Does this work like an exacto knife?

Cross a box cutter and an Exacto knife and this would be the result. It's probably not as good as either for their intended job, but they are a decent substitute. The blade isn't as stiff as an Exacto knife blade, so isn't as durable, but it is at least as sharp. I love them and carry them instead of a jackknife.

How to take out the back to snap? off blade

I use a pair of plyers and the end of the blade snaps off and the sharp next blade is ready to use. Each knife has a lot of blades to snap off.

Does the black thumb button separate slightly to lock in place ?

It doesn't really separate but it locks in place as you slide it up and down.

Would these be strong enough to constantly cut open zip ties?

I would not trust anything like this product to be safe for that use. Not saying these are poor quality, they are great for box cutting and the like. It takes alot of force to cut a zip tie, I use a wire cutter, much safer.
