How large are the mounting holes?

The 2 mounting holes are .34" ON 3.88" Centers.

Looking for photos of these mounted on an atv. any additional insight for a younger rider, please include.

I bought these for that exact reason! However, I went a different route. If your budget allows try the "foot rests" that bolt to the floor board and run up to the rear cargo rack. they flip down and are height adjustable for kids and adults. I ordered these and when they arrived I was concerned that they would be used as climbing steps to get on the ATV and eventually tear the fenders up... just a thought.

Does the rest stay up when in the stowed position? Wondering if you could ride a ATV hard without having them come down during the ride.

It shouldn't come down. The "spring" inside is pretty strong and the step is not that heavy to open with the ATV vibrations. (I'm an ATVer myself) However a branch or something may clip on it and open it.... very improvable thought. Just my two cents.

This looks like it need room behind for the step to pivot, is this true or can I mount this to a solid surface?

Solid surface mount will be fine. This is the greatest item at the most reasonable price— super heavy duty and can mount to any sturdy, solid surface. I used the two I bought as toe steps for my kid to climb up in my tall captains bed. I plan to buy 4 more to mount to hallway wall to use to climb into attic and my husband and I have these on our list as entry method to attach to tree when treehouse is complete. Highly recommend!
