so I enjoyed reading it with her accent in my mind
I read this after watching the TV series, so I enjoyed reading it with her accent in my mind. It is long and spares little detail, but so very accessible and interesting, it is not at all turgid. I gained some useful insights, and grew in appreciation of ancient history, especially the characters and temperaments of Egypt.

A great narrative history
The most encyclopedic and up to date history of pre-Roman Egypt I have found. It tells the story of the country from its earliest beginnings to its seizure by Octavian with full regard to the latest scholarship and lays to rest many of the misconceptions and biases of the last two hundred years. It's also a great read.

Fantastic book unlike any other
Simply breathtaking and enchanting book which took me right into the chaotic, mysterious and rich culture that was ancient Egypt. As you would expect the most challenging aspect of this book are the names which were most of the time difficult to get right but the author is very consistent and makes the whole book such an easy and engaging read. Difficult to explain exactly how I felt after finishing it, a little sad as I understood so much of this history has already been forever lost. In short, highly recommend this book and the author is a true expert on the subject.

Very disappointed
A great book if you like lists of Kings and Queens, but that's all it is. I wanted more meat on the bones and was sadly disappointed by the lack of detail.

Quotes, quotes... are everywhere
I like her “overuse” of quotes. It’s like she gives a choice to reader to draw its own interpretation. On the beginning it’s very annoying but later on it all make sense.

The Story of Egypt
Having watched Joann Fletcher's programmes on Egypt and found them fascinating I just had to buy this book.
