My plants are thriving!!
I lived next to a dairy farm as a child, then on abandoned farmland through my teen years. I've always gardened and had a compost pile. I can say enough decent things about Coast of Maine Tomato and Vegetable Compost Blend Potting Soil. This is fabulous soil for vegetables. Seriously excellent. It hold moisture well, yet drains well and is high in nutrients, as the growth on my plants has been visible and amazing. I can see my plants start to grow within days of being transferred to pots containing Coast of Maine. It is lightweight compared to other potting soil mixes, too. I had a fairly easy time dragging the bags around to the backyard. I just ordered two more bags... although I've tried a couple other soils, to be honest. This soil seems best with certain vegetables, like some heirloom tomatoes that need soil that drains better, yet it still has all the necessary nutrients to produce high yeilds. This is real farm soil from farmlands. And it seems like it has enough cedar or other organic aromatic wood material in it to keep unwanted insects from munching on my veggies. Wonderful!!

Good and bad
Got this soil for the first time for heirloom tomato seeds I had. A few months later and they are doing great, indoors! Yes, the soil must have had gnats in it- I should have disinfected it. But I caught it early and used organic Neem oil I mix from a concentrate (higher concentrate for insects) and spray it all over the surface once a week right after watering. It’s been working great. I still see an occasional gnat, but hardly any. I’m about to order two more bags of this soil and will make sure to desinfect before using it. Highly recommend!

GNATS
My complaint is not with the function of the soil, my seeds have been growing fantastic! The problem is that I have never had fungus gnats until I purchased this soil. Sure enough now my apartment is infested with them. I always start my vegetable seeds indoors and I wasn’t sure if this bag of soil was the culprit until I opened it up and saw the army of gnats living in there as well. I’m not sure if this is a common issue or just a fluke. Just be warned I had a good 2-3 weeks of peace before they decided to take over my home and I realized this soil was the source. I gave a 3 star rating because everything is still growing wonderfully and fungus gnats don’t kill your plants, they’re just a huge nuisance.
