Does it require a password to start recording? This could be problematic in stressful situations, if so.

If you get the firmware upgrade you can eliminate/disable the password function - which may not be a problem for personal use, but was put in place to prevent accidental or deliberate erasure of evidence. You can set it to start recording when turned on. From the manual: "ONE PRESS VIDEO RECORDING a). Press to start/stop recording b). Hold to power up camera and start video recording immediately when camera is powered off." So if the camera is off, and you press and hold the camera button, it will start it up and begin recording immediately. 5.9 One Button recording - When camera is powered off, HOLD Record button, camera will initiate and start video recording immediately. Alternately, you can set in the menu for it to respond to motion detection, so it kicks into recording anytime it senses motion in front of the lens. 5.7 Motion Detection In settings, please find Motion Detect option. So, the device records in 15:00 clips, but you don't have to press the record button every 15. The video playback software that comes with the device will assemble all of the 15:00 clips into a clip that is however long you continuously recorded, so for example, if I hit the button at the beginning of my 5 hour shift, and I hit it again at the end of my 5 hour shift to shut if off, I'm going to have 5 hours of video broken into 15:00 clips on the device itself, but if I connect the device to the software, it will assemble all of the clips into a 5 hour clip, which I can then save part or all of at my discretion.

Can you turn off audio recording

Yes you can. There is a mute button on the side that shuts off audio recording, just video. If you have the unit in pre record mode, you can hit record, hit the mute button, then stop recording. Now you are in pre record with no audio. If you hit record in this state, it will start recording the last 30 and future without audio, until you hit the mute button again.
