SYRYN has a customer for life if they keep this up!
I have been a regular lap swimmer for over 15 years (also a former US Navy service member). At a minimum I am in the pool twice a week for 35 laps or more. Prior to purchasing the SYRYN, I had a first generation NuDolphin (purchased around 2005) that up and died on me a month and some ago, so I am no stranger to waterproof mp3 and what to expect from them. SYRYN and Swimbuds have both far exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is as optimal as I could hope, and is hugely exceptional for the cost. The instruction booklet was very clear and concise and easy to follow. I use Amazon Music as my go-to after ditching iTunes some years ago (very long story), and every song I have ever purchased through Amazon was very easy to transfer over to my Music folder on my computer (download the desktop Amazon Music app to make it super easy), then it was just drag and drop into the folder for the SYRYN. The device itself is even lighter than my NuDolphin was, and I like that the clip is wide, long, but lies very close to the device. I hook-slide it onto my swim cap and it doesn't budge! The ear buds are phenomenal. They keep all the water out of my ears and keep the sound quality clear and true through flip turns and depths up to 10ft (that's as deep as our pool is). As to the other reviews, I'm not sure why they've had such a hard time with the functions, especially since it's spelled out so easily in the booklet (like, 5th grader would say "duh"). To shuffle songs, simply press and hold the forward and reverse buttons simultaneously until the light indicator switches from red to purple/blue back to red again. To turn off shuffle, repeat. Volume: Press and hold the up/down button (co-located with the reverse/forward buttons... up and reverse, down and forward... up and down are in relation to the audio jack placement) until you achieve the desired sound level. Play/pause: self explanatory Turn on/off: press and hold the play/pause button until the indicator light turns on or off. Seriously, you cannot beat this player for the simplicity, functionality, quality of sound, craftsmanship, etc. I'm definitely glad I went with this player instead of the Diver or the costlier options. Plus, the company who stocks this is a home-run, family-run business. And no, I got absolutely nothing in return for this review.

Game Changer / Magical
Update: Im still using my origional '22 purchase Syryn with origional provided headphones. I use it weekly and take care of it. Ive always dried it after use and kept it in a vented case during travel. Its still working flawlessly. Only challenge is finding new free mp3 music! Past review: I don't usually write product reviews. I purchased my Syren back in June of '22, and said this morning to myself: "I must write a product review." After competitive swimming from 3rd grade, until college years and now lap swimming for life and fitness... at 46Y/O, I wish I purchased these in my 30's! I have swam with ear plugs because my bicept flop in my stroke entry is so loud that I learned silence made lap swimming enjoyable again. It was always the clock on the wall and my mind and thoughts pushing me. 8x100s on 1:40 Then my ex girlfriend came up...Whoa, who's that in the far lane, shes beautiful...oh crap was that my 4th or 5th 100? I'm cheap with electronics. I spend my money elsewhere on items that last. I wait...for the 3rd or 4th generation when I feel I really want a device for my enjoyment. Plus I want a GPS for hunting. And my tri bike needs that new... I wait for prices to come down. I read reviews... I ask others. Should I go with bone conducting, this brand or that... Will it be obsolete? Will I spend more on buying music? I will always regret not getting these sooner! They're truly a game changer. The music is so clear and the quality is so good that it's like there are speakers are under water. I swim with a smile again. I'm whooped in a set and AC/DC hits with Back in Black and I power through into my 2nd wind like I'm back in high-school keeping the pace and not backing down when the set starts to hurt. What? Where's the coach on the deck???? It's just me, the clock, my mind creating the work out, and all my favorite tunes now while I'm swimming. FINALLY! I'm always saying FINALLY a company got it right. Through the flip turns to not needing a swim cap. Keep in mind I had the clear plastic fanny pack that a walkman would be placed inside and the opening would screw down shut to keep the water out. It sucked. And after 3 months of the ear bud cords ripping out in a flip turn that was too snappy or a leak..."copper strands...well there goes the ear bud cord...it's shot." If you like to lap swim. Love to lap swim with the Syren! The sky is the limit on what you're listening to. And it's plug and play drag and drop simple. At least I'm saying this in my 40s and not in my 60s. Who cares what the life guards are listening to now! I'm kicking butt to GNR and Metallica, with some NWA,GreenDay, Flogging Molly,Tchaikovsky,Bagpipes, VanHalen, Johnny Cash, Waylon, and Ice Cube. Tupac, AC/DC, SirMixALot, DefLeopard, Ozzy, Pantera, WhiteSnake, Queensryche, Bob Marley, DMB, MotleyCrue, the list goes on...but I'm swimming to it finally, and forgetting I'm swimming!!!!

WARNING: HEADPHONE JACK CAN DAMAGE HEADPHONES
First of all, I used this MP3 player for about 4 years now. Served its purpose well, which was to put sound in my ears while swimming. Or so I thought. Fast forward to about a year ago, I started using it for regular gym routines, with a pair of my favorite IEMs (which I had been using with 0 issues for 3+ years). Some day after swimming with it, I turned it on and hear a "FZZT" sound - not good. Turns out my L drive for the ear monitor just went almost mute. Okay, I figure, it's been a while exercising with it, surely it was due to sweat damage. Fast forward two or so weeks, I plug in a new pair of IEMs, "FZZZT" - another L ear drive shot, and now I'm down another pair of headphones. At this point, I'm suspicious. Is it truly safe to share the same headphone jack for audio, charging, and file transfer, while using that same headphone port with direct water contact? As it turns out, maybe not. To put it bluntly, I lost two pairs of $50 IEMs (in-ear monitors) on this MP3 player. Fool that I am, I figure, surely this is an old issue with the original version of SYRYN, the one I owned. I emailed the team, thinking hey, maybe they can compensate or explain or assist, instead I am rebuffed immediately and told to contact the headphone company. Yeah, no, their headphones are made flawlessly and I've been using them for well over a decade. Regardless, it's an issue that can only arise from a shorted conductor on the AUX port/headphone jack. Meanwhile, a new SYRYN arrives, as I really loved the product up until then, as I said, very good for sound underwater. Except this one ALSO breaks a THIRD pair's driver, this time on the R headphone, thankfully right away so I am now returning it. I go to my local electrician to check, and lo and behold, confirmation: both the original and newer version have an issue where water contact in the AUX port can SHORT the headphones. And then I remember, that I had to go through 3 pairs of swimming headphones while using my original SYRYN. I had always thought, oh one of the headphones went out because of water getting in, no big deal. No - it was the device itself SHORTING the headphones, every single time. So, is SYRYN good? Yeah, if you want sound underwater - **in only one ear**. Almost guaranteed you will do as I did and damage the headphones, because the only way to avoid it would be to wipe clean the aux port every time prior to use, then power on while headphones are NOT in, and then attach headphones - instructions that do not appear ANYWHERE on the manual, troubleshooting, or pamphlet the device comes with. And yet I'm pretty sure the company is well aware of this issue, as it seems to be a design flaw. TL;DR IF YOU HAVE HEADPHONES YOU CARE ABOUT, DO NOT USE SYRYN WITH THEM. THEY WILL LIKELY SHORT/BREAK/FAIL IN ONE EAR DUE TO THE DESIGN OF THE HEADPHONE JACK. YOU WILL LIKELY NEED NEW PAIRS OF SWIMMING HEADPHONES AT SOME POINT, TOO, SINCE THEY ARE BOUND TO BE DAMAGED FROM REGULAR USE WITH THIS MP3 PLAYER. So there you have it. I'm incredibly disappointed, because like I said, I loved it when it worked. But that love has cost me way more money in headphones than the SYRYN costs, and it already costs enough. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Time to find another swimming MP3 player, I guess.

Excellent customer service; good player for the price
The first player I got seemed to be a dud. I wore it around the house once while cleaning, and it was fine, but first time in the pool it didn't work for more than a second at a time. Customer service was great. It seemed like the device wasn't turning off as it should and thus the battery kept dying. I also couldn't get it to switch from shuffle to playing tracks in order. They sent me a new one very quickly, though I had to pay shipping to send theirs back (I didn't go through amazon, but directly through them). The new one works perfectly. That being said, there are a couple of things I don't like. Since there's no screen, you have to try to memorize Syryn's language of flashing lights. I can barely see the lights when swimming outdoors in the bright sunlight, so I pretty much have to just press play and get in the pool, and not touch it again for the hour I swim. The skip ahead buttons are the same as the volume, so if you don't hold them down long enough, you will switch songs, audiobook chapters, whatever, and be kind of annoyed. The other thing I don't like is the clip. It is too short. It is so close in size to the player (even turned perpendicular) that I can't get a good purchase on the clip with my fingers to get it onto my goggle strap. The last thing I want to do is accidentally press one of the buttons on the player while fighting with the clip! It would be nice if the clip was a bit longer, and I could even attach this one handed. On the positive side, the earbuds are quite good, and stay in well under a cap. The swim cap they provide works better than a normal one because of the extra room in the ears, but I would prefer anonymity to advertising their product. I am not sure about the hair protector cream. I don't think it's better than the Reflect H20 I used in the past, and it takes a lot to really coat my hair (even wet). I think I'd rather pay $10 less for the player and skip the hair stuff. Overall, a nifty little player for the price, with very simplistic features, but easy to get songs on and off, and decent quality of the equipment.

Surprisingly good, and still going strong after more than a year
EDIT5:18 months old and finally starting to have issues. The buttons are becoming unresponsive to presses, it is pretty much hit or miss at this point if it will turn off, or on, or adjust volume, etc. Once on it does work fine, and the audio is just as good as day one. Battery still lasts a week easily, and drag and drop simplicity on file transfers. I have picked up a different MP3 player to try and it has a pretty high bar to get over with the way my Syryn has worked. I would still recommend this item to someone looking for an MP3 player for swimming with out reservation. EDIT4: Nearly 18 months with hardly any issues. Still get 10+ hours out of a charge (I have actually never ran it to dead battery, just charge once a week because it fit my schedule). The buttons are definitely starting to get a bit more finicky, sometimes they require a bit more force than I would like to use. They do still work so I haven't resorted to replacing the unit yet, although that is likely coming before the 2 year mark. However, for the price, nearly 2 years of almost daily usage in the pool is by my reckoning a very good value! I do think they could improve the product with more robust controls, but I still recommend them to my lap partners. END EDIT4 EDIT3: Nearly a year later and the Syren MP3 player is still holding it's own. Still only needs a weekly recharge and gets through 10+ hours in the pool. I have noticed that turning the unit on/off and adjusting the volume is starting to get a bit finicky. The switches don't always register when clicked, but it hasn't gotten bad enough yet for me to ditch the unit. I always unplug the earbuds and rinse and dry the connector, which really helps keep the corrosion down. The earbuds are starting to show their age as the rubber piece is starting to regularly pull off the earbud, leaving the rubber piece in my ear. Very inconvenient, but a little spot of superglue on each bud solved that issue. As they are nearly a year old with almost daily usage, I think they are doing pretty well, but probably will need to be replaced after a year. As for the buttons not always working, not sure if that can be fixed, but for the price of a new unit when it quits working I will probably just buy a new one. This has been easily one of the best aquatics purchases I have made and I recommend them if you are looking for a good lap swimming MP3 player. END EDIT3 EDIT2: After 6 months of daily usage the Syren MP3 player is still going strong. I charge it once a week and it's good for a weeks worth of training sessions (about 10 hours). They can keep the cheap goggles, but the player is worth every penny for me. END EDIT2. EDIT: The headsets that came with the player are touted (Swim buds) as the best water sports buds available. Well, after 2 weeks I was only getting audio from one ear. Check with another set of buds and it wasn't the player. In fact after 3 months of nearly daily swimming, the player has performed flawlessly. I contacted Amazon, and was a little put off that they wanted to replace the swim buds with another brand, AGPTEK SE11 IPX8 Waterproof In-Ear Earphones, Coiled Swimming Earbuds. They rebated part of the cost when I protested, but I finally gave in. The new buds arrived a few days later, and have been perfect ever since! Honestly, they sound better than the Swimbuds did, and the fit is better for my ears. The coiled cord is genius. With the Swimbuds you have to wrap the extra cord up but with these AGPTek ones, you just stretch them out, tuck under your goggle strap, and go. As with the Swimbuds, you need to use some FitGoo to get a good water tight seal. I have also found that f=after each swim you should unplug the buds from the player and clean the plug. At first I just left them plugged in and after a couple weeks the sound was getting weak. Pulled the plug out and noticed that it looked a little corroded. Cleaned with a little alcohol and a scrub pad and back in business. The player has never given me a problem with the buttons. Only problem now is I can't imagine having to swim without them! And bonus if you swim at a crowded pull with a bunch of talkative swimmers, you can't hear them and when they see you rocking out they quit trying to bother you! End EDIT Was a little hesitant at first after reading mixed reviews. I was an age group/HS/college swimmer and now masters with about 45 years of competitive swimming background. Was worried that without wearing a cap these wouldn't make it through a full workout with sprints, multiple strokes, and flip turns. But all those years of singing the last song you heard before hitting the pool finally got the better of me. The goggles are nothing special, just a generic Speedo/Arena/Tyr knockoff, but are comfortable enough for 2 hour pool sessions and definitely more comfortable than my old swedes. The first thing to keep in mind is to follow the recommendation to run the cords under the strap, it makes a difference. The second is that fit is everything. You need the largest earbud adapters that comfortable fit. Too small and they leak which ends up in no audio. Too large and they tend to work their way out. Once you determine which size buds to use make sure you use the fit goo (or vaseline/petroleum jelly) on the buds prior to inserting them. It helps to seal them in and keep the water out. Once the fit has been figured out then it's on to actually using them. I found that they weren't even noticeable attached to the back of my goggles (no cap). Operation of the unit is simplistic which is exactly what I want in a pool accessory. Contrary to what most reviews state, you don't need to pull just audio files to the device. You can pull folders of audio files and it will play them, but does so in alphabetical order by default. If you set it to shuffle mode it will play audio files in random order from multiple folders. After a week's worth of training sessions (1-1.5 hours each) I had to recharge, which works out to about 7 hours of play time. I will update this review after a month, but for now I would say if you are looking to get out of your head in the pool, do it!

Positive - Easy to load mp3's
Positive - Easy to load mp3's, more than adequate storage, battery life very good, volume can be increased enough to hear even quiet mp3's of some speakers, good quality sound, unit does not leak. Excellent customer service - they sent replacement ear piece in less than 3 days (it was still under warranty). Negative - VERY difficult to get it to play songs, talks, etc in ORDER they were listed on the computer. One song finishes, then plays same song. Have to repeatedly press on the forward button to get it to go to the next. This is very annoying when swimming laps as it forces you to stop and play with the button. I reset the unit and tried again. It still repeats the mp3 that just finished but I can manually press button to advance after two-four presses. Perhaps I have a defective unit. This next issue is probably related - the "Shuffle" feature will often repeat the same song, and even if it goes to another song, it often quickly comes back to original song (even when there are 20-30 songs to choose from). The other major problem is that the wires on the earpieces are thin and flimsy. Started hearing music in only one ear and tested main unit with another set of earphones and heard in both ears. It was a broken wire leading to the earpiece. This occurred 6 months after I had the unit, swimming 5x/week on average. A friend I swim with has an identical unit and his earpiece began to have the same problem at 12 months (he was also still in warranty and they sent replacement free as they did in my case).

Pool must have!
First off, this is my second Syryn - I purchased the first one in 2018 - after six years of religious use it finally bit the dust. To me that speaks volumes about the quality of the device. I initially made a switch to another waterproof mp3 player that didn't even seem to work out of the box and was returned. I then came back to my trusty Syryn. I hope that quality continues in the current generation. After the first use with the newest model, it seems everything I loved about the device is still there with some improvements. Given that I'm a pro with adding music, loading all my songs from the old device was easy (and adding new music is easy as well). In the pool, it clipped just as securely to my cap. The included headphones appear to have improved over the version that previously included - we'll see how long they hold up. The headphones from six years ago lasted a few uses before one ear would stop working so I quickly purchased a better pair. The current headphones were more comfortable and had great sound so it'll be great if they hold up. The buttons on the device are just as simple - no frills - although it now tells you if it is on or not. The buttons do wear over time but even after six years the buttons were pretty responsive right up until it wouldn't turn on. All in all this is a great little device if you enjoy have music while swimming laps or just playing in the pool. I look forward to my swim sessions again now that I have a functioning music player (I went a few sessions with the old device stopping mid session or just not turning on before I bit the bullet and replaced it).

Avoid the newer model
Well, I had to buy another one (my review for the first is below and I gave that a 4-star, which I changed to a 5-star rating). But the new one gets a 1-star. I bought it--and again--had to return it ($10 shipping charge on my part). The replacement worked fine but there are issues with it. I sometimes can't turn it on or off. I have to press the buttons over and over, and forget about the shuffle mode. Apparently there are a few songs that the player likes to repeat. Now I'm having problems with the headphones and the buds. I guess I can send it back (and pay another $10 in shipping), but I honestly don't believe I will get a quality product. See my earlier review below. It's been about a month and the replacement unit has worked fine. I use it three times a week for about 75 minutes. The swim buds work really well. All in all, for the price, this is a great deal: quality sound, easy to use, sturdy swim buds, and a reasonable price (with a 1-year warranty. And great customer service. So I"m upping my rating from 4 stars to 5. I'm giving it 4 stars for now, but I plan to update that in a month or so simply because it's too early to tell. This is my 3rd of these types of mp3 players. I first went with the FINIS brand and for the price, I would not advise anyone to get that. Then I went with the ARENA brand and that didn't last very long--so again, I advise against that one too. But let me relate my experience so far with Swimbuds. First, it is very, very easy to use (unlike Arena). However, it only lasted about 40 minutes during the first use, BUT after calling customer service, they agreed to replace the unit free of charge (just shipping on my part). They even expedited the shipping on their end so I mailed out the defective one on a Friday and the replacement was delivered on Monday. (Now that's real customer service unlike what I received with Arena and FINIS). Since then, I've used it 3 times, each time for about 75 minutes. No problems as of now, and all in all, given its decent sound quality, ease of use, and price, if I get a full year out of this device, then it's clearly a 5 star item in my book.

Works perfectly while swimming
This little device has changed my daily pool lap routine with adding music while swimming. Sound is great under water, blocks out 90% of noise but I do hear my splashes extremely faintly,Clips to my goggles. Ear buds keep out the water better than my regular ear plugs when using the gel that comes with the device. Absolutely recommend this mp3 player. Easy to use and download music.

Great product. High quality and great sound
For the price this product has amazing sound quality. It comes with a water hair care product and some gel for helping earphones seal in the ear. The MP4 player is easy to load with music, just copy them and paste from your playlist onto the player. Lasts about 6-7 hours on a fully charged battery. I recently did a 18km swim for charity and the MP4 player was fantastic for entertainment and did not fail me.
