Do I need to buy special ink, or can I just print directly from my ink-jet printer onto this transfer paper?

Give it a try. Won't hurt, maybe it could work, side note. I think if you want to print directly on it, for sure UV ink, pigmented ink or possibly plastisol ink would definitely work

What if the dark colors in the picture start turning white?

This happens for two reasons, 1. There moisture in the paper. Turn the blank face down, cover with non stick wax free parchment and press at 400⁰ F for 20 seconds, medium pressure. 2. Your pressure is too light. When pressing you need medium to heavy pressure for 40-45 sec. 400⁰ F. Be sure to center the substrate in the middle of the press so there is even pressure all around.
