Would it be helpful to install a gate spring along with this gate closer so it doesn't open much more than 90 degrees?

It can't open more than about 80 degrees. If the gate can swing easily you should install a stopper of some sort.

Are they corrosion proof/ resistant? We live near the sea.

I would think that you would want to spend a little extra for stainless since you live by the sea.

i have a metal residential gate 7ft high and 42" wide and currently have a spring closer but i still need it to latch close all the time ,

I have a very traditional gate latch (bar with a capture latch) on my gate. It does not take much effort to latch - much like closing the front door of a house or modern car. This closer has adjustments to better control how much force is allowed/needed to close the gate. The way I have it set up, the closer releases the weight of the gate about 5" from the latch. This is enough to get a firm close but not too much to rattle the gate.
