Martina Gedeck, star of the Academy Award-winning film the Lives of Others, brings a vivid intensity to this mysterious and riveting tale of survival set in a spectacularly beautiful Austrian mountain landscape. In a tour-de-force performance, Gedeck stars as an unnamed character who suddenly finds herself cut off from all human contact when an invisible, unyielding wall inexplicably surrounds the countryside where she is vacationing. Accompanied by her loyal dog Lynx, she becomes immersed in a world untouched by civilization and ruled by the laws of nature. As she grapples with her bizarre circumstances, she begins an inward journey of spiritual growth and transcendence. Based on Marlen Haushofer's eponymous classic novel, the Wall is a gorgeous, mesmerizing adventure film that raises profound questions about humanity, solitude, and our relationship to the natural world. Review: A Stunning Premise and An Evocative Film - The Wall is a remarkable movie coming out of Germany. The premise of the story is intriguing and a bit uncomfortable to contemplate, but...the transformation of the woman who has to deal with this unexplainable event is depthful and moving. One must listen closely to her narrative as she journals her experience because it contains gems of wisdom. This is not a sit on the couch and eat popcorn movie, but if you want to be moved and changed in some way, this is a masterful movie. Forget it if you classify yourself as ADHD... Review: The Wall - A superb film, flawless written, directed and acted. A deep and rewarding contemplation of human life and nature. Do see it.

Very slow, yet riveting in the last half hour.
Very, very slow. Artsy. Someone took a thinking story and put it to film. It's easier to read a thinking book than to turn it into film. It's solved with narration, and works quite well. I did end up enjoying the movie by the end, but it was tempting to fast forward through the earlier parts. The scenery was beautiful. The story was truly interesting. I related to much of the main character's approach to her predicament. I'm not sure all audiences will relate to her, however. If you like watching movies that leave you mulling things over for a few days, then this is a good movie for you.
