I don't know if this would work to seal over a defective overflow drain on a tub. I used it to install a shower head and it worked well.

Can I use this to stop a leak in a spigot for a rain barrel?

The answer can be yes or no, depending on the application. This tape is designed to stop leaks AND provide prevent seized up threaded pipe joints, not to glue up/fill up holes or cracks in wood or plastic. As far as a spigot the spigot with have to have threads are at least 1/2" long on both the screw out spigot and on the barrel and would be best to be meatal or at a minimum wooden threads. If yours meets those criterion, answer back and I will tell you which direction to wrap the Teflon tape on the threads.
