Q: is it good for sketchbooks?

I have used it for writing and adult coloring books...I think it would be suitable for sketchbooks. I also use it just for a stable place to put things on my lap...TV dinners, etc. It is very useful to me. I hope this helps you.

The surface is plastic which makes it easy to clean and it is a strong product so it will last a long time. We also have another great option which is the MyDesk (linked below). There is more surface area to create his drawings and it also includes to storage wells for holding this drawing pens, pencils, or markers. So depending on the age and height of your son, one might be better than the other. Q: Is there lip at the front edge so the computer doesn't slip off into my the lap?

No lip. This item is pretty small for a lap top. It’s a little bigger the. My iPad I bought it for. It put a strip of non slip tape so my iPad would not slip off. I don’t recommend this item.
