Baader Planetarium U-Filter 2" (Venus, Ultraviolet, ZWL 350nm)

This is the only filter that works for ultraviolet photography. Other ultraviolet filters let so much infrared through that it is very difficult to see sunscreen, and plants look white due to so much infrared coming through. If you want the plants to look black (as they really are in the ultraviolet), you need this filter. Unfortunately, this was made to fit on a telescope and the threads do not match those on any camera lens or on the adapter ring sets used to adapt one camera filter size to another. You will have to make some sort of custom adapter or tape it to the front of the lens.

Very selective UV filter is great for Imaging with full spectrum cameras. The transmittance is lower than I would like though.

Excellent quality, quite expensive but really worth it. No contamination from IR light or visible spectrum, great image quality. Would'nt hesitate to buy it again in case I needed to. Great case for storing the filter, keeps it safe. I found this was the best option for capturing images in ultra-violet spectrum.

I recently bought a Sony NEX-6 which I converted to wide-spectrum by removing the hot mirror filter. I've shot IR landscapes for many years on a Canon with an 850nm filter permanently installed and wanted to experiment with UV photography. This isn't my first attempt at shooting UV - I've tried various filter combinations recommended by UV-photography blogs but never had great results. low transmission and IR leakage seem to be big problems, even when using IR filters. This is the first filter I've tried which actually produces the results I wanted. It's designed for attaching to a telescope but excels in this alternate role. The lens is also important - most modern lenses filter out UV, so unless you're going to spend a fortune on a dedicated UV (quartz) lens, older, manual lenses provide the best results. The filter comes with a 48mm thread - most of my lenses and all my other filters are 52mm so I've fitted step-up and step-down rings to make it compatible. It's also worth noting that as supplied, the filter glass is installed in its carrier the wrong way (pink side out). Baader do supply a camera adapter kit which, I imagine reverses the thread gender. However, I simply unscrewed the locking ring, VERY CAREFULLY inverted the glass and replaced the locking ring. All in all, not a cheap filter, but a good investment given the result I'm getting..
