Code in book for digital access does not work

The book seems all right but the touted "one year free digital access" simply does not work, nor do the instructions match the internet pages. Repeat error message was that the code is "out of date" so there may be more than functionality wrong. I cannot put access on my grandson's laptop thus the return.
