Ring Legends of Tolkien (7) (Tolkien Illustrated Guides)

I've been a fan of David Day for 40 years—ever since I was 12 years old and found a copy of his A Tolkien Bestiary in a used bookstore. It was the first work written about Middle-earth that made me want to delve deeper into the mithril mine of Tolkien's imagination. The Ring Legends of Tolkien is another fascinating study of Tolkien by Day. This is the latest volume in his the World of Tolkien series published by Thunder Bay Press. These 6” by 8" smaller tomes (just the right size for a Hobbit), are richly illustrated with faux leather covers. I've included a photo of the stunning endpapers by illustrator Mauro Mazzara depicting the influence of the Norse legend of Odin on Tolkien's creation of Sauron and Gandalf. In this book, Day sets out to explain how Tolkien's vast knowledge of ancient lore, legends and language influenced The Maker of Middle-earth’s creation of the The One Ring—influences as diverse as alchemy, Norse and German sagas, Celtic and Saxon myths, and Judeo-Christian beliefs. JRR Tolkien is one of my favorite authors, and David Day seems to know so much about the stories and their origins. I knew much, but not as much as David Day does about the Silmarillion and the famous Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings, and the Lost Tales, and other works of JRR Tolkien. These books have opened my eyes to new ways of seeing Tolkien’s works. David Day has answered so many questions especially about the sources of the rings and why Tolkien focused so much on rings in the Lord of the Rings. This book is about the sources of the ring legend.

This entire set reminds me of a very wonderful student thesis on Tolkien. Full of all the withertos and whyfors of the many possible influences throughout history on Tolkien's world. The illustrations and binding only add to the excellence of these books. A good addition for any die hard Tolkien fan.

This is a nice little book to understand some of the history behind the epic works, Lord of the Rings. Some of the references in this book are based upon myths or stories that do not have a clearly documented academic review. Despite this, the book is worth your reading time. Tolkien is an incredible author that wrote based upon strong historical references. I adore his work even more.

Great booK! Exactly what I anted DON'T PUT A STICKER ON A FLEIBOUND BOOK! **FACEPALM** Seriously! How to you get the sticky residue off?!?!?!

What kind of high intellect he had to have had to incorporate so much from so many different areas/legends into such readable literature.

There is a sticker on the outside of the book which I have attempted to remove but it looks like it could damage the cover so left it on as I bought it for a gift. Would have given 5 stars if not for this.

Received this fine edition and found to my absolute horror that a sticker was applied right across the embossing on the back, a sticker that was almost impossible to remove without damaging the leather. What's the point of a luxury edition if you're going to ruin it with a sticker? Shame on you, Amazon!
