Simple, Reliable, and Perfect for a First Apartment Kitchen
We had one at home, but we bought the Aroma Housewares ARC‑743‑1NGR 6‑Cup Rice Cooker for our daughter when she moved out after college, and it has been the perfect starter appliance for her new kitchen. The size is ideal — big enough to make meals for the week, but compact enough to fit comfortably in a small apartment. It cooks up to 3 cups of uncooked rice (6 cups cooked), which is just right for one person or for simple meal prep. The best part is how easy it is to use. With one button and clear measurements inside the pot, she never has to guess. The rice comes out consistently fluffy, and the automatic “keep warm” function helps her avoid overcooking when she’s busy or distracted. Cleanup is quick thanks to the nonstick inner pot.We paired this rice cooker with The Super Easy Teen Cookbook, and the combination has been great for her. The cookbook gives her simple recipes, and the rice cooker makes it easy to prepare a base for bowls, stir‑fries, and quick meals without any stress. For the price, this cooker is a great value. Amazon made it easy to compare models and find the best deal, and this one deliver exactly what a young adult needs: simplicity, reliability, and consistent results. What We LikedPerfect size for a first apartmentVery easy to use — one‑button operationIt delivers fluffy, consistent rice every time, and the vegetables come out perfectly steamed.Nonstick pot makes cleanup simpleGreat value, and Amazon helps you find the best pricePairs perfectly with beginner cookbooks and simple recipesDurability, we had ours for years and we find the same model for her but different colorThe cover traps the steam and smells perfectly, releasing everything only when you uncover it.Things to Keep in MindBest for rice and basic steaming — not a multi‑function cookerThe keep‑warm mode can slightly dry rice if left on too longOverallThis Aroma rice cooker has been a dependable, beginner‑friendly appliance for our daughter as she starts cooking on her own. It’s simple, compact, and affordable — a great choice for anyone setting up their first kitchen or learning to cook.

Perfect Rice Cooker and Steamer--Best I have ever used! A detailed review follows...
First of all, this combo Rice Cooker and Steamer is just perfect for myself or when I cook for a guest. However, for testing purposes, I cooked a couple of meals for myself and a hungry guest! The results is that it does a excellent job preparing meals for two people and in about 25 minutes to 30 minutes time depending on what you are cooking in this combo pot.*The steamer part is enough for two people. The rice part makes enough for up to six people for the rice however. I make plenty of rice for me (one person) and place the leftover rice in tightly zipped zip-locked bags and the leftover rice lasts me up to six days in the fridge (I eat one of these packages of rice at night and pour gravy over it, a sauce or even stir fry etc).***PROS:+ Cooking RICE and STEAMING Veggies at the same time--This unit is made to steam UP TO 6 cups of cooked rice. The amount of rice that I placed into the bottom cooker section was 2 cups of uncooked (rinsed) white rice, which resulted in 4 cups of cooked rice which was plenty for the meal I prepared for myself and my guest. After our meal, I still had 2 cups of rice the next day in which to prepare yummy Fried Rice with veggies (one of my favorite dishes).***To steam fluffy and tender BROWN (Whole grain) RICE - I added just 1/4 cup more water to the pan and added the measured brown rice. I let it cook for a full 45 minutes. Because I added the extra water, the rice came out fully cooked, very fluffy and did not clump! The taste was great, so now I will be cooking MORE brown rice!+ How to steam both RICE and VEGGIES at the same time to be done at the same time for TWO people:1) I measured the rice into the bottom section and the water as shown on page 9 of this book.2) I steamed these veggies in the top section as shown on page 15 these vegetables -- ½ Cup of Spinach, 1 sliced Roma tomato (medium), 1 small whole onion sliced in thin slices, ¾ cup of baby carrots, ¼ cup of thinly sliced celery, 1/8 cup of chopped garlic.(I had prepared a very light white sauce before this) and at the end of the cooking, I added the sauce to the steamed veggies and this made a wonderful vegetable and rice dish (with sauce) meal and it was quite filling!+ Water - I added the amount of water that the cooker called for with the rice, however, I added good quality bottled water in place of the tap water.+ Time to cook both the rice and the vegetable - The rice that I cooked was done in 26 minutes and the veggies also in 26 minutes (I like the veggies tender). So for me, both were done at the same time. I do not like gummy rice or overcooked rice, and this rice came out fluffy!+ Making SOUPS, CHILIS, or STEWS (this will serve two people depending on how big the bowls are in each serving) - The night before I made Chili or Stew, I had already cooked my meat and it sat in the fridge until I was ready to make my Chili or Stew. So I then added all of my ingredients to make one of these. Note, it DOES not make much Stew or Chili however, if I make this just for me or if making lots of Chili or stew, I prefer to make it in a large 5 Quart dutch oven on my stove cook-top so there are more servings for others.*Update: Sept 19, 2014 - I spilled water on the instruction manual that came with the cooker and called the Aroma customer service and they are mailing me the same manual to my home to replace the one I spilled the water on at no charge! Also, I went to Google and did a search for Aroma ARC-743 PDF and found the full color manual in PDF!This is the best combo rice cooker/steamer that I have ever owned.

fits nicely in the cupboard with the rest of the pots ...
I probably will be able to come back and give this little gem an extra star after I have learned its ways. This is my first (EVER) experience with a rice cooker and with my brother's help (on the phone guiding me all the way) I chose this one as being about the right size for our needs and close enough to his 15 year old "National" (Panasonic) in looks, features, and response of reviewers. It is a darling size. It fits nicely in the cupboard with the rest of the pots and pans (which is a plus as we have way too many electrical appliances on the counters.) I suspect, though, that I may find it is a little small for our needs, but for the oddest of reasons. It actually makes plenty of rice for our needs, and in the end, it came out beautifully. But what a MESS getting there. It boiled over and some of its water/moisture ended up on the counter and on the lid. Some splashed all over other appliances on the counter. Since I got this in the hopes that it would be not only less mess, but, a set-it-and-leave-it arrangement, this was distressing to me. After it's little tantrum it was harder to clean up than having to stand over my gas stove to keep my rice from boiling over LOL.This little rice cooker is a 3 cup UNCOOKED (6 cup cooked) unit and I started ONLY with 1.5 Cups of uncooked rice. By my calculations I should have had NO problems! ... HOWEVER ... Let's rephrase this a little, because, to my ASTONISHMENT people don't seem to even NOTICE (let alone feel entirely miss-lead) that 1 cup (to the rice cooker) does not equal 1 cup... •••• 1 Cup = 3/4 Cup •••• Yes, that is right, the little measuring device which comes with it, is NOT a WHOLE CUP, but 3/4 of a cup. Still, I used their little cup and placed its contents in a larger glass measuring cup so that I could rinse off the rice, and thus, I know that I started with 1.5 Cups of rinsed rice :) Well below the (max) 2.25 cups that the cooker will accommodate.OK, now that we have the measurements understood, here it is "rephrased:"The MAXIMUM amount of (UNCOOKED) rice the the rice cooker holds is:... 2 1/4 Cups (2.25 Cups)•••• The amount of uncooked (rinsed) basmati rice I placed in the cooker: ... 1 1/2 Cups (1.50 Cups)•••• The amount of water I added to the uncooked rice in the rice cooker ... 2 1/2 Cups (2.50 Cups)(This is less than 2 x the water and slightly more than 1.5 x)There SHOULD have been PLENTY of room for the expansion of the rice (which there was) but the boiling process made the water escape the pot which would indicate that there was too much water for the size of the pot. Since there was fully 3/4 of a cup LESS (uncooked) RICE than the rice cooker could potentially handle, I dread to think what my kitchen would have looked like had I decided to cook a greater amount of rice!! LOLOn the OTHER HAND... even though about 1/4 cup of water escaped, the rice seemed not to suffer for it. So, NEXT time, I will try a little less rice, and a ratio of water that is closer to the 1.5 x rule of thumb that I have always used until these newer pots with the thick bottoms required more water so as not to burn the rice... :) Hence my statement above that I might be able to come back and adjust the number of stars... :)The rice was AWESOME; was not sticky; nice an fluffy. The pot cleaned up well (except the lid was a little difficult, but I waited too long before trying... I should have soaked it right away.)I would recommend this little unit, but only if you are a one cup of rice at a time cooker :) (for two people, maybe.) If I figure out what the water ratio is for different rices, I will come back and amend this.

Great little rice cooker!!!
I'm loving this tiny little rice cooker! I used to have a microwave cooker and it was pretty inconsistant when it cooked the rice; most of the time it would be undercooked and it always made a huge mess in the microwave. So I decided to try out this cheap, highly rated rice cooker and I'm so glad that I did. I usually only cook for two people, so I make about .5-1 cup of rice (uncooked). There is plenty of room to cook another cup or two, making this cooker ideal for feeding 1-4 people. It's small, so it takes up very little space on my counter, and the small size also makes it easier to clean. It takes about 15 minutes to make the perfect rice. I took the advice of other reviewers and used a bit more water than the instructions called for. This is definitely the way to go. The recommended water is not quite enough, but it is easy to figure out the correct amount (only took me two times to get it right, and even when it wasn't right, the rice was still decent). I also took the advice from people saying to turn it off when it is done cooking. I have not tried leaving it on yet, so I'm not sure if that would ruin the rice or not. Now my favorite part.... the steamer!!!! I love steamed vegatables, and now I can steam them at the same time that my rice cooks!! I was skeptical at first.... but I tried some carrots and broccoli in there the first time I used it, and they were steamed to perfection! What a great idea! It's less work, less dishes to clean, and it steams it perfectly.I would recommend this for anyone who wants a cheap but fantastic little rice cooker. Great for singles or small families. Cooking the rice is very quick and easy with minimal work, and cleaning the cooker is quite easy as well (no burnt stuff on the sides that would require scrubbing or soaking). And let's face it.... the price is hard to beat!UPDATE: I've been using this cooker for about a year now. I have seen no decrease in performance since I bought it. I use it about twice a week, and it is one of my favorite kitchen appliances. To elaborate on the first review I left.... yes, leaving it on the "warm" setting after the rice has finished cooking will dry it out a bit. Just unplug it once it has finished cooking, or just eat it right away. If you insist on keeping it on the "warm" setting, add 2-3 more oz of water at the start. I have also tried many veggies in the steamer, and they all turn out great! Carrots, beans, broccoli, peppers, peas, corn, cauliflour, the list goes on. And all of them turn out so well. I will use this thing until it breaks!

Exactly what I was looking for.
I use this rice cooker 3-4 times a week. It saves SO much time and is probably easier to clean than any other appliance. I've cooked dozens of different types of rice/pasta and have never had any major issues with the final product.- There's only one switch (the resting position while plugged in automatically "WARMS" the contents, and when the switch is turned on it boils the water), so you'll obviously need to play around with the amount of water you use with different types of rice/pasta to get it perfect.- It brings water to a boil faster than a normal stove-top which shaves a few minutes off the cook time.- The steaming tray is effective and works exactly like any other steamer.- There's no audible timer. There's an internal timer that automatically switches the cooker from "BOIL" to "WARM". I find the timing to be pretty accurate and does a good job of not over-cooking. Again, it's a simple appliance so I recommend monitoring your food the first couple times you use it in order to judge the timing.- White rice seems to cook better than brown rice. I haven't mastered the ratio of brown rice to water yet...it normally comes out a bit firmer when you use the typical 2:1 ratio I use with water and white rice.- I've cooked couscous and shredded canned chicken more than anything and it comes out perfect every time. Just bring two cups of water and a splash of olive oil to a boil, add contents, wait for it to boil, unplug the cooker, then let the pasta set soak up all the moisture. It takes about 8 minutes from the time I plug it in to the time I'm done cleaning it.** The ONLY negative thing I can say about it is the lid sometimes requires a little bit of scrubbing during cleanup. If you fill the cooker up too high, you might see some bubbles boiling out of the steam hole on top of the lid. The bubbles sort of spread out along the rim of the lid and will leave a residue that might require some elbow grease. **Overall: This is probably the best purchase I've made for my kitchen. The only thing I use more is the microwave, but for making a quality meal in less than 10 minutes makes this a solid investment for cost/health conscience people like myself. Highly recommend!!!

Steamer basket is poor quality although cooker works
I have a difficult time rating this rice cooker. It makes great rice and steams well. Unfortunately, the first time we steamed broccoli one of the handles on the steamer melted all over the counter then broke off. I unscrewed the other handle and will use without handles - although that’s a bummer!

Still the most reliable part of my meal prep after three years!
I originally picked up this Aroma rice cooker back in 2023 because I was tired of wrestling for burner space on my stove, and it has honestly become one of the most used tools in my kitchen. After three years of near-daily use, the durability has really impressed me; the non-stick coating on the inner pot is still holding up beautifully for the most part (one tiny scratch as seen in the photos) and the unit itself feels just as sturdy as the day I unboxed it. What I love most is the sheer efficiency it adds to my routine. Being able to set 6 cups of jasmine rice to cook while simultaneously steaming a tray of fresh vegetables in the basket on top is a total game-changer for my meal prep.It handles the cooking power perfectly, delivering fluffy rice every time without that annoying burnt crust you sometimes get with cheaper models. The ease of use is its biggest selling point—there’s no complicated timer to program; you just hit the switch and the built-in sensor takes over, automatically flipping to a "warm" setting once the water is absorbed. This "set it and forget it" simplicity gives me total peace of mind while I’m busy finishing the rest of dinner. For the value, it's rare to find an appliance that lasts this long and works this consistently. If you're looking for a versatile kitchen workhorse that frees up your time and your stovetop, I can’t recommend this one enough.

Love It
I LOVE this rice cooker. First off, it's freaking adorable. I keep it on my counter because it seriously gives me the warm fuzzies. I am a single person and spent a long time searching for something affordable and not for a family of 12.I've used it at least once every single day for the past 4 months for my morning oatmeal. It's so nice and easy to press the button and go shower or whatever. In regards to the bottom sticking issue, I have recently found waiting about 10 minutes after it clicks to 'warm' lets the bottom layer cool off and moisten so it easily releases with the included paddle. For rice it works great. Follow the instructions and everything will be okay. Allow it to rest after it switches to warm for super easy to scrape results. If you are super hungry, open right away and devour scrumptious rice. Let bottom layer soak in sink, it will clean right off. Yes, if you make larger quantities, molten hot water squirts everywhere. This does not bother me, I simply wipe it up.The steamer works like a charm. I usually just put water in the bottom and veggies in the top. If you are some kind of kitchen timing savant, go ahead and put rice in the bottom and then poach salmon and steam asparagus spears in the top so they are all done at the same time. This is a simple unit that brings whatever inside to a medium boil and then flips to warm when most of the water is evaporated because it gets hotter and triggers the thingy inside to pop. Keep adding water and it will go forever. Do with this what you will. It will take a little practice to get things the way you like them, like with any appliance.I religiously use plastic only for cooking and cleaning and the teflon coating is still good as new.For the price this is a really good buy. I recommend this product! :D

Great Rice Cooker
We've been using this for several months now, and although I haven't had the opportunity to use its other features, it does the job of rice cooker very well. Exactly like the basic Walmart model I used to have, fill the scoop with water twice for every time you filled the scoop with rice, assemble and turn it on. It's easy, if I put the rice on before I start cutting veggies for stirfry then it's done before I am, and it the removable parts clean easily in the dishwasher. I only put the bowl on the top rack as I've seen a few reports of it warping, but the lid always goes on the bottom and the scoop/spoon go wherever they fit when I'm loading. Everything survives and comes clean easily! The only thing I would say to watchout for is spray during the cooking process. I'm used to some startchy rice water escaping through the vent hole in the lid on a ricecooker and I always set it on a kitchen towel anyway to avoid a mess on the counter, but this particular model requires me to use only my longest towels and arrange them strategically. The vent hole ejects stray rice water forward nearly a foot, and not only does this result in a messy counter, it stings when it gets you as you're cooking nearby!
