Edifier T5 Powered Subwoofer - 8 Inch Driver - 70 Watt (Black)

As other reviewers have stressed, it is important to spend the time and attention adjusting the low pass filter (the frequency response level [crossover point] at which the subwoofer cuts in with the 16' sounds) and the volume. As generally directed, it is sensible to set the bass on your amplifier to a neutral (0) level, i.e. no + or - adjustment to bass, as a starting point for calibrating the subwoofer, so that it works properly with the full available range. The cables supplied might work with other people's installed system/amp., but in my case I had to buy a separate 1 RCA male to 2 RCA male cable to make it work properly. The 3.5 mm [vs. an RCA] to 2 RCA male cable supplied was not usable in my case as there is no suitable 3.5 mm socket on my amp., which does, on the other hand, have a dedicated subwoofer OUT socket, to which my new cable is correctly connected, and working well. The other (2 RCA to 2 RCA) cable supplied with the unit generated feedback and distortion, although it sort of worked on some types music, but definitely not on others - and I was almost thinking of returning the unit altogether, if the replacement cable I obtained had not worked, but it does, and perfectly so. Phase control is set at 0 ('normal'), unless you have a long cable and the subwoofer produces sound other than from the same plane as your main speakers. Now that it has the right cable, and despite having been initially a little concerned about it with the 2 x 2 RCA plug cable, the system is working very well, and the gradual, proportionate response is very controllable, with a natural take-over of the lower bass registers from the main speakers, and the speaker and system as a whole is entirely free of background hum or noise. People who do not like music as much as I do have also commented that the effect is quite subtle, and can also be impressively powerful. There are of course very detailed (11+ point...) subwoofer set-up instructions available online, but so long as one starts with everything set as above, and on low/zero levels and works up, a very good set of levels can be arrived at. I recommend also using feel - i.e. the levels at which your hand feels the subwoofer starts to vibrate - it is (pleasingly) a very fine tuning to set this point, and then just above that, for the required 16' bass effect. As an analogy, anyone who plays an orchestral double bass, when doubling the cellos will know that it is a very subtle volume and level of precision that "tracks" the bass line an octave below, which is the most rewarding sound (the feeling of 'latent power') - simply enabling the octave to resonate almost with a life of its own, even at the softest levels, and which is a very wonderful thing. It is also very possible to achieve a good level of (non-boomy) precision in the bass notes with this unit, as well as the different sound textures (i.e. the difference between a baroque string bass, tuba/bass trombone, synth bass, and bass guitar, for example.) One can of course turn up the bass volume on the subwoofer for specific pieces of music, as required....! The music on which I want to hear more bass, is basically everything, ranging from rock and prog, to classical, big orchestral sounds, organ music, and electronic music. And so far, I am pleased to say that this subwoofer can handle all of it. It is also important of course to test and adjust your system using a selection of music that actually does have a range and variety of proper recorded 16' sounds, and to start from very low volume and pass filter settings, and work up to the level that sounds right for you. (Generally: "less is definitely more"...!) I have the volume on 1/4 of the max., and the pass filter (crossover) is set 1/2 way between 30 Hz and the max 160 Hz on the control knob dial (although the spec. suggests the range is 38-200 Hz.) but these settings adjustments will of course vary for everyone's different equipment, set-up, and personal tastes. The sleep mode mentioned by some is not an issue for me as I would simply switch the subwoofer off when not in use... In any case the sleep mode seems to work/wake up completely correctly. There is a sense of having a 'powerful, slumbering beast' that always has comfortably much more capacity in reserve than is being used, and could cope very easily with any levels of bass sounds one might wish to throw at it, and more.... if required. In general, I would recommend the acquisition of a subwoofer, as a very cost-effective way of getting more out of an existing sound system, without massive, expensive upgrades of amplifier and speakers. The unit actually measures approx. 25 cm (width) x 35.5 cm (depth, including space for the jacks and vol. / pass filter control knobs) x 28.5 cm (height) which is not as stated - I think the dimensions given online are the packaged size. It initially looked a little bigger than I expected when I picked up the box in which it was shipped, but it tucks away in a corner, effectively just about a square foot box, without taking up too much space, and the understated black design is very unobtrusive. RE: auto standby, after a month or so, I also take the point made by other reviewers. I had the unit once switch to standby [the standby timing is set at 20 mins, with no bass signal] with low recorded volume and a passage of music with little/no 16'. I agree, it would have been better to be able to turn that function on/off manually. However, I actually don't mind turning the subwoofer on again to get the 16' back under such (fairly rare) circumstances. It may also be a question of adjusting the crossover point, so that the unit does not miss out on receiving a signal.

*THIS CANNOT BE USED with AMPLIFIER *I bought this because my sony tv is a high spec with great inbuilt atmos speakers. And the bass they give off when playing atmos is already very good for a tv. I WANTED bass to have that punch when a explosion hit though. So I wanted just a bit more bass. I bought a sony ht-g700 and the bass was OK but the tv speakers where better SO I was stuck unless I paid for a whole bose 600 or sonos system £700 pounds area with bass modules. I found a video on utube that showed how I could hook a sub to my tv direct "and it worked". This edifer sub is great very deep bass for by needs and you can feel it and I have had no issue with auto sleep ,its heavy, simple to use But better than the two sony subs I had with soundbar bars. It is worth the money. I'm glad I found that video as I wanted bass but not a soundbar as the kd43x89ju sony had the best tv speakers I have heard. I now have perfect set up for a lot less than £700. Edit update unfortunately 😕 it went faulty and I had to return it ,shame as it seemed well built.

I bought this unit to match with Edifier R1850DB speakers as part of my PC sound. As the R1850s have a direct subwoofer line out it seemed a good idea to match them with the T5. Ok, let's start with the standard "you get what you pay for" so I didn't expect to get a fantastic sound at the price but at the same time I was looking for something a cut above the average. The T5 didn't disappoint. The T5 comes with all cabling which is of a decent enough length. The unit is made of wood so gives a solid bass with no resonating plastic sound. Front-facing 8" driver with removable grill cover - which i recommend leaving on if, like me, you locate it under a desk dangerously close to feet. Better to encounter grill than stick a toe through the cone. Set-up was as follows: computer to R1850DB via optical cable and then line out to T5. Matched T5 volume to that of the main speakers and then went to high crossover level to take the strain off the 4" R1850s and use the 8" T5 to produce the deep bass. Instantly heard the difference, the bass became more refined and less muddy plus there was an added punch which became more noticeable the more the volume was turned up. It does take a bit of tweaking to get the sound levels perfect but once you get there the computer controls take over. After 4 weeks of use I am very happy with the Edifier sound. I like to have a good deep bass but I also appreciate clarity. The T5 gives me both and so I am very happy with the sound I get. One niggle was that initially I wasn't sure if the T5 was producing bass. Firstly, it seemed to take a second or two before it woke up if I hadn't been generating any sound for a while. To be honest, if this is still happening I don't notice it any more. Secondly, if the sound is down low then I am not if I can hear the T5 or not. But, really, that is as it should be. If I turn it up just a bit then I get told to turn it down because the bass is travelling through the house and into the pillow that "she-who-must-be-obeyed" is resting on. I did get a few complaints when I was "breaking it in". Overall, for the price it is excellent, very good value for money and I especially recommend it for a 2:1 system of Edifier speakers. I am certainly sold on Edifiers and it will take a bit for me to move away from them. I dropped one star on the sound control as the volume control is at the back of the speaker and there is no remote such as there is with the desktop speakers. Considering that a sub-woofer typically resides under a desk, tucked away one really has to spend a bit of time getting the volume just right as soon as possible. The unit is heavy and not easy to move around whilst crouching under the desk.

When it comes to subs, two are better than one and at this price they are an absolute steal. 8 inch subs is about as small as you can go without compromise, 8 inch will not get the absolute depth of 10 inch and beyond but give you more bass slam, excellent for all types of music. It is difficult to set up subs, look on Youtube for guidance but simply turn them up until you hear them then turn down a little. There is also a 0 or 180 phase switch on the back, try this and which ever sounds louder keep that phase setting. Little adjustments make a big difference, and placement is important. It took me six hours to get it right in a garden den without the usual living room restrictions, but when it works they are amazing. These are superb value, the last time i bought a subwoofer was thirty years ago for £600 so these at around £130 each are remarkable value. I checked using AI how to configure these using a y splitter to create a mono signal, fine in theory. If your speaker is connected to your amp or main speaker sub output this is the right way to do it as ideally you want a mono signal and combining to left and right channel boosts the signal, but if you are feeding your main speakers from this sub then if you want multiple subs then run long stereo rca connectors through the subs first then to your speakers, this would apply to day the Edifier MR 5s for instance. This sub will not output a stereo signal if you feed it a y splitter mono signal despite what AI will tell you. If these are the front of your system, so you are connecting speakers to these then you will need a source linked either by twin rca connectors or by a bluetooth receiver as this sub does not have bluetooth connectivity.

A blooming good supplier. The first T5 arrived, plugged it all in, nothing, not a glimmer from it. Thought the RCA Y might be faulty so purchased another one for more money. Still nothing. Contacted Amazon to return it. First thing I have ever returned. As it was from a 3rd party seller they put me in touch with them. They contacted me shortly after they received my email explaining what I was connecting the Sub to. The original T5 arrived last weekend, it is now Friday and I am sitting here listening to Black Sabbath. Very happy shopper.. The T5 has paired nicely with my Denon. Another Black Friday purchase. Peter at Digitalis Direct is a good egg. Especially as we have similar musical tastes. 5 stars to them. The T5 needs to be run in, as do the Denon speakers. But right now I am happy with the whole package. The T5 is more than loud enough for the average UK living room with plenty of ohmph. I have already noticed that the sound is improving after 20 minutes of use. If you like bass and you are on a limited budget then this is definitely a good buy. Digitalis Direct are also the people who care with excellent after sales service. Hopefully you can hear the bass in the video. It was set very low.

Only had this a couple of weeks. I had a 5.0 system that was great with an old Sony center, Cambridge Audio SX50 L & R and Cambridge Audio S20 surrounds. The system was great but ultimately lacked low end and always had something missing. After I added this and EQd it using my Sony AVR (had to turn it way down by the way) my movies took on a new life. Now when the tree clearing machines in Avatar are doing their thing I can really hear and feel the low rumble, or a Star Destroyer is cruising past in Star Wars you really feel the massive size. It's a fairly subtle thing and it won't make the neighbours house shake, but I have an average size UK living room and it performs great, just make sure it is properly integrated in to whatever system you have and it won't disappoint. I also took it apart and suffed it with some sheeps wool (which I had laying around from food prep deliveries) to make it a bit tighter which seems to have improved the performance. Highly recommended for the price, I just hope it lasts

This little Edifier subwoofer really packs a punch. It's not too large and feels very well built. I have paired this with 2 wharfdale speakers rather than edifiers to use in my custom home cinema setup and it blends and pairs very nicely with them. As with all speakers placement is key. I found in some areas of my room it sounded better / louder than others but there is plenty of volume adjustment. Now I have had it for a little while I think it has actually got more powerful now the speakers have loosend up a bit which is worth noting as since it was new I have turned the level down a bit. I now have mine placed in a cupboard to keep the living room looking minimalistic and because it's size it fits nicely but still disperses the deep tones very well. Great priced subwoofer with all the power you need for a medium sized room.

Really easy to connect to my Edifer bookshelf speakers. Used for PC. Bass is good. Pump up the volume and it rocks the home office. Keep it low and it adds a nice rumble to events. To get the lost out of it you do need to pump up the volume but man, great for music and really good for gaming.

If you are looking for good subwoofer, I have one and I like it, so I bought one more. It so cool bass compere with the money amount. Most subwoofer are double price. This one hass low frequency control

Non sono un audiofilo ma per me è davvero ottimo. Ascoltavo musica dalla mia workstation con due casse amplificata di buona qualità, ma l'aggiunta di questo sub ha cambiato veramente tutto. La mia scheda audi è standard e non ha una uscita specifica per subwoofer. Ora mi è venuta voglia di acquistare anche una scheda più performante e sentire che cosa cambierà. Tenete conto che è piuttosto voluminoso e i cavi di collegamento non sono troppo lunghi.

Eu possuo um amplificador integrado Denon PMA-800ne, sem saída para subwoofer, porém, há saída Recorder que está atrelada a todas as entradas RCAs analógicas, então usei-a para conectar no Adifier T5. Saí da saída Recorder do PMA-800ne um cabo RCA e conecta-se no T5. Simples. O problema agora é o corte de frequência, já que o Subwoofer T5 vai até 160hz. Como minhas caixas começam em 60hz, fiz o cálculo (Entre 30hz e 160hz do T5) e coloquei no ponto 9 no potenciômetro que marca entre 30 e 160z, que corresponde entre 70 e 80hz. Desta forma preenche a queda dos graves na caixa de som. Eu usei o ChatGPT para me ajudar no cálculo e escolher o melhor ponto, passando os dados das caixas e subwoofer. O T5 é ótimo e fica melhor em músicas clássicas, que ficam mais encorpadas.
