Performed well during the Texas power outages that are ongoing - Feb 2021
Well, one never wishes to test a lantern in this way - but this is why I bought it - for emergencies. We are in the midst of the great power outages that are occurring in Texas due to extreme cold and a power grid collapse. I purchased 6 lanterns months ago - for our emergency cabinet. I keep them prepped with batteries in them, and a date taped to them as to when the batteries were put in - so I am able to always keep good batteries in them to respond in an instant when needed. That system and this lantern worked well this February. Our electricity went out - along with about 4 million other people's electricity and we had temperatures as low as 3 degrees for long periods - we still aren't out of this and only get power part of each day- sometimes for 30 minutes at a time, with many hours with no power each time the electricity fails. Thus, we are lighting our house with lanterns. These are much better than candles - obviously. They are easy to carry by its handle - easier than flashlights, so the ease of portability has been helpful. We do have some lanterns that are lighter, but their batteries ( AAs) aren't lasting as long. This lantern has held up for 3 nights so far and it has been bright enough for our needs. I have it on our kitchen counter, with another lantern on our coffee table. I have not had it in continuous use, as we don't need it in the day, and I turn it off by 2 a.m . each night. It has been a real help to us in an actual emergency. I feel for neighbors and others that only have flashlights, or candles. It is not possible to get lanterns once the emergency is upon us. Stores have no electricity and are closed, roads are in terrible shape, not safe to drive. There is no mail delivery. So unless you have these already purchased, stored and ready to go, only a helicopter landing in your backyard could get these to you during an emergency. So my message is - this has been a great lantern for our needs. Get several lanterns. Keep batteries in them . Label them noting when the batteries were put in. Keep fresh batteries in them. Keep extra batteries in storage as well. We may be without power for a week. We were able to stay in our home because we have reliable lighting with lanterns, and our heat source is a gas fireplace. Others have fled to hotels - if they could find one with power and with an available room. I am so happy to have been prepared with lanterns, this one included. Great lesson for our kids - even adult kids. I gave one adult daughter one of these same lanterns - her batteries are old, so she doesn't have a lantern to use. So - good for her to learn the importance of keeping emergency gear in working order. The first night our power went out, I went to our cabinet, took out the lanterns, put them on our kitchen counter ready to go, took one back to the bedroom, etc. Didn't miss a beat.

Compact Size, Bright Illumination, Flashing Finder Light
I purchased this AYL Starlight Lantern as a precautionary light source should my elderly Mom experience a temporary loss of power. I chose this lantern for it's easy to carry size and design to help extended battery life during use. It's very easy to operate. By just depressing the button she can choose two levels of brightness. You can also engage the function where the lantern will flash on and off repeatedly. This is ideal should a visual alert be needed in a state of emergency. What's really clever and much appreciated is the small green light located near the power button that continually and intermittently flashes even when the lantern is turned off. This feature makes it easy to find in the darkness. For its size, this compact lantern gives off a bright, room filling light. I'm impressed with the overall quality especially at this reasonable price. I've posted some photos and hope that they, along with my experience, helps you out a bit with your choice. I'm impressed with value and honestly believe you will be too! Thank you.

Sturdy unit, bright enough but difficult to install batteries
The unit is very sturdy and looks like it can handle any situation. The black colored parts are a hard rubber that will take considerable impact without the lantern being damaged. It uses 3 D batteries which makes it heavier than models that use AA batteries. But, D batteries last considerably longer in use so that far outweighs the weight difference in my view. The main issue with all these lanterns is the actual brightness. Forget trying to translate lumens, luminous flux, bulb wattage (which is a measure of power use, not light), LED panels vs bulbs and so forth. You will be totally in the dark so to speak. Here's the poop. This lantern has a low and high selection with the high stated at 600 lumens, the low selection is about 400 lumens which makes light equivalent to a 40 watt incandescent bulb in a light fixture. 600 is roughly equivalent to a 50 watt bulb. That should give you a perspective on how bright it will light up a room. A camping tent will be very bright. Your living room not so but you can still do most functions without problem. Much better than an ordinary flashlight and you can sit it down so as not to do everything one handed. It has a handle for carrying and hook for hanging. Overall, a lantern like this is essential in a power outage situation. The downside on this lantern is installing the batteries. You have to align arrows and marks. Sounds simple but these are on the inside of the lantern and you can't see them as you try to close the base. The battery posts are on a rotating mount which spins freely. So, you align the arrows looking from the outside. As soon as you move the base to attach it, the mount rotates and the arrows no longer align. On an on you go until you get lucky. If the lights go out, you will not get it assembled in the dark. So, you have to put it together and leave it ready for future use. It has a little pilot light that blips constantly burning off the batteries but they state batteries will last 2 years on standby.

BEST LANTURN YOUR GOING TO FIND!
I own about 50 lanturn, about 45 are Coleman oil lanturns and about 5 battery powered lanturn. This lanturn right here is by far my BRIGHTEST battery powered lanturn, it may even be brighter than all my lanturns to be honest. I've noticed with lots of battery powered lanturns majority of the light is either focus up or down. Well I have really good news for you. This lanturn right here is just about flush all the way around 360*. As far as your eye can see, this light lanturn can shine your way through it all. I had 2 lanturns on a 500 and a 600 lumen lanturn lit both at my night fishing spot, well I decided to test which of my 3 lanturns were brighter. I turned this one on, hands down blew them out of the water. There was no competition, I can't can't describe how bright this lanturn is, it over powered 1,100 lumens of light. May I also add, I thought this lanturn was going to be a large decent size lanturn like my others. I was wrong, this thing is small/medium size. It's very compact. Takes less battery's and light more. I just can't cover everything this lanturn can do rather than others on the market. If you gave me this lanturn and told me to guess it's retail sell, I'd tell you $70-100 range. Quality is 8-10 some parts could've made beefier but it is more than plenty. Please do yourself a favor, buy this lanturn I'd you do any camping, hiking, fishing, or anything at night. You won't regret it.

Great lantern
This little lantern is great! It provides a lot of light. You'll be surprised at just how much light you get from one of these. I bought one and tried it out. It impressed me so much that I immediately bought another one. I live in Seattle and we don't get a lot of power outages, but when we do; we are all a bit lost. Most people don't have generators and we all find ourselves running around our homes with flashlights, which is a bit awkward. This little lantern will provide more light than even the largest flashlights and you can place it on a table, or what have you instead of lighting candles. It also has a handy and sturdy handle, so that you can carry it about. It takes a handful of D batteries, which is actually better than most of the lanterns that you'll see for sale. Most are rechargeable, which sounds great until you have a power outage and realize that you haven't charged your lantern for months. :-) Buy a couple of these and keep a pack of D batteries handy. You will be glad you did, the next time your lights out. Oh, and this little device is water resistant too! Great for camping.

Well Designed Product
My mom lives in a semi-rural area and I gave her one of these a year or so ago because they get power outages more than I would like. She really likes it. I recently bought two for my house. I've got one hanging from a Christmas stocking hook on my fireplace in the great room, and one in my bedroom. I haven't needed it for a power outage yet, thank goodness, but I have tested it out a bit. I seems to be well made and sturdy. I don't know why some complain about it not being bright enough. I think it's surprisingly bright for such a small device, and more than adequate for most situations. They could make it brighter if they wanted but you would trade off battery life. Also, what's with people griping about D cells? It's not like they are some exotic and hard to find commodity. You don't need a pig to sniff them out like truffles in a forest or whatnot. I bet a 9V transistor cell or one of those clunky 6V lantern batteries would blow their minds. This light is designed for long battery life and I assume their engineers determined D cells were the best option for a device this size with its particular circuitry. So quit griping about D cells. And you can go ahead and get off my lawn.

Two thumbs up
As a commercial electrician with 30+ years in the field, I know a little something about lighting. My crew and I just upgraded a 54 story office building with 14,000 lighting fixtures with LED technology. LED lights generate very little heat, so the majority of the energy is converted into usable light. This lantern is a good example of how we can get the most bang for the buck. It's surprisingly bright in Low Mode, very bright in High Mode and has the added Strobe Light feature that is very desirable for emergency situations. I got this for my mother-in-law who just moved into Senior Housing last year and could use a bed-stand emergency lantern in the event of a power outage or to rummage through her basement storage locker. Everyone in my family knows I've been a flashlight fanatic forever and a day. Nothing speaks to personal safety more than adequate lighting, especially in the electrical field. Couple this lantern with some top notch Pro Cell batteries and you have an unbeatable camping or household emergency standby lantern. I'm ordering more for others in my family who don't have backup generators. Here in the Pacific NorthWest region, you can count on power outages. For twenty bucks, you can't beat this compact, powerful lantern.

I knew there had to be a better way of signaling or using a unique type of ...
Anyone besides me ever go outside in the dark, move around, only to find out that you've lost your bearing? Now, in my case, I knew I was unable to see much in the darkj. After spending 20 minutes walking around, I finally found my way back to the right door. I didn't want to repeat that mistake again. I knew there had to be a better way of signaling or using a unique type of lighting, to find my way back to the right door. After an exhaustive search on Amazon, I found this lantern to be the solution to my dilemma. It's water resistent, has two bright LED bulbs, and is the right size. After receiving the light, I installed the three D cell batteries and tested it out. The lantern works as advertised. Others' positive review of this lantern is "spot on." I tested it that night by placing the lantern, in the flashing mode, at the garage door. I was able to take the dogs out to relieve an find my way back easily, thanks to the flashing light. Being that we're in the midwest where power outages occur from time to time due to inclement weather, I decided to purchase two of these lanterns. PROS: Water resistent, right size, three lighting modes (low, high, flashing) CONS: None noted

Five days use on one set of batteries is most impressive.
It feels light and is very bright, way better than the other small emergency lights I have. I plan to use it if and when we have that big blackout. A very useful feature is the flashing green light that tells you it's charged and ready for use.
