What you will get from an SSD is additional shock resistance. Please be also aware that power consumption of SSDs when writing is much higher than with HDDs so depending on the type of SSD you can only operate it with the external battery attached. **Q: Is the provided 500gb drive and ssd or hdd?** A: For the ND2901 the 500GB drive is a HDD. **Q: If you backup a half full card, and later backup that same card when it is full (er), does this device understand how to update the backup?** A: Yes with 2 conditions: One is that the "auto-copy" feature is not on. Second is that the card was not placed into a computer (or card reader attached to a computer). Instead of spending an hour or longer downloading cards after a shoot, I can download them as they fill up during free moments during a shoot. This image tank is highly convenient and fast, and the ability to copy and verify files as they are being transferred gives me peace of mind. Cards can corrupt, or you can lose a card on a shoot. Having a backup before you even leave the venue can serve as extra insurance that your data is safe. This is NOT a safe excuse to reformat your cards before verifying that all the data is present; this image tank does not allow you to view photos from the device. While I am extremely pleased with this device, I am looking forward to something similar that has an SSD, easily replaceable battery, and a better joystick/selection interface. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Great device and definitively worth upgrading from previous models *by F***E on Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2014* Finally nextodi has released an image tank that supports fast copy of SD card (3 times faster that on previous models)I'm also very happy that they are now supporting USB3 for very fast download to the PC. According to specs battery life should also be much better, partially due to faster copy times. These improvements make it definitively worth upgrading from Nd2700 or ND2730! There's onA small point on the down side which is the power supply which does not fit into Swiss outlets....and the alternative requires using an UBS3 cable which is not convenient to take with you when traveling.....a simple microUSB plug for chairing instead of the proprietary one would have been the better und more universal solution.
