspect that this soil might have contributed to a nutrient deficiency because I do not believe this soil has any nutrients in it (NPK). If I am wrong I apologize but I have never had the deficiencies I had when using this soil with my other plants. This could be resolved by the grower by adding Bone and Blood meal for added slow-release Nitrogen and Phosphorus, but I would expect that to be in soil that is this expensive. One of my plants never recovered and yield was reduced as a result. Another recovered and continued to bloom well but it was smaller and stunted than the others. My other two enjoyed it no matter what. So it's hard to say if those were due to this soil or not, but I really ruled everything else out during the grow so I am convinced that it was this soil. My next generation of plants are in cheap, available-at-every-retailer soil, and I can safely say that they are doing FAR better than my earlier generation plants did that were in this expensive soil. However this soil does have excellent drainage properties and root rot was never a concern. Once again 4 starts for the price - too expensive for what it is.

This soil mix has been a godsend for my babies. With little amending (perlite and the such), it is suitable for most of mi plants. My plants have been greener and shooting out new growth like crazy ever since repotting them in this medium. The earthy smell is heavenly. For those like me who don’t really have an idea about size (lol) be warned, this bag is huge!

I chose Fox Farm soil (anew choice), for repotting my Boston Fern and for a leggy Monstera houseplant. After reading the reviews, Fox Farm soil seemed to be a good choice for houseplants to grow in and for taking new starts from a plant, aka cuttings. Both my Fern and Monstera plants prefer slightly acidic soil and so I tested the new soil’s PH and it’s at 7.0. The PH level is another detail needed to consider for my new little plant fledglings (cuttings from the Monstera). Even so I still repotted Fern and will soon be repotting the Monstera plant and it’s cuttings that need a 5.5 - 6.5 PH. The Fern needs a 6.5 - 6.8 PH, so it was close enough to be repotted in the new soil. The Fern’s fronds, (leaves), were always dropping right in the soil area. Pine trees do that too if the soil isn’t acidic enough they will drop pine needle debris to cover the ground, around the base, to lower the PH where they are growing. So this time, my houseplants will have a good restart using an upgraded quality soil (Fox Farm) paired with more attention to their PH balance. I will still use the soil for my Monstera plant and cuttings after amending with aluminum sulfate to change the PH down to 5.5 - 6.5. The soil is all good and I enjoy the process in taking care of houseplants and choosing a quality houseplant soil. When repotting Fern, I noticed the soil was fluffy and had its own perlite and organic material in it. I added more perlite and tea from tea bags to the dirt. There were no signs of pest. It watered well and drained well. I’m looking forward to seeing new fronds this spring from our Fern houseplant.
