The tools work as expected on metal roofing. **Q: will these cut a brass kick plate ?** A: If the brass plate is not too thick it will be able to cut it easily, otherwise it will leave a rough edge. **Q: Would this be a good tool to cut hardware cloth/wire mesh? It says it's serrated which makes me think it might not work as well? Recommendation?** A: My lefthand and righthand shears are not serrated. I don't know why sheet metal shears would be. I suspect you have gotten erroneous information. I can only offer my opinion about cutting hardware cloth with sheet metal shears. I wouldn't do it, simply because I value my excellent sheet metal shears more than using them for a job for which they are not intended. If you have a substantial amount of hardware cloth cutting, you might get lower quality sheet metal shears and just sacrifice them for that job. The Midwest shears would do it, but I think much cutting of heavy hardware cloth would nick the edges and dull them. If you have just a moderate amount of light to medium weight hardwar cloth to cut, you might use a set of diagonal cutters. That is what I would do. **Q: Would these work for shortening a U-shaped aluminum bar?** A: Not very well and only if the material was quite thin, not what I would describe as bar stock. If it were me I would use a fine toothed hack saw or in my case I have a Fein Multi-master with a fine toothed metal cutting blade. These will not work on a U shaped stock without cutting both the upright legs first and bending the bar at those cut points to about a 135 degree angle to get these in where the jaws were not obstructed by the uprights.
