Olive Drab Green Warm Fire Retardant Blanket, 66" x 90" (80% Wool)-US Military Style

If you're looking for a durable, warm blanket to bring camping or throw in the back of your vehicle, look no further. This thing gets the job done. Although if you're looking for something more soft/plush for indoor use, you may want to look elsewhere. This blanket is great for what it does, but they market it as 'Military-Style' because it's moreso a tool than a luxury/comfort item. I took this blanket out for a camping trip around late-spring in the NE United States. As always, I ended up forgetting at least one important item: this time it was the sleeping bag. To make things even more interesting, the beautifully sunny forecast turned out to be not entirely accurate, and we were treated to a Severe Thunderstorm / Tornado Warning for most of the evening into the night; and apparently, this downpour was slightly beyond the water-resistance of my tent, treating me to a night of a continuous light sprinkling of water. Despite this, I stayed warm and dry throughout the night due to this blanket. The blanket was large enough for me to fold it--putting two layers below myself and one above to protect from the wet tent-floor and the sprinkling from above--and I was still covered from head to toe. None of the water managed to soak up through the layers below me, and while I could feel the force of the water drops hitting the blanket above me, none of the wet seeped through to me underneath. This blanket serves all the purposes it claims to, is rugged and durable enough to take a beating, and to top it all off it's only $25. Pros: - Lightweight (Insofar as can be expected of Wool) - Water Resistant - Flame & Cinder resistant - Large size relative to weight Cons: - Sleight fuel-smell on Blanket straight out of packaging (Almost didn't include this, see why below) - Somewhat more difficult to fold/compress down for a backpack than lighter blankets might be. So a lot of reviewers here have made commentary regarding the smell this blanket has when you first take it out of its packaging. While there is definitely a scent of something resembling fuel/gasoline. I believe the smell is a combination of some of the natural odors of the oils in the wool, so potentially the strength of the smell will vary from blanket to blanket. Personally I didn't really notice it unless I was intentionally getting up close and sniffing the blanket. Obviously, everyone has different tolerances and sensitivities for scent so your mileage may vary; but IMO, it's a negligible issue. Additionally, after taking the Blanket out for a single camping trip--without even washing the blanket beforehand--whatever strong chemical smell it had initially is gone.

Alright, here are the essential answers I was hoping for when I was looking for outdoor bedding. My needs were for extended weekend camping with my car near by...I would call it Base Camp needs. Weight is heavy and not what I would want for trekking.The blanket was the largest I could find at a reasonable price. When you open the sealed plastic packaging the retardant smell is subtle but after an hour will fill the room and is annoying. That smell reminds me of musty wool however the blanket is NOT wet, dirty or otherwise anything but brand new. Like another reviewer I washed the blanket twice on cold, gentle cycle. Taking the blanket outside I shook out the "pilling" between washes and then again after the 2nd wash. The dryer was never used as I simply hung the blanket over a radiator when finished. By adding fabric softener the smell was 99% gone and my wife (who is not particularly sensitive) didn't find it offensive. After the blanket dried overnight the finished dimensions were 65-1/4" x 91-1/4". The final weight on a kitchen scale is 3lb 5.3oz. In other words it held its sizing and weight just fine. The blanket is bound on all 4 sides with what appears to be heavy stitching. I see no need spending time at a sewing machine to strengthen these seams. In addition, the wool takes on less water than you might expect. Removing the blanket after the spin cycle I felt mild dampness but nothing like a shirt or jeans coming out...this was a pleasant surprise and indicates high wool content. Some folks have asked what the remaining 20% of the content is and my understanding it's a mix of recycled wool content (think shop floor if you really get down to it) and man made material for strength. It's clearly a heavy duty blanket. To say it's warm is an understatement. We use it as a thermal break under our sleeping bags with 2 of us in our Kelty 3 person 4-Season and it covers the floor entirely. If I were camping solo there would be no problem, at all, with using this under me and folded over for a cover. I'm M-L overall and that feature was important to me. My opinion is using it in this manner would allow a sleeper an extra 10-15 degrees of lower temps vs. going with a sleeping bag alone. By adding a Mylar blanket, this wool blanket and a bag rated to zero virtually anyone would be comfortable to 10 degrees or slightly lower (no telling exactly without considering wind and shadow). Final thought, now that I've handled the product I'll purchase 2 more (one for each car). Although the blanket looks good and feels soft it's still a military appearance (which might be cool for your needs) and that might not fly in the guest bdrm. EDIT: Update to 10-21-16. I ended up ordering and receiving 2 more of these. One for the camper and the other for the car trunk. In the Ohio River Valley the wind can build quickly and weather is notorious for changing without warning. More like a mountain environment than the pleasant sounding "Valley" would have you believe. Like my earlier comments suggested, the blanket is virtually bulletproof. I had to change 2 of our Honda 4-Wheeler tires out and the ground was soggy/muddy with temp in the 40's and a wet wind. By folding over and laying on the ground I could kneel in relative comfort to get the job done. More importantly, using some Woolite Cleaner with a mild scrub brush the darn blanket came 100% clean despite being ground into the soil. I'd guess there was some grease involved as well but regardless it all came out with hardly any effort. It is true that the other 2 blankets needed the same "prep" as the first. A double washing, a thorough shake thru outside and then a couple hours over the radiator. Also, the smell varies with each blanket received...the 2nd of these was considerable stronger than the 1st. Maybe it depends on the storage conditions. Either way, the blanket is still bound on all 4 sides, still tough as nails and generous (to say the least) with sizing. I didn't bother to measure but the amount it shrank through the Washer is negligible. Definitely a cold-weather god send IMHO. Pair it up with a Mylar blanket and it's the perfect base cloth inside the tent. Having camped in the same conditions year after year (after year...) and knowing the expected temperature range at night I did just as I've suggested. No doubt in my mind the comfort zone was extended another 10-15 degrees colder versus just a sleeping pad. Best to you...!

They are decent. They are mid weight but warm. The fire retardant does have an odor, which would be necessary if you use it around a campfire or fire pit so be aware of that

I read several reviews before ordering this blanket so I'd have an idea what I was getting into. I advise you do the same. I wanted a wool blanket for camping, and this one was $20 on a black Friday deal, so I grabbed it. It is made in India, and I have no reason to doubt that the advertised wool content is accurate. I stayed up late one night laundering it. Both washes were on delicate with cold water, both dry cycles were on delicate at low heat. My washer and dryer are not stained or heavily tainted with chemical smell after two cycles. There was plenty of lint in the lint trap after each dry cycle as expected and advertised. On initial opening, the blanket smelled up the house from the fire retardant odor as described by every reviewer. On the first wash, the water was so colored with dye that I couldn't see the bottom of the basin in 7" of water. The second wash, that was not the case. You'll want to wash this at least twice before use so you're not dyeing everything it touches. I did dock half a star for the frayed stitching that I had to burn down, and another half because of the smell that I knew would be there. After two wash and dry cycles, I slept with this blanket on top of my covers. It is very cozy, and I spent much of the next day wrapped up in it like a cloak/robe around the house. Super cozy, not a purchase I regret. The weight is as advertised, around 3-4 pounds. Plenty to be good and cozy. It's a smidge scratchy, but completely tolerable after laundering twice. It'll server well while camping or for cozy days at home!

There are so many types of "military blankets" out there, with a whole lot that are "army style" but evidently not so many that are actually of military issue. Then, of course, as if regular wool is not as warm as military wool, the actual military issue blankets, which at certain times in history have been relatively inexpensive "military surplus," tend these days to be more expensive than the various copies. In preparation for elk hunting this year, my quest has been to find a wool blanket that is actually fairly warm and of a good size to really wrap up in. I bought some 70% wool blankets that were 62x80 inches, and those were good enough that I will have them along on the trip, but then I bought some blankets supposedly like these ones but that turned out to be smaller and made from only 30% wool -- totally false advertising. But I still wanted some good blankets of a size that I could wrap up in and stay warm. I took a chance on this product, and I am happy. This blanket is of the large size advertised, 66x90 inches, which is nice for body coverage. The tag does not say what the wool content is, so I ran an informal test by wrapping myself with the 70% wool blanket, checking how long it took to become uncomfortably warm, and checking to what degree the fabric felt cool to the touch around my hands. Not counting the fact that this blanket has better coverage to begin with, it seemed pretty clear that this blanket was immediately a little warmer than the 70% one, and so I will give it credit that it probably is 80% wool. Being both full sized and quite warm, as well as economical in price, I would buy this product again if I needed more blankets. While it is cold water machine washable, and some people would want to do that immediately to remove the wool smell, I will not do that. The wool smell is not unpleasant to me, having slept in surplus WWII army blankets rather often in my youth, and it reminds me that some good products made with natural materials can still be found. Also, when the blanket does need washing, its warmth does not fare well by sending many of its fibers to the lint trap. Washing by hand in a bathtub and hanging to air dry seems a somewhat more protective way to treat this blanket. This product is made in India, but it seems quite sturdy. The surface weave lies flat, so it is not as prickly and itchy as the older army blankets. I feel that this is a good buy for features, quality, and price.

We bought four of these. They came in separate shipments from different Amazon Warehouses. All four had a mild chemical smell. One washing was all that was needed. They now smell like every other clean wool blanket I have ever encountered. Wool does not smell like cotton or any other blanket. Maybe some people just don't like the smell of a wool blanket.

These high-wool-content blankets are very warm and large enough to keep a person completely covered while camping. Wool is naturally flame retardant (wool can’t sustain a flame by itself) and warm even when wet. Since buying the first one of these, I have purchased additional blankets.

This is the second "Wool" blanket that I've bought on Amazon. The first one was labelled "EVERONE" and was truly high quality. The wool was soft, there was no funky motor-oil smell, there was no shedding, when I used it for building my cloak project it held together and received stitching wonderfully. The project came out so well that someone bought it off my back as I wore it out one cold morning. THIS "Wool" blanket is the complete opposite. It sheds everywhere, smells like a chemical disaster, frays and splits if you so much as look at it sideways and trying to duplicate my first creation has been a disaster. While I have recreated the first project build, the appearance is distressing. You can visually SEE the low quality of the fabric and spots where it is already thin enough to see through upon delivery. The funky chemical smell of this blanket is overwhelming and it sheds so much that just handling it leaves you covered in these little wool fibers that itch and scratch and annoy you to the point of taking a shower to get them off. I'm certain that if I put this in a washing machine or even hosed it down in the backyard it would fall apart like so much fluff. Just working with this material has been a hazardous experience and there's no way I'm actually wearing or selling this product to a customer. This blanket is absolutely trashmatic and if I hadn't already built it into a product I'd have returned it. However, I'm now stuck with this inferior product, garbage from india that should have stayed over there. I will source a proper military wool blanket for my next project. This has been another Amazon fail this holiday season...#2. Funny how everything seems to get horribly bad with this site during the holidays... I'm gonna go take a shower and then vacuum and get the remnants of this $21 disaster out of my workroom.

Blanket is a bit heavier than you might expect (that took me by surprise), but man, does this thing do it's job or what. I'm currently using it to build layers inside my sleeping bag as I survive the winter here in Melbourne, Australia as a swagman. For those who don't know the parlance, that means I'm homeless and survive by stealth camping in the bush. I live out of my swag. Hence, the term, 'swagman.' Anyway, this blanket has been tested so far against rising cold in a camping hammock with a sleeping bag and just this blanket. Temps dropped to about 2 degrees Celsius, and Melbourne winters never get colder than 0 degrees Celsius (we don't use Fahrenheit in Australia, but I know this is an American product and a lot of you buying are going to be Yankees, not Aussies like me. 0 degrees Celsius translates to 32 degrees Fahrenheit), so I would say that's pretty good quality. I highly recommend this army blanket.

Als eerste, er zit inderdaad een vreemde geur aan en ik heb dat met wassen (koud in de wasmachine op een laag toerental) met een wolwasmiddel er een flink stuk weg gekregen. Misschien moet ik de deken gewoon even buiten ophangen. Verder voelde de deken nogal stuk en compact aan, mar na het wassen is het een stuk zachter en heerlijk warm en dik. Ik las bij een van de recensies dat iemand de deken zo dun vond dus ik verwachtte een soort microvezel handdoek kwaliteit, maar hij is echt dik genoeg om er in warm te blijven. Het is een heel ander soort deken dan die gevoerde/ dekbedachtige dekens die veel mensen gewent zijn, maar volgens mij veel effectiever.
