## Description

SUPERB TRIPLE DISC LIVE COLLECTION FROM THIN LIZZY S HEYDAY Formed in Dublin in 1969, two of Thin Lizzy s founding members - drummer Brian Downey and bass guitarist Phil Lynott - met while still at school. Lynott led the group throughout their recording career of twelve studio albums, writing most of the material. The singles Whiskey in the Jar (a traditional Irish ballad), The Boys Are Back in Town and Waiting for an Alibi were all international hits. Lizzy proper fell apart in 1986 following Lynott s death, but the band remain among the most respected and popular Irish rock bands of all time. This delightful CD Set pays tribute to Thin Lizzy by bringing together three of the finest live broadcast recordings made by the group during their heyday in the 1970s. DISC ONE features Lizzy s incredible live show recorded in Frankfurt, Germany in May 1974, equidistant from their September 73 album, Vagabonds Of The Western World and November 74 s Nightlife. DISC TWO contains their 1976 concert, this time recorded at Chicago s Riviera Theatre on 21st April, just a few weeks after the release of their worldwide breakthrough record, Jailbreak. DISC THREE concludes this marvellous live collection with Thin Lizzy s September 1978 gig, performed at Boston s Paradise Theatre on 5th September. DISC 1 1. It's Only Money 4:10 2. Good/Interesting for Hard Core Lizzy Fans

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 July 2020*

These are from FM broadcasts and so quality is not five star, but much of the playing is good and they are great curios. The picture on the front is the line up on disc 2.Disc 1 has a picture of Eric Bell on it. Great guitar player with and after Lizzy, but he doesn't appear on any of these recordings. Disc 1 has Andy Gee and John Du Cann on the six strings (which I had never heard before). They filled in after more left and before Gorham/Roberston joined. Really interesting as you can hear the embryo of the Gorham/Roberston twin guitar sound, but it's not fully formed. Worst sound quality and in some ways the most curious.Disc 2. Classic line-up rocking it. Has a picture of Moore on it (he rejoins the band on disc 3). Reasonable should quality and has a Robertson tack Blues Boys I'd not heard.Disc 3. This has a picture of Sykes on it but this is Moore/Gorham with Mark Nauseef handling the drums. The same line-up as the Sidney DVD. This pre-Black Rose and the recording mix is a little rough, but always a delight to hear Scott and Gary playing together. Often my favourite pairing (it varies with mood).I didn't expect the quality recording/production of Live and Dangerous, good job too. But for all issues with the recording/mixing getting these 3 gigs together for a reasonable price is good buy for a hard core Lizzy fan.

Boston 78 shows what Live & Dangerous should sound like.

*by M***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 June 2020*

A welcome addition to the live arsenal of Lizzy. The Frankfurter show is excellent quality featuring much of their early songs. The Riviera show is excellent and available in a number of titles. The real gem is the Boston 78 show. It shows what a great live band Lizzy were. Raw and live. No overdubs et which is supposed to be on Live & Dangerous. Great to hear the classics. Southbound almost sounds like it has keyboards, which of course they didn't use until the 80's. Phil is in great form and to hear his introductions to songs shows what has been removed from the L&D show. The guitar on Dancing In The Moonlight is stunning and so different to what is expected. Worth the price just for this show. Who knows where they would be now if Phil could have controlled his habits. What a band and what a live act. Shame that The Boys Are Back In Town is cut short and Baby Drives Me Crazy has a little interruption towards the end but hey the rest is brilliant. No Brian Roberton but Gary Moor on guitar and no Brian Downey on drums but Mark Nauseef who stood in for him on this tour...as can be seen on the Live '78 dvd from Sydney.

Worthwhile radio show release- three and a HALF stars

*by B***D on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 October 2020*

Firstly, some people seem to have unrealistic expectations as to the likely sound quality of a 40+-year-old (possibly fan-taped) radio recording. These are NOT up to the standard of an official live recording and if you want that then only buy official albums. They are all perfectly listenable if you bear in mind their age and source. As these are radio shows they’re all edited to about 60 minutes each.CD1 is the very short-lived 1974 Lynott/Downey/Cann/Gee lineup which lasted only one truncated German tour. You can hear the genesis of the twin lead guitar attack here but apparently Cann and Gee only got two days’ rehearsals and it shows. Very interesting for historical reasons but not a great show- well, it’s OK. The sound would rate a (by 70s standards) ‘very good’ rather than excellent, Lynott’s vocal is high in the mix and the guitars sometimes too low.CD2 is the ‘classic’ Lynott/Gorham/Robertson/Downey band and a very good show, the sound is clear but marred by some distortion on the sibilants in places.CD3 is Lynott/Gorham/Moore/Nauseef from 1978 and hard rocking if a little unsubtle and lacking in light and shade, Moore takes most of the solos and to my ears is overplaying rather. Nauseef does a creditable job but is no Brian Downey as the opener Bad Reputation demonstrates. The sound has two dropouts but is otherwise very good.Probably for the dedicated Lizzy enthusiast only but worth picking up if you enjoy ‘warts and all’ live shows.
