Ben hope is brilliant

Ich habe sie alle gelesen. Alle. Auf meinem SUB liegen die Bücher 17 und 18 und ich freue mich darauf. Mit Benedict Hope hat der Autor Scott Mariani eine Figur geschaffen, die mit seinen inneren Dämonen kämpft, dabei stur wie ein Esel ist und vor dem Einsatz lethaler Mittel nicht zurückschreckt. Als former Major der SAS weiß er, wie die Dinge in ihrer Endgültigkeit zu handhaben sind. Keine Kompromisse. Ben Hope stolpert über Probleme. So auch hier. Ein wertvolles Manuskript, ein toter Freund und viele viele Fragen, die einer Antwort bedürfen. Mit Hope zu spielen, ist keine gute Idee, aber für den Leser immer ein Vergnügen. Natürlich ist das keine Weltliteratur. Natürlich agiert Scott Mariani in seinem schriftstellerischen, eher einfach gehaltenen Rahmen und natürlich reagiert und agiert Hope nach den Gesetzen seiner erschaffenen Figur. Deswegen mag ich ihn. Er ist berechenbar. Man weiß genau, wer sich mit Ben Hope anlegt, wird am Ende vor seinen eigenen Stiefeln liegen. Period. Dazwischen ist viel Platz für Action, unverhofften Twists und Einblicke in sein angespanntes Verhältnis zu der femininen Hälfte der Bevölkerung, das sein emotionales privates Leben charakterisiert. Ein Desaster. Ich empfehle das Buch sehr gerne, so wie die ganze Ben Hope Reihe. Vielen Dank.

Disclosure up front: this, the 16th book in the Ben Hope series, was my first by Mariani. I had high hopes for the series, as I've caught up with all my favorite spy and thriller writers, and I needed a new series to sink my teeth into on long plane flights and stays in remote hotel rooms. I chose Bach Manuscript because of the title: I wanted to see what the author could do around the music theme (which, as it turns out, is very little as the manuscript is just a ploy to drive the story). The author writes well, and is very readable, but I find the continual references to the next chapter and its outcome at the end of many chapters to be too much of a give-away as to what will happen. Also, the hero, Ben Hope, seems infalliable and can tackle anything and everything thrown at him (there's a difference between confidence and bravado, of course, but in an SAS veteran I would think prudence not arrogance would be the desired trait). There's a nice romantic tease in the book, which is a subplot that doesn't really push too far, and the overall story is a good read, but while I enjoyed the novel, I was left feeling a little unsatisfied. I've ordered a couple of other Mariani books in the series, so maybe my view will change, but for now I find this volume to be good but just not as good as it could have been.
