It’s lunch time! What to do….what to do…🤷🏻♀️
I’ve been completely uninspired by the work place cafeteria. Stepping out to a restaurant or even calling for take out can start to add up quickly. I’d bring my own lunch from home but I’m not a huge fan of leftovers and I’ve never enjoyed sandwiches. You are probably saying right now “wow, she is a picky eater”! Well maybe just a little.😂 But when I saw this book say it was a healthy, quick and easy option… I knew I had to take a closer look. Is everyone familiar with bento boxes? It’s basically a boxed lunch designed for convenience. Originating in Japan it is now popular throughout Asia and now the world. It contains your main lunch component usually a protein (meat or fish for example). You can choose from a few sides and a staple of rice or any grain pasta that you enjoy. Overall it is a well proportioned balanced meal all conveniently packaged for those of us on the go! I’m in!🙋🏻♀️ I was a bit nervous to use a cookbook on my iPad instead of a physical copy. But the layout is brilliant. The pictures capture your eyes and your appetite immediately. The table of contents reminded me of a menu in a restaurant. I simply glanced through to what looked good and proceeded to that page of the book where I could find a recipe for each component of that particular bento box. I completely agree with the healthy part of what this book presents. All boxes are under 500 calories. But the quick and easy…not so much. All these these recipes are amazing though somewhat intricate and time consuming. I’ll definitely be giving a few more a try but only when I have the time necessary to devote to my meal preparations. Favorites to date: Mandarin chicken with sautéed chard and mushroom and tomato salad. Honey ginger beef with pickled onion and broccoli. Next up: Parmesan chicken with sautéed Brussels sprouts and sausage rigatoni.😋 Thank you to NetGalley and DK a division of Penguin Random House Publishing

GREAT for anyone, not just bento lovers!
I bought this cookbook from a local bookstore and wanted to review it here because I’m in LOVE! It’s definitely quick and easy and the well mix of Asian and Western recipes greatly comforts my Asian stomach while being able to adventure. Another great thing is that the book clearly marks the main dishes and the side dishes, so you can actually be flexible and make your own main/side dish combo. Don’t be rigid! My favs are the pesto cod parcel, sushi sandwich, and bacon tofu roll. What I usually do and also highly recommend is make bigger portions of your side dishes so you save more time when prepping, or you can say assembling, quick workday lunches. The author was thoughtfully in giving bento tips at the beginning of the book - it’ll come in handy after the pandemic when I’m actually using a bento box. I can't give a half star but overall I’d rate it a 4.5. The only thing I wish it has is some photos showing important cooking steps for certain dishes.

Absolutely great and easy recipes
The book is just AMAZING. I love the fact that each dish is complemented with a side dish recipe and mentions the nutrition per box as well. It is super easy to follow and so detailed that I love going through the recipe even if I have made it once or twice. My favorite is the Mapo Tofu with pickled cucumber and sweet Japanese Pumpkin. I wish the author comes up with more fusion recipes in her next book. I would be the first one to order.

Good meal plan, Poor recipes
This book is helpful if you need to meal plan and don't know where to start. However, the recipes themselves are lacking. It's almost like the recipes are watered-down, quick-and-easy versions of recipes. For example, the pickled vegetables recipe doesn't indicate to dissolve the sugar before putting it together. The pork belly recipe did not list star anise nor cinnamon as ingredients, tells you to sear the meat without mentioning adding fat/oil to the pan, and then only braises the meat for 15 minutes before ready to serve. This is akin to making an apple pie with dough, apples, and sugar only then baking for 10 minutes. Absolutely not the flavor nor texture desired. I've recently bought several recipe books and this one certainly helps me create a meal plan, the main dishes and sides go together very very well. But considering the quality of the recipes I always cross-check with something on the web to make sure it's made correctly.

Trae varios estilos de comida, no solo típica japonesa. Y por fin! Un libro de recetas que Si Trae fotos de cada receta de bento box. Recomendable para ideas. Me gustaría uno con comida coreana también.

The best book I’ve bought in years. Every bento box has a colour photo, as well as step by step instructions to each dish, so you swap the side dishes. I’d recommend this for everyone and never have a boring pack up again
