What’s the diff between this listing’s newer model and the older version? This one says 3.2 and the other says 3.1 yet transfer speeds look the same

actually...there is a difference other than they changed the name. The 3.1 provides data transfer rates up to 5G/sec and 3.2 provides data transfer rates up to 10G/sec. Basically, the 3.2 drive will be twice as fast as the 3.1 drive when transferring data from the same host device. hope that helps.

i got the 2017 USB 3.1 version of this drive and it got super hot and slowly died also it never got close to 300mbs does this one have these issues?

Yes. At least, my brand-new one is giving me about 60MB/s write on either one of two ports that the laptop manual says support 5Gb/s (one USB-A, one a USB-C). Laptop is ASUS Zenbook 3, specifically model UX430UQ. And it's quite hot. Just got it this evening, so we shall see. But if I can't improve this performance, it's going back. I can get at least most of this performance on devices costing 1/4 this much.
