there is a bit of clear gel on top, do i need 2 mix these b4 use?

There was no “clear gel” but on a couple colors the paint was touching the foil lid when opened so I stirred them with my pallet knife. I didn’t see a noticeable separation in the texture, but I began giving each a shake before opening.

Doesn't it get dry without the lids?

They will dry if left out of the case overnight. When I am not using them I leave them in the case. I've had them for months and they are still moist.

Is there a way to replace colors which have run out?

I found the replacement pouches, just copy and paste this in the search box [ HIMI Gouache Refill Paints, 100ml, 6 US fl oz, Non Toxic Paint for Canvas and Paper, Art Supplies for Professionals, Students, and Kids(White) ] and there are other colours to choose from.

could this box of colors travel well? when the box is closed is it "spill"proof? or would it need to remain flat?

No it definitely needs to remain flat or the colors will run into each others' cups! The lid is just plastic with an inner rim of plastic so you can sort of lock in bottom portion of the case between those two "layers" of plastic on the lid. There is no rubber or anything to keep the paint from seeping between that zig zag of plastic so I would not deem it spill proof if you, say, wanted to carry it sideways in your backpack. I would love to see lids added as a feature since people are saying that the tops of the paints dry even if you scoop your paint out and close the case right away, but the tops drying isnt a dealbreaker since you can rewet the gouache. That plus it's kind of heavy considering you get 18 30ml tubs of paint!!
