Yes, this pole sucks and yes, I still gave it 5 stars. The reason? The pole, quite honestly, is good enough. Once you put the lure on it will cast and it does reel and it does work. I am guessing that if you are buying this toy, you most likely want your kids to enjoy fishing or they already do. Right? If so, then you probably already have a kid pole or are going to. I have twins who are 3 and they had a blast...so that they both could play I used one of their "real" kid poles and let the other one use the one that came with it...no complaints from either. In fact, normally when things are not the same, there is a huge fight. This time however, the fish was SO entertaining that they did not care about the pool. About the fish: its swims and its mouth opens (obviously to get the magnetic lure, which is definitely strong enough). Then, when you catch it, it starts flopping around. I just received it in the mail today and it is a big hit in our kiddie pool out back. Anything that can entertain 3 year olds for over an hour straight is a winner in my book. So, if you are contemplating buying it for the "fun" factor--do it.

This review was dictated by my 7 1/2 year old son: "This toy is the greatest toy for any occasion and I like how you can change the bait. Plus, the fish wiggles when you catch it, he doesn't only swim! Sometimes he swims over to the walls of the tub and he seems to eat algae off the sides just like he was a real fish. If you were thinking of buying a toy for any occasion, this is just the one to get." Parents' comment: for some reason, this toy is constructed without any waterproofing of the battery area, and the parents are expected to unscrew (two very small and easily stripped) screws to take apart and dry out the battery compartment between each use. This is totally impractical. However, as you read, my son absolutely loves it, so he gives it five stars. I would take off at least one for this bad design problem, but it does work as described and is a very fun bath toy.

This toy was fantastic. I bought it for my 3 year old for her birthday. We were able to set it up in a large whirlpool in my office area and she played with it for hours. I liked that the magnet was inside the mouth and that it was not as easy to catch (when compared to some of the other fishing toys) as it provided some good hand eye coordination for my daughter as well as giving her a sense of satisfaction/success when catching it as it was not so simple. Unfortunately, due to her not letting the fish go for hours and she dropped it numerous times on a tile floor and the fish no longer works even with a fresh set of batteries. She still uses the fishing pole which is also very nice as it allows you to release and roll up the line. Do I wish the fish still worked...yes I do but even having the fish no longer work it was still a fantastic toy. I blame more of my kids constant use of it and her dropping it as a reason for it no longer working than the toy itself being faulty. I would absolutely recommend the toy but with a warning that the fish does not like to be dropped on hard surfaces.

This seemed like the coolest toy for my 3 yr old son who wants to go fishing every second of the day. He was so excited when we opened it. Sadly he got to cast the line 2 times before the trigger to drop the line stopped working. It's not the end of the world but for the price I would have thought it to last more than the 2 cast in 2 minutes. Now I'm just hoping the fish itself holds up. I will post an update once we get some more use and see how it really does. 🤞🏼Hope it doesn't disappoint my boy even more!

Didn't even have this toy for a month and the fish stop working. Light turns on and will move if you hook it but the fish won't swim anymore just sits there.

This fishing set is great. The fish swims around our tub wonderfully. He has a swimming mode then when he is caught by one of the two lures (just a magnet) his fins flop in a faster mode which gives the illusion the fish has been caught. My 1 year old son loves it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was after its first use the on/off control failed to stay on the on position. My husband was able to take it apart and add a small piece of plastic to the switch to allow it to function. He was surprised there wasn’t water inside so it was made well enough to be watertight.

I am writing this review sitting by my pool within 20 minutes of opening this package. I felt inclined to do so as this is easily one of the coolest and best toys I have bought for my 3 year old son. I'd like to address a couple of questions I had prior to ordering 1. Does the reel actually reel? Yes it does! 2. Will it take forever to catch in a pool? No! It swims in a 2 foot circle! The fish is a very good size and the magnet is impressively powerful. After the fish is caught, reeled and the magnet removed, he stops swimming. Pretty cool. Also he doesn't start swimming until you put him in the water. My neighbor is an avid fisherman and I just found the perfect gift for his sons 3rd birthday next week! If you are looking for a fishing toy for any reason I couldn't recommend this enough. Buy it and watch everyone in your family become a kid again!

I purchased this as a birthday gift for my 5 year old granddaughter. She just loves it as do her 6 and 7 year old sisters. It seems to be very well made and works like a charm. This is the third day of playing with it off and on and the fun factor is still strong. And that was before we discovered it didn't even have batteries in it. Now it is even more popular! It can go in water without being ruined. The catching mechanism (a magnet) works wonderfully. This is a quality toy and has taken abuse and it still works. The winding mechanism for the fishing line has yet to get tangled or stuck, which is really saying something. I recommend it as a fun, quality toy.
