Great stone!!
The King KDS is a staple in the sharpening community, often recommended as a classic "first real stone" for home cooks and hobbyists alike. Performance: The "Muddy" Workhorse 1000 Grit Side (Sharpening): This side is a "soaking stone" that produces a significant amount of gray slurry (mud). This slurry is actually beneficial, as it helps prevent the stone from clogging and aids in a smooth sharpening feel. It is effective for restoring dull edges and creating a solid, "toothy" edge suitable for most kitchen tasks. 6000 Grit Side (Polishing): This side is much smoother and is designed for refining and polishing the edge to a mirror-like finish. Many users find it performs best as a "splash-and-go" surface rather than a full soaker. Key Characteristics Feedback & Feel: Known for providing excellent "tactile feedback," making it easier for beginners to feel if they are holding the correct angle. A great upgrade from diamond stones
After using diamond stones for several years, I decided to upgrade to water stones. After much research, this combination stone seemed to be the best option as far as quality and price. I was not disappointed. The stone arrived wrapped well in bubble wrap, but the tight bundle was then placed loosely in a much larger box and allowed to tumble freely inside. A corner of the 6000 grit side was damaged, but the stone is otherwise intact. I didn't notice anyone mentioning this in other reviews, but my stones have a distinct odor. It's not something I expected, not sure if my stones are unusual in that respect. So, I mention it here as my observation. I had no difficulty in developing a slurry and sharpening many types of tools and knives. The fine surface finish left by the 1000 stone is unlike fixed abrasive products like sandpaper and diamond stones. The surface of the sharpened item has no distinct "scratch pattern" but rather a "cloudy" or "frosted" appearance. The 6000 grit surface yields the same style of finish, but just shy of mirror polish. Using green honing compound on a pine strop brings the finish to a bright, flawless mirror finish somewhat faster and easier than I can get from my diamond plates (which only go to 1200 grit). Very pleased with my purchase and enjoy my new sharpening stones.

Excellent value!
This is the cheapest stone I would buy. I have more expensive water stones, but I found myself using this most often unless I really need to put a new edge on a knife. This is much better for maintenance and what’s great with the harder steel that you find on Japanese chef knives. There is a cheaper version at about half the price, but it is smaller and made of soft materials., So this one will last longer and we’ll do a better job sharpening steals above 60 Rockwell. The cheaper stones you’re seeing here are not worth your time or money. Get this as a minimal

Seems okay, worked for a while
I got this stone as a beginner, which I know now I probably shouldn't have done. The stone is amazing at first, but being new to it all I hadn't looked into using a whetstone a lot. The concept of leveling stones never occurred to me, and of course this didn't come with one and the manual is all in Japanese. After a short while you will wear down a spot in the middle of the stone if you are not keeping it level with a leveling stone. It's also fairly easy to cut grooves into this stone if you're a beginner. The stone also had a terrible chemical smell when I opened it that didn't go away for months. The fine side took on stains etc extremely easily and I cannot stand the feel of it on the blade, it doesn't feel right at all. Despite the flaws you can still obtain very good results using the stone. However, with all of the quirks associated with this stone, in my opinion a diamond stone is just far superior all around.

Quality Stone, Recommended
Very good stone for quality steel. I use it for my kitchen knives, in the home. Unless you're a pro and sharpening knives almost daily, this is all you need for your good knives, and it will last a long time. I'm using it on knives that have a hardness in the Rc 55-62 range. It develops a burr pretty quickly on hard steel. Unless your knives have been abused and need complete reconditioning, the 1000 grit side will bring your dull knives to an apex and create a burr fairly quickly. My standard of sharpness is pretty high, so I use the 6000 grit most of the time. It's rare that my knives get so dull as to require the 1000 grit side. This stone, and a leather strop block, will be pretty much all the sharpening equipment you will ever need. One negative about this stone is that the instructions are not in English. The instructions are the blue card in the first photograph, and I believe that they are in Japanese only. Requires minimal soaking for the 1000 grit side. The 6000 grit side is splash and go. After trying some cheaper stones, I'm glad I found and purchased this one. There is a less-expensive 1000/6000 King stone available. Spend the extra few bucks and get this one.

Great stones... as simple as that.
this has been great to fix my kitchen and pocket knives. if you had a knife that was super far-gone and dull, then using the coarse side of this might take a while. It would be good to have maybe a 300-400 stone to set the bevel in a shorter time. But for anything else, I really like this setup. You do have to decide on an angle and stick with it for good results. I like 20 ish degress for utility knives, and 17 degrees for kitchen precision. A great tip for the 20-22 degree angle... just imagine a 45 degree angle, and go for half of that. No protractor or special measurement needed. I also have used 22 for kitchen knives in the past and it works great. I only switched to 17 when I got some better japanese knives. If you keep your knives maintained/refreshed, then you'll only need the 6000 side for that. But it's nice to have the 1k side for knives you get off ebay or if you forget and let an edge get too dull. Or if your kid grabs your chefs knife and plays ninja with it on a steel pipe in the garage. :-( and remember to get a flattening stone if you want real precision, like if you're using this for straight razors (which it is excellent for). That will keep this stones' sides perfectly flat. This is easy to use well if you just watch a few youtube videos and keep your angle right.

if youre looking online for your first stone, this is the one they recommended me
I didn't know anything about whetstones but have wanted to sharpen my knives for a long time now. After a bit of reading online, this was the most recommended product. The size is as any other, the material seems to be working as described (sharpening ability?). Watch a few videos and experiment with sharpening your knives. There is nothing difficult besides applying the practice until you get it right. This product at this price was the best I could find. The stone with a wet rag underneath is all you need to be on your way to knife sharpening mastery.

Best stone I've used!
I have more expensive stones that do not work as well. This is the true "one stone" that you can get by with. The 1000 is coarse enough to realign edges and the 6K is great for polishing up! I read where the guys that are really good say its IMPORTANT to get the "KDS" version of this stone. I like it so well I have given this stone as gifts! That's how good it is! I still do use my 600 grit stone so I can cut blades down that are way uneven. I but old knives that have good steal and refurbish them. So I use the 600 grit for fixing other peoples flaws they put in the blades by uneven sharpening. But once I get them trued up this KDS stone is the only one ever needed. It's money well spent!

it works!
1st time using a stone, which took well about an hour of messing around to achieve a beveled sharp edge on my old 20+yr old chef knife with the help of youtube. Definitely more practise to get it perfect. Not knowing over the years, the use of a sharpening steel has 'honed off' the bevel edge ie taking off the sharp edge. This stone is perfect size & weight. I've made an ad-hoc sink support which works perfectly with this stone. Strongly recommended even for beginners like myself

Arrived earlier than expected, in perfect condition and packaged really well. Perfect whetstone for those not wanting to spend an unnecessary fortune but still wish for the best results even if it means putting in a little more effort. King as a brand is time tested and a well trusted and known brand providing you with a quality product at a truly remarkable price point. Stones above the capability of the King KDS provide no exceptional relevance other than the time you put into sharpening your blade and honestly I enjoy the experience of honing a blade to perfection so the more time I get to spend sharpening the better the experience. The 1000 and the 6000 grit combo is a great place to start and if you wish to polish further then king also offer a further selection and also at a great and affordable price.

High quality stone, exactly as advertised
I've been using this stone for about 6 months now and have used it dozens of times to sharpen a number of different types of knives, from butcher knives to bushcraft knives to small pocket knives. This stone does exactly what it's supposed to do, and well. It feels high quality and the grits seem fairly accurate to what they're claimed to be - the 1000 side sharpens, while the 6000 side polishes. I often find that I don't need to use the polishing side to get an acceptable edge if I'm in a hurry, but after a polish the blade is sharp enough to shave with. It produces a nice slurry as you go, and has not deteriorated or begun to dissolve with usage like some of the cheaper ones tend to do. Overall a great product, would buy again.
