You should not microwave melamine. According to the FDA, melamine dishes are safe when used as directed, but the chemical is more likely to migrate when the products are heated in a microwave or conventional oven, particularly if they contain highly acidic foods (such as tomato sauce).

Does the top dish have holes in it to be used for shrimp on ice

No - it does not have holes in it for (i.e.) shrimp to drain when in it. i would not recommend it for serving shrimp. It is terrific for nuts however! We love ours for that very purpose. Linda Aiken
