A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, Eighth Edition: Chicago Style for Students and Researchers (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)

If you're a history student like myself, this will become your Bible from your first research paper until your dissertation. Seriously, you will be using this thing a lot. The main reason why students buy this book (besides course requirements) is to use it for the citation guide for notes-bibliography format which can get confusing. As a bonus, the manual includes tips and tricks on how to write an effective paper, though some sections can be a little sparse. The weakest part of the book is its section on writing style which is, sadly, lacking. Overall, this book is great to have on hand and is clearly aimed at students. It's written in a clear, easy-to-read manner that makes it accessible to anyone who cares enough to buy a style guide. I would suggest dog-earing the pages on sample citations if you want to figure out quickly how to write a citation without going through the full sections on each aspect of the citation.

A little more than seventy-five years ago, Kate L. Turabian drafted a lot of guidelines to help students understand how to write, cite, and formally submit research writing. The Manual retains three-part structure, leading off with an overview of the steps in the research and writing process, including formulating questions, reading critically, building arguments, and revising drafts. Part II provides an overview of citation practices with detailed data on the two main scholarly citation styles (notes-bibliography and author-date), an array of source types with contemporary examples, and detailed guidance on citing online resources. The final section treats all issues of editorial style, with advice on punctuation, capitalization, spelling, abbreviations, table formatting, and the use of quotations. Everything in this book is very positive and insightful for those writing or executing a research. I liked the way the book is divided, it makes our job easier for us to adopt and apply its orientation to our work. Although I believe it is easy to follow a guideline such as this, I do not intent to say that it is an easy work, it requires a lot of attention and work It will get my work more organized.

Well worth the $$. It has chapters to help you define your topic or hypotheses. Chapters on research, Chapters on deciding who your audience is and then writing appropriately and Chapters on Chicago Style referencing are all included. This book is an easy to follow, step-by-step, writing manual that works for everything from writing High School papers to College and even early-Master's level papers. It has a great 'tree' of starting and then saying if you have your subject, skip to here, if you need to develop a question go to ___ chapter, and so on. Fairly inexpensive and well worth the money.

Turabian is a mainstay as a writing style manual. It would be good if it noted the substantive changes from previous editions, even if they were listed on a website rather than in the volume itself. There are number of changes from previous editions, including the use of headline style (rather than sentence style) book/article titles. I have a paper copy as well as the e-book version. E-books have a ways to go in terms of usability for reference books such as this. Navigating the extensive index, table of contents, and numerous entries for similar matters is a challenge.

What a great manual for people who need to use a Notes-Bibliography, aka, Turabian-Style for important research and essay papers. This current 8th edition helped me document notes with ease. This style makes more sense than a Works Cited list as the Notes-Bibliography satisfies the ultra-inquisitive reader who wants to know who said what, aaaand right naough! Moreover, this Turabian-style lends to writers an air of immediate credibility as each Note is inserted. While Turabian-style is high-maintenance, the style is truly easy to use and very effective for those who need to establish credibility with readers immediately. Love this notation style!

Purchased the 8th edition Turabian manual for the D.Min. program I am in, and having the book in print is really useful. I also have it in an e-Book format but having the book is handy. This book is in perfect condition.

To be such a relied-upon standard of style, Turabian leaves a lot to interpretation. "Check with your professor or department" is not uncommon in this volume. But the worst thing about the book is the index. There are no page numbers. Instead, the index uses section numbers. For example, If you look up citation of manuscripts, you're guided to "17.6.4," then you have to flip through the book until you find that section. It's on page 195; why couldn't the index just list 195? Finding sections is awkward and unnecessarily time consuming because the sections are different lengths, and start in different parts of the page, unlike page numbers which are all in the top corners, and equal length--it's why they're there! I can only assume that the publisher is attempting to save money by not having to re-index the entire work when printing a new edition. To University of Chicago Press: give readers a proper index, please.

If you are in any college major that uses Chicago Manual of Style for citations, then you need to order this book. I am now a doctoral student, and I still wouldn't dare be without the latest edition of Kate Turabian's book. Even with so many resources available online now, it is still really helpful to have a citation guide in book form. For example, during my MA, I had a professor dispute how I cited a source. I was able to whip out my Turabian manual and promptly show him that I followed exactly how the citation should be done, which then resulted in a higher grade. Also, there is a great deal of other helpful advice in here beyond citations; you will find yourself growing into a much better writer and researcher if you really make use of all that this book has to offer.

It is an excellent book for someone who wants to pursue research seriously, especially for a newbie. I would highly recommend it for students who want to inculcate the habit of thinking critically.

This is a really well-written book, which takes the reader from the basics. It is easy to read. Would recommend to all students.

It is a previous edition of the same book, but for a significantly lower price. Works for me!
