Mud [DVD + Digital]

Good movie. I enjoyed watching it again.

It's hard to adequately speak about this movie. I had my own preconceived notions from the trailers, which made me believe that this was essentially a vehicle to show off the acting ability of the main star of the film. I couldn't have been more wrong on any level. If anything, the main character of this film is Arkansas itself. Everyone else is just a story being told in it, all of which are interesting, and hold their own sense of importance. The two boys who are arguably the protagonists of the story are both very talented, and fit right in with their surroundings. The characters were both likable and relatable, but there was something more. Both of them really stood out for me. As for Matthew McConaughey, the trailer (at least to me) made me think that this whole thing was about him, and it just wasn't. I give him a lot of credit, because while there are certainly flashes of him in the character, he really kind of fell into that character, and accepted him for all of his flaws. This role actually required him to kind of step into the shadows, rather than be a main part of the story, and he works beautifully with it. I would argue that his character haunts the film, more than actually participating in it. It was a truly impressive performance, especially for someone who's commonly known as a lead actor. He's since done a good bit of character acting, and he's quite good at it, but this really stood out to me. I would highly, highly recommend this movie to anyone at all. The setting alone is worth it, and the story is a fantastic bonus.

So what’s the glory in living? Doesn’t anybody ever stay together anymore? If love never lasts forever, tell me What’s forever for? That’s a song from Billy Gilman’s debut album that kept coming to my mind after watching Mud. I’m coming to the conclusion that some of my favorite films to watch are dramas with complex character relationships. Something about the quest to understand the characters, as well as identifying with all the little emotions, make a well-done drama something I can watch over and over. Mud is among the best as far as an exploration of character relationships. The depth of Mud (McConaughey) and Ellis (Sheridan), the two leads, is incredibly written and superbly acted. Several of the themes among the other characters are relevant and pointed as well. Going back to that song, Mud is largely an exploration of people who fail in their relationships with one another. Looking at the story in the end, I suppose it’s not the happiest tale, but one of the most powerful ways to communicate a message, the same as the song, is negatively. Now, it can also be a challenging and dangerous way to tell a story. There’s a difficult line to walk when the viewer’s instinct is to justify the protagonist’s actions. And Mud has some difficult actions. Let me begin by saying I loved the character of Ellis. There are very few films that showcase the complexity of a kid like this, and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen one do better. The film connects us to him very quickly, and despite his faults, I was instantly sold on his story. He’s also the most solid guy in the film. Yes, he tells some lies and makes mistakes, but the film always gives us something to think about and in the end he’s the one I respect the most. The character of Mud is a little shadier, but again, we’re given so much to think about that the film’s emphasis is on trying to understand him rather than justify him, and eventually he makes the statement that “no, I’m not a good guy.” Though Mud may seem to be filled with cheap emotions and temporary relationships, I found it crying out so loudly that this isn’t the way it’s supposed to be. For me, it perfectly hit the narrow goal between connecting us to the characters and telling us, “don’t do this.” Matthew McConaughey is an amazing actor. He flawlessly performs the role of Mud, and few actors can pull off the trick of opening a character’s depth without much direct talk about their issues. Tye Sheridan is, after watching this, in my opinion, one of the very finest actors of his age in the industry. As flawlessly as McConaughey, he pulls off the complex role and his climactic low-point scene is so real that I’ll admit I had tears in my eyes. Though some of his upcoming films look to be pretty dark, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for his performance. However, very few films are perfect, and Mud has a few glitches along the way. There are a few rough spots in the script, mostly structural rather than the action. I just felt that a few things were out of place and/or happened too quickly. I also should mention the language. It’s frustrating when I like so much about a film, but it’s loaded with bad and crude language, especially when, in this case, a lot of it comes from kids (usually Ellis’s friend, Neckbone). Most of the time it’s lazy writing, and always it keeps me back from being able to recommend a film to a friend without reservations. For a thoughtful exploration of relationships and absolutely phenomenal performances from McConaughey and Sheridan, Mud is very close to perfect. Holding me back from a full five stars however, is the fact that the script could be paced a little better, and also ‘cause I’m tired of sloppy language where it isn’t needed.

Mud [Blu-ray + Digital ] The mood, the nature, the characters. Everything just oozes poetry about it. The yound kid is fantastic in this one, as he was in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life. Even Matthew McConaughey, who I am normally not a fan of, is great. A great story about love and coming of age. Masterfully directed by Jeff Nichols Picture quality: Aside from one or two minor bandings, I wasn't bothered by anything, and it was a sight to behold. The scenery is breathtakingly-gorgeous. Detail fantastic. Contrast nicely dialed in. Colours natural and warm. There are some mindblowingly sumptuous shots in this one. Audio Quality: Wonderful. Very immersive and rich. Great dynamic range and natural. Extras: There are plenty to be had, including a director's commentary. The making-ofs are interesting and informative. My highest recommendation. Film: 4,5+/5 PQ: 4,5/5 AQ: 4,5/5 Extras: 3,5/5

Mud is a beautiful film; thoughtfully written, artfully shot and expertly directed. At its essence, Mud is about a boy growing in to manhood, and coming to understand love in all its forms -- between friends, a parent to a child, a man for a woman, and that how one person knows love as one thing, another person knows it as another. Best friends Ellis and Neck find an abandoned boat in a tree left behind from the last flood, and will use it as their own secret base. They discover that their secret boat is not so secret, as a man has been living from it for a couple days -- the titular, Mud. The story follows the boys as Mud tells them how his circumstances led him to his current state: he is meeting his girlfriend, but he's in some trouble and will need some help to get back on his feet. Ellis, a believer of true love prevailing above all, that love is something you hold tight and fight for, decides to help Mud. Matthew McConaughey really is fantastic in this. The boys, Tye Sheridan (Ellis) and Jacob Lofland (Neckbone) are spectacular too! *** POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD *** Storytelling is at its finest, when you come to realize that Mud's increasingly complicated past (metaphorically) parallels Ellis's current life, and that is what is driving Ellis's desire to help Mud. Ellis is innocent, and his understanding of love is so pure, you almost want to believe in happy endings too. This movie is almost magic; set in the woods, surrounded by water, and whispered secrets by the bonfire. I wish I could articulate this better, but if it's not clear yet: I really like this movie.

Und warum wartet er ausgerechnet auf diesem Fleckchen Natur auf seine Freundin? Sehr merkwürdig. Aber und wirklich- Mud hört zu, hat ein offenes Ohr und ein Herz für die Probleme der Jungen. " Ich hab` sie gesehen,- soll ich sie `rüberbringen? " - " Nein- das schaff` ich auch allein. Bin auch allein hierher gekommen. " MUD- KEIN AUSWEG hält ein ganz gewisses Maß an Spannung stets aufrecht, ich wollte/ musste unbedingt wissen, wie dieser Film wohl endet. Schon von der fünften Minute an. Mud wird polizeilich gesucht- und nun will er das Boot aus dem Baum holen, wieder fit machen, um ab in Richtung Golf zu fliehen. Klingt utopisch? Nö. Und ist keinesfalls an den Haaren herbeigezogen. Nur soviel zum Film. Was dazwischen und danach und währenddessen passiert, verrate ich selbstverständlich nicht. " Ich besitze nur Zwei Dinge, die wertvoll sind..........- dieses Hemd hier,...und die Pistole. " MUD- KEIN AUSWEG: Und ich war so gespannt, manchmal sogar richtig angespannt. Und langweilig ist er einfach nicht. " Ihr solltet auf euch aufpassen. Mud steckt in einer Sache drin, mit der ihr nichts zu tun haben wollt. " MUD- KEIN AUSWEG: Der Film wird zunehmend interessanter, heftiger. Fesselte mich bald richtiggehend. Reese Witherspoon, die man leider nur am Rande sieht,- und Matthew McConaughey in einem dramatisch angehauchten Abenteuertrip. Es heißt, es gibt eine Stelle, wo der Mississippi sich öffnet und man meint, die ganze weite Welt von der Stelle aus zu sehen- das las ich mal wo. Und die wunderschönen Bilder in diesem anspruchsvollen Film machen das sogar glauben. Und es ist ein sehr atmosphärischer Film- mit Spannung, Herz und Hirn. Und gut dosierter Action. Und für ab und an ein Tränchen schäm(t)e ich mich so gar nicht. MUD- KEIN AUSWEG- wunderbar gespielt, insbesondere von den Jungdarstellern Tye Sheridan( Ellis ) und Jacob Lofland( Neckbone). Ein Film über Menschen, die am Fluß leben. Eine sensible Geschichte, die über den Reifeprozess zweier Vierzehnjähriger erzählt. Herzergreifend. Mit einem Verlauf, der dem Thrill- Titel des Films alle Ehre macht. " Wo sollen wir denn hin? Das ist Mud,....das ist typisch für ihn. " Für mich ein starker, großer Film. Me la compré porque me la recomendó un amigo de cuyo criterio me fíaba. Pero no las tenía todas conmigo. Que M.mc.C, solía ir de chulito guaperas... Pero aquí está fenomenal. Y no cuento más porque soy la única a la que le gusta que le destripen las películas, y los libros, y voy adelantando y volviendo a donde estuviera , para saber lo que va a ocurrir , en cuanto hay intriga, que si no me pueden los nerrrvioss y no disfruto. Pero, de verdad. Es una gozada. No sólo los actores, también el ambiente del río, la fotografía... No se la pierdan.

Excellent film à voir absolument, sur les gens qui vivent sur le Mississipi et en plus tres bon policier, visible par toute la famille. Une pépite.

Il campione vince ancora. Oltre tutte le ricette che si possono fare e merendine preparate, c'è MUD che è un capolavoro assoluto; guardare oltre l'ostacolo, come da bambini. Non per sporcarsi come fanno i grandi. Bel film, molto AMERICANO. N'cè nulla da fa', io sò americano de monno.
