HUTSULS 12 piece Mini Chisel Set

**update** I had these for over a month before someone decided they needed them more than me and stole them. I saw one poor review in particular and felt the need to update. I have not had a blade break or bend on me like they do with the cheap overseas versions and I absolutely can NOT believe the review that said they were like butter ... especially since the owner takes extraordinary care to ensure you are happy and will take care of any issues quickly. Same review also complained about them not staying sharp. They are like any knife or tool, you must maintain them and since they are so small and the edge so thin and sharp, you should do some quick maintenance before and after every use. Use a leather strop and just do a couple quick swipes and that will help to ensure they stay sharp. If you're not sure what a strop is or how to use one do a quick youtube search. They are super easy for beginners to use and do not take up tons of time. I'm still happy with my purchase even though they grew legs. Now I have to order another set. Thank you for being such an awesome person and for the hard work and care that goes into your products.** With the price point of this product you now have zero reasons to purchase it's overseas counterpart that is of lesser quality. They're comfortable in my hands, sharpen easily, have have not snapped where cheaper ones I've owned have and has a maker and seller that goes above and beyond in making sure his customers are happy. I'll be buying a few more sets to give as gifts and look forward to purchasing other items from this man and his company in the future.

If your just starting out this is a very good set for the price.

They would be just fine for bass wood or any conifer, but a few minutes with one tool on some African padauk and another tool on some cherry and the edges were so dented and curled they would be better saws than carving tools. They didn't chip, which let me know they were not over hardened, but that they were not hardened and tempered at all. This is a HUGE miss by this company. As my picture shows, the blades are black, well, this isn't how they came. Read below to see how I tempered and hardened them and made them better than they should be for $15. Luckily, the blades can simply be pulled out of the handles with a little effort and a pair of pliers. So, I removed all of the blades, got a metal can and filled it up with motor oil. Then proceeded to heat the blades by holding the tang in a pair of pliers and applying direct flame with a map gas torch, to a bright orange glow on the edges and quench them in the motor oil 1 at a time until I couldn't handle them. I then sharpened the blades with a 1k grit stone, then heated them to 350° (you can do this in the oven) and then immediately plopped them back into the motor oil for the final hardening. Last but not least. I ran the edge on a leather strop to a mirror finish and now they are shave sharp and rock hard around 62 HRC. Now they cut much better and retain a cutting edge much, much longer.

Great Product and Great Service .

Sharp out of the box. Great for wood projects or other carving activities. I used it on pumpkin carving. worked great! not sure if Hutsuls approves of this use, but just take care of the tools and I'm sure they will last years!

First, packaging and shipping was great and they came fast. I want to try carving but didn't know what to buy and how could you go wrong with such an affordable set. They arrived very sharp and all chisels were able to slice through a walnut block I had on hand with ease. They sharpen well. Part of what I wanted them for was to carve baked Fimo and they handle that cleanly and wonderfully. I also used a few of them on my jewelers lathe for some very small turning on hardened clay, fimo, and a tuaga nut and they did the job. A friend came to see them and she liked them enough that I just ordered her a set. I don't know how well these will last, but I won't be putting them through any difficult paces and so expect them to be useful for a long time. I'm pretty happy with the chisels, and more than happy with the company.

I have bought several tools from Hutsuls and never had an issue until I received this knife set. I gave it three stars because these knives needed work out of the box in order to be useful. They weren't sharp at all. Some of the blade edges were chipped, and all the edges were dull. No worries for me, however. After a little time on the whetstones and strops, These blades were razor sharp and held their edges well. I bought this set to use when carving eyes in basswood and walnut. Once they were sharpened, I had no problem recommending them to anyone. Don't expect to receive them ready to use out of the box. Also, and this is a personal preference of mine, I wish the manufacturers would lay off the spray lacquer finish. I understand the purpose, but I would just as soon as I receive the tools without that because it creates a cheap, sticky feel to the tool. So, enough complaining. As always, Hutsuls is a standup company, and I am sure if I brought this to their attention, they would have gone out of their way to make it right. I chose to keep this set because Hutsuls is a small business, and shipping back and forth costs real dollars. Instead, if you order this set, be ready to sharpen the blades. You'll be happy that you did.

Very nice set of chisels for small and detailed carving

Ceci est un cadeau qui n'a pas encore été donné et qui n'a pas donc pas servi. Ce que je peux dire pour l'instant, après les avoir observés de près, c'est que ces couteaux sont bien aiguisés et semblent solides, Il est peut-être difficile d'aiguiser de telles lames, mais le bas prix de cet ensemble permettra tout simplement d'en acheter un autre si le besoin s'en fait sentir. J'y reviendrai quand j'aurai des nouvelles du jeune artisan amateur qui aura reçu et utilisé ce bel ensemble.

Best you can get for such a price. Sharp, ergonomic and light weighted. 12 pieces of all types. Highly recommended. Bought for proxxon wood turning. best you can get.
