This is one kitchen gadget I will keep using
Now firmly in middle age I’m a staunch anti-gadget gal. One task gadgets better earn their place in my tiny kitchen or they’re banished to the basement cabinet forever. That cabinet is getting full so I try hard not to buy kitchen gadgets. I’m talkin’ to YOU air fryer! Not buying one I don’t care how many people rave about them they’re next years instant pot sitting lonely in a corner unused. I do love an egg & toast in the morning though and drive up can make me late as well too expensive for daily breakfasts. So I bought this egg sandwich maker. I really like it. I tried it with bread, biscuits and want to try with croissant and mini bagels in the future. I use whole egg and break the yolk. I crudely trim the bread to fit-a nice firm rye, whole wheat or sourdough works best but soft works too. I tried using very lightly buttered bread facing out and I prefer that way though it smells up the kitchen like fried food. Using dry bread is okay too but I like a thin smear of butter. Add a slice of cheese and ham if I have it and its a great cheap breakfast. Quick, too. I turn it on to preheat and cook the sandwich as I feed the dogs, then wrap in a pc of foil and get dressed for work. They’re pretty hot straight out of the machine so I like to wait a little while to eat it, some days I just eat it at work. One thing I don’t like is scrambling the egg, it comes out weirdly fluffy like a soufflé. I prefer my scrambled eggs softer and more curd-like if that makes sense and they’re not to my spoiled taste so I just do a whole egg w/a broken yolk so I don’t wear my yummy breakfast. Yes I could fry an egg on the stove in about the same time BUT this is so easy, no dish/pan to wash, just wipe the plates and its clean. Also its basically no effort, similar to making a pot of coffee imo. And I’m not paying over $3 for one egg, a pc of cheese and 2 pc bread. My cost is well under a dollar and its fresh and exactly the way I like it. Highly recommend this. One last thing-if anyone out there knows where to get a soft english muffin like mcds uses I’d be forever in your debt. Or a recipe. The english muffins in my area (Michigan) aren’t soft and squishy they’re tougher and chewier and I love them toasted to death but this egg sandwich maker only warms the outside obv doesn’t toast the inside. We have Thomas, Bays and have tried Wolfermans, I want that soft white bread style mcds uses.

Easy and fast to use. Easy cleanup.
Great!

Cooks in five minutes
I like this. The only thing I dislike is that it comes apart too easily when I don't want it to and it tends to want to scoot back when opening. But it cooks well and doesn't burn anything.

This thing is so stupid. I love it.
Yes, of course this is an absurd one-off speciality kitchen appliance. Of course you don't need it. Of course it's just going to take up space on your counter. Of course you can just make a breakfast sandwich yourself using your stove. But to look at it strictly from this perspective completely glosses over how convenient this thing is. Is the convenience worth the embarrassment of not just manually assembling things? Of course it is. Let's be honest here - the competition for this contraption is not you toasting your english muffin, poaching an egg, and frying up some sausage to assemble into a sandwich. The competition is not having breakfast. Or just running to McDonald's because it's so much simpler. So I'll admit it - I'd frequent McD's for a sausage mcmuffin with egg. I'd also frequently have an energy bar or a donut or some other basically junk breakfast. I have manually made egg sandwiches by cooking and assembling the ingredients, but that's more of a special occasion thing - it just took too much time. Even if it was 5-10 minutes of cooking/assembling, it was time that I was _actively_ working on it. And I'm lazy/busy, so it was always a low priority. Even when I got the ingredients, I'd tend to do it once and then let the english muffins get moldy over the next few weeks as I didn't do it again. Not to mention washing all the pans. But this thing changed everything - I'm literally making one of these every day for breakfast. And it's delicious. I pick my own high grade eggs, good quality butter, the english muffins I like, a good cheese. it's all fresh and it tastes way better than the fast food version. And it's basically no effort - it's a few minutes to pre-heat it (and you do other things during that), 30 seconds to assemble on the machine, 5 minutes to cook (again, do other things), a few minutes to cool (again, do other things), and you eat. It's awesome. If you're looking at this thing and reading this review, you're debating it as well. I'm sure you're doing the same mental gymnastics I did - it's a waste of money, it's a speciality item, I could just do it by hand, why would I bother buying this device when I know how to make eggs on the stove, etc. But the much more important question to ask yourself is - When was the last time you did any of that? If you're assembling your own sandwiches made on your stove with regularity, then by all means continue to do so - you absolutely do not need this. But if you're not...then get it. Tossing these things together quickly and getting something really tasty with basically no effort is FAR better than going out for something or not making it at all. You're not competing with the prospect of making it on the stove - you're competing against the prospect of not doing it at all. It's okay. Just buy it even though it's ridiculous. You'll really enjoy it. The one thing I really don't like about it is its lack of a switch - you have to unplug it to turn it off. So pick up a cheap outlet switch as well so you can plug the cooker into that and flip it on/off at the wall instead of plugging/unplugging. They really should add a switch to the unit.

I wonder if my local McDonald's thinks I'm dead
So it all started a while back with the McDonald's app offering me 50 cent Egg McMuffins, so every morning I'd find myself in the drive through getting one. Then they had me and changed the offer to $1 Egg McMuffins and I was still in, every day stopping there, the workers calling me by name and telling me to have a great day....it was all part of the routine. But then my husband challenged the idea. Even at 75% savings, there was still the time in the drive-through, the vehicle idling, there had to be a better way, right? So we looked at reviews, we watched videos on Youtube, I was skeptical, but try to be a team player. We ordered it and I made my first sandwich. I didn't exactly follow the instructions, but it was pretty good. Like comparable to McDonald's. And my prep time was under five minutes, and the ingredients (purchased on sale) came in at around 83 cents. (Note - currently egg prices are high so they're a little more now, but definitely cheaper than a full price Egg McMuffin) Second time I made one I followed the instructions more, but found it wasn't quite as good as the first one I made, so I started experimenting. I now have it down to a science - a new routine. I wait for the unit to heat up, the put the bottom of the muffin with the Canadian bacon on, then for the next layer a tiny squirt of cooking spray before cracking the egg. It's important that the unit be heated for this as then the egg cooks at the edges quickly to seal up where the parts come together. Once the egg is in, I poke the yolk with a fork and close the top. I do NOT put the top of the muffin on at this point - the top seems to need less cooking, so I wait. I give it about five minutes, add the top piece then cook for another minute. At that point, I pull the whole thing off and put it on a plate. If I add the cheese at that point, it gets a little goey, as the American cheese melts super fast on the hot egg and is very runny. If you wait a few minutes for it to cool down, then it's closer to McDonald's. So I go back and forth on this, depending on my mood. But here's the cool part - you don't have to just make Egg McMuffins on this thing. There's lots of other sandwiches, and sometimes I'll substitute sliced bacon for the Canadian bacon, but know what's even better? Making gooey cookies on it. Yeah, it's awesome. I take a small piece of parchment paper (you can buy individual squares that fit ok, you just have to round them up since you're putting it on a circular spot. Then you dump some cookie dough in there, monster cookie dough is pretty good, as is oatmeal chocolate chip - and the oatmeal makes it healthy, right? Of course! I cook for 5-7 minutes and it's super gooey still. When I'm feeling even more decadent, I'll throw a couple scoops of ice cream or frozen yogurt in a cup and then stick the gooey cookie stuff on top of it. What a way to start the day! Admittedly the design could be a little better - there are a few spots where egg goo can get in and it's hard to clean it out, like neat the hinges/screws, but overall it's a game changer and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it works. Ironically I found one of these sandwich makers at a garage sale for $3 the day after my Amazon one came in the mail. I was already so enamored with mine though that I bought that one as a back-up - I just don't want to go a day without my Egg McMuffin! And now when I drive past McDonald's on my way to work, I wonder if they wonder what happened to me.

Buy the thing UPDATING TO BUY THE THING AND REPLACEMENT SCREWS
UPDATE MARCH 2, 2024: I dropped two stars from this. I haven't used the thing in over two months. Why? Because every screw holding it together is solid rust. I saw a couple other reviews mentioning this and am surprised there's not more. So now I can either toss the thing despite it being a rather clever and nice appliance, or hopefully extract at least one of the screws, go to some hardware store somewhere, ask the nice people there if they can match the screw in a STAINLESS STEEL VERSION, pay them money, bring it home, hope I can extract all the other screws, hope the new ones actually do work and that my old, untalented fingers can manage screwing them in, and only THEN might I be able to again use the thing. I dislike hassles. I buy things on Amazon to avoid hassles. Hence the passage of at least two months since it rusted and it still sitting on my counter untouched. So, hey, manufacturer. If you'd like to just send me a new one of these with stainless steel screws, I'm all in for it. I like the mint green. I'll even send you the stupid-screw one if you want it. I'm so torn between really liking it and really not liking hassles, but honestly, I wouldn't gift one to anyone as is or really even be able to advocate for the thing now. I won't bring it up out of the blue, but if someone says, wow, you have such a cool sandwich maker, then I'll have to say, yes, but it involved tassle, and they'll say why, and I'll tell them, and we'll both be bummed about it, and that person will never buy one because they don't like hassles, either. No one likes hassles. Mint green with stainless steel screws. See what you can do. I'm a gadget-aholic, but this was a stretch even for me. Who needs this thing? I have wonderful cast iron pans, a top-notch toaster oven, and the ability to cook everything that goes into a breakfast sandwich - so why bother with this? Because it is WONDERFULLY easy. That's why. It works every time, I never don't make a breakfast sandwich because I don't want to wash it (it's a 30-second chore to clean), and I can snub my nose at the Mc-place I used to go to for these when they cost half what they do now. Win-win-win.

Veggie Sausage Works Too!
This product lives up to the hype. I have to admit I am a bit of an appliance junkie. But as a vegetarian, and someone who has very little time in the morning to eat breakfast, my fast food options are limited to Starbucks and Panera Bread drive thru ($5/sandwich +$5 for a coffee drink I'm always tempted to get) or a donut from the Krispy Kreme drive thru (cheaper but not a very balanced breakfast). So when Amazon suggested this for me, I read the reviews and I was convinced although I was a little hesitant because like I said I am a appliance junkie and often buy useless crap I never end up using again. But this has already paid for itself in a week of breakfast at Starbucks/Panera. I even didn't entirely read the directions at first and didn't "season" it with oil and it still was fine to clean. In fact all I needed was a damp paper towel. So far I've used it all week without any oil (I probably will start once I get to the store and buy some of the natural version of Pam from TJ's) and I've yet to have to do more than wipe it down. Anyways, I noticed a lack of reviews on vegetarian meats so here is what I've done: I've used Trader Joe's extra sourdough english muffins, Morningstar Farms maple flavored frozen veggie sausage, a free-range egg, and a slice of organic mild cheddar cheese. I was worried the frozen veggie sausage wouldn't cook all the way through since some people complained about that with their frozen Jimmy Dean sausage, however it was perfect for my Morningstar Farms veggie patty straight from the freezer. The only problem was the sausage patty was too thick to put cheese on top without closing all the way. So what I did was break up my slice of cheese into 1/4ths and pile it on top of the raw egg right before I put the top muffin on so the egg cooks with the cheese. I think it comes out really well this way. I cook for the whole 5 minutes and I don't set the timer until I close the lid. Some people complained about raw egg touching the english muffin, but I think of it like french toast and actually really like it! I have many more options to try and am excited to be no longer limited to only one vegetarian sandwich item on the menu and pay a small fortune to buy it. I just wanted to share a few ideas I had for other vegetarians (often I find many vegetarians aren't aware of just how many meat substitutes are out there). - Yves Meatless Canadian Bacon - This is really good and so is their pepperoni! In Seattle they sell it at PCC, but I imagine in other cities you might be able to find it at natural foods stores and sometimes I see it at Fred Meyer. - Morningstar Farms Bacon, Sausage Patties, and Sausage Links - I've seen these sold in every grocery store - Quorn naked "chikn" filets - this is the only vegetarian chicken I've had that actually has the same texture as chicken and tastes just like it. You can also buy their strips as well. Fred Meyer/QFC has the best selection and price but I've also seen it in other stores as well such as Whole Foods. - Tofurky deli slices - I love these so much. They taste just like turkey lunch meat. These can be bought almost anywhere, I've seen them the cheapest at Trader Joe's. - Lightlife Veggie Sausage and Bacon - I like how their ground veggie sausage comes in a tube. Most of their products are refrigerated instead of frozen. Anyways, I could go on about the exciting possibilities, not to mention what you could do with tofu and endless different kinds of cheese (Trader Joe's has a pretty amazing selection!) as well as veggies and herbs. Bottom line: If you are trying to talk yourself out of buying this because you think you don't need it or its a waste of money, just stop thinking and buy it, you won't regret it!

Excelente compra
