Installed in a 1998 Mitsubishi Montero with an almost 10-year-old Pioneer deck. No amplifier. No sub. This is my first set of car audio components and I am thoroughly impressed. If you're in a similar boat, I hope this review gives you the confidence to make the jump on these. They are remarkably good. Just be prepared to do a little fab to get them in. My truck originally came with a 300-Watt, 8-speaker Infinity sound system. When I bought it in 2015, the factory amp and CD changer had long since been removed, and all the original speakers were blown to smithereens. Tight on budget and time, I had a local shop my Pioneer deck and a set of relatively matched Infinity Reference speakers, 6.5s in the lower front doors and 6x9s in the rear. This system was decent, if not particularly powerful. With a 3-point fader bias to the rear, I could turn the volume up to 28-32-ish before I'd get distortion and start worrying about blowing speakers. I could barely compete with road noise on the highway. All that said, I had it dialed in and loved how it sounded. Even though my Montero originally came with a 3-way component set in the front, I still had to do some fabrication to install these speakers. I had to cut the baskets out of the factory door mounts and space them off the door by 1/4" or so to keep the magnets off the window glass when rolled down. I had to custom fabricate brackets to mount the 3.5" mids in the lower dash (because the factory speakers had integrated brackets that couldn't be separated from the speakers). And I had to cut the grilles on my factory tweeter pods to accept the new tweets. Being happy with what I had prior, I was extra cautious in choosing these. I wasn't planning on replacing all my speakers, but I had to replace the heater core (which involves removing the entire dashboard and most of the interior), and my mother-in-law randomly asked me if I could use the set of J: Audio 6x9s she ordered by mistake last summer. Having already spent my entire budget on sound insulation (Noico & Siless, effectively identical, imo) and other interior bits, I doubted I would find a set of 3-way components for any price I could justify, but these CT Sound Mesos caught my eye. I feel like they're half to a third of what you'd pay for a more well-known brand like Infinity, JL, or Focal, so it's definitely a leap of faith purchase. Before, I had the following settings on the deck: > loudness: max (3/3), bass boost: max (3/3), fade: 3-to-the-rear - max volume: 32 After, I have the following settings on the deck: > loudness: min (1/3), bass boost: min (1/3), zero fade - max volume: 45 I now enjoy a crystal clear front stage, can turn things up loud enough to completely drown out highway noise (and shake all the mirrors without a subwoofer). There is no clipping or distortion, and I know there's still some fine tuning to go before I get things to the sweet spot. So far, though, I can crank any type of music I like--rap, rock, techno, funk, mariachi, classical, etc.--and it all sounds amazing. Definitely worth the investment. Just be prepared to do a little customization. I found the following really made a difference: - a "Dremel" rotary tool for cutting/trimming/sanding speaker brackets/buckets - a box of Noico 80mil butyl rubber sound insulation to isolate speakers & seal panels It's worth the effort, imo.

I absolutely love these speakers! Hefty magnets on the woofers provide tight clean midbass. the low end is so good I will use them without a subwoofer for a while. Im really enjoying the sound from these speakers. Ive been doing car audio for over 30 years and every now and then a product really impresses me. This is one of those. I cant stop listening to them.
