How exactly do you set the tension release

The further back into the clip you set the line the greater the tension on the line.

How do you use the self locating snap?

one does clips on to your downrigger line the other one just open up put on the line very easy and great snap would recommened them

I am confused about how these work. Do you clip the grip release onto the down rigger line or the fishing line? Is there an image somewhere?

The metal clip is attached to the downrigger line or the downrigger weight (I prefer the weight option with weights that have tail fins to keep them from spinning) then the leader from the weight attaches to the black tension adjuster on the fat end of the clip. Your fishing line is then attached at the green clip end after you have let out your lure as far as you want it behind the boat. For most salmon and trout fishing, I go about 50' back to start and adjust from there.
