Great product
These are great knifes. Fit and finish is great and these balance well in the hand. The blade holds an edge and is durable enough to clean a deer just fine. This is a knife you can hand down for generations.

Unassuming lightweight class act.
The Pathfinder is a great mid-size knife with a 5-inch blade that weighs a mere 4 1/2 ounces. It is plenty of knife for most of the tasks you might encounter camping and hiking. It works well for fish cleaning, does fine as a hunting knife if you know your business, and has a handy, easily controlled blade that is very versatile. The handle is a good fit for mid-to small sized hands, but still works in bigger paws as well. The guard keeps fingers off the blade but doesn't interfere when you want to choke up for finer work or to brace your thumb on the spine of the blade for more powerful push cuts. Place your index along the spine towards the blade tip for precise detail cuts. The Pathfinder is a great knife because it offers excellent capabilities for its weight, has a low entry price, holds an edge well, is easy to sharpen and maintain (stainless steel, aluminum, and phenolic), and is simply a knife you come to appreciate more with use. Between my wife and I, we have 4 or 5 of them. Ultra-light backpackers are always pulling out the postal scale and weighing everything to the nearest 10th of an ounce. As the most essential tool, a knife is not something you want to skimp on. The leather sheath adds additional ounces, but the svelt, capable Pathfinder is a sensible investment in both utility and bad-breaks insurance when things don't go as planned. It is worth its weight in gold in the backcountry. The other great thing about the Pathfinder is the company that makes it. Buck produces a very good product for a fair price. Their blades are predictable, reliable, and reasonably priced. They deliver excellent bang for the buck, round for round and pound for pound. You can't really put a price on that reliability when you are dependent on the few ounces you carry on your back or on your belt. Pathfinder = woods savvy.

Incredible Knife
First and foremost, one has to appreciate the value in this knife; it has a 5 inch, full tang blade with excellent fitting on the aluminum tang, pommel, and phenolic handle. Likewise, Buck's 420HC blade reaches a superb RC Hardness of 58, while offering a very high level of corrosion resistance. It came razor sharp and has proven to have above average edge retention (I think it compares favorably to 8cr13mov from the likes of Kershaw and CRKT). It is also very easy to resharpen and has an excellent blade profile for any field tasks. All of this comes for under 50$, and there is really no equal competitor in this price range, or above it for that matter. When it comes to my personal experience with it, the blade has performed far above my expectations. No more than 3 weeks after I purchased it, I shot a blacktail deer during hunting season and used this knife to gut it and skin it. After all was said and done, the blade was still sharp enough to cut paper (and almost arm shaving sharp!). It cleaned up super easy with just water, showed absolutely no signs of damage or wear, and touched up back to razor sharpness in a few minutes. As mentioned earlier, the clip-point blade profile was perfect for both gutting and skinning, and I think the blade length is the perfect balance in regards to amount of working edge and control-ability. I would highly recommend this knife, both for a beginner and even an experienced knife-user who simply wants a very effective working knife that will last forever.

ive had one for many years best hunting knife ever
this thing is by far the best hunting knife its long and thin making it good for filleting skinning gutting. now i use this as my gutter and if you know hunting ringing the hole is very easy with this knife perfect length and width, overall this knife is the i can do everything knife with no issues and i wouldnt recommend any other knife thats not built with this knifes shape.kinda hard to tell but it is so close to being a fillet knife shape but with a small bowie knife kinda feel to it

Great knife, report to amazon if you don't get a sheath
Several reviews were complaining about not getting a sheath or getting "a cheap chinese crap". REPORT THIS TO AMAZON IMMEDIATELY! It's possible you chose a bad seller but mine in fact comes with a sheath. I saw the reviews talking about the sheath and didn't really care. As it turns out mine came with quite a nice sheath. It came in the factory box from buck and the sheath is from buck. AMERICAN MADE. Its actually the best sheath I've gotten with any knife and it increases the value of your purchase. As far as the knife goes, I really like it. I got it yesterday and used it at work today. Thick blade, one of the sharpest knives I've ever gotten with a deep and razor edge toward the front/curve. It's worthy of being a show piece, its really good looking, but although durable its not gonna stay pretty if you work with it. I already dinged up the pommel because I was carrying it in back pocket. I actually think this will be my EDC knife and I'm done with folders after only one day. I just get way more blade and way more handle and more control and precision out of this type of blade. Will probably get a horizontal sheath though, the sheath it comes with is vertical and kind of thick. I bought this knife on impulse mainly because it had good reviews despite the sheath complaints and I don't regret it.

UPDATE: I guess it was sharp enough.
UPDATE 11-16-2015 : While I cannot get this knife to "feel" as sharp as the other Bucks I have... I had the occasion to use it somewhat on my first deer recently. Though I boned-out most of that deer with a Havalon Piranta replaceable scalpel blade type of knife... I needed something tougher to get in-between some neck vertebrae to remove the head of the deer. Mostly because I'm newer to this, I'm sure. The shape of the 105 lends itself well to that task. If I remember right I also used this knife to cut off the backstraps of the deer since you must follow along the vertebrae to where they connect with the ribs dragging the blade somewhat across (though parallel with) the bones and didn't want to try doing that with the scalpel bladed knife. Also in kitchen work this knife seems to work very well at butchering meat when precision is needed. I did not use this knife for the skinning of the deer (so I cannot comment on that, though I now believe it will work fine for that) and only used it to remove the backstraps and neck muscles. I can definitely state that the shape of the blade lends itself well to removing the muscles from the bone... in the dark of night...under the light of a headlamp...all by yourself... with coyotes howling not too far away. -=-=-=- I don't understand it. I just CAN NOT get this particular knife sharp enough to where I'm happy with it. I bought it because several YouTube'rs and many of the other reviewers on Amazon commented on how it's a great knife for field dressing a Deer. And that very well may be... but I can't get this knife to that wicked degree of sharpness which I have been able to get my BUCK Paklite Skinner, my Buck OmniHunter, and my Buck Paklite caper to. On those other 3 knifes it was super easy to make them wicked sharp. There's something about this "pretty" metal where it just doesn't want to get that last little bit of sharpness that would make me happy with it. The YouTube'r specifically mentioned that the shape of the blade and it's length and that it's not too wide is what he appreciates about it when using for field dressing. IT's an absolutely gorgeous looking knife... but whatever. I've literally utilized 7 different sharpening tools on this knife and just don't get results I'm happy with. I'm wondering if perhaps on their Amazon store they sell their B-grade products? Anyhoo... I've since then acquired a Havalon Piranta I put in the pack for field-dressing and then acquired a Buck 622 for my hip. I love the 622. It was almost as sharp as I wanted it... just a few passes across a Smith's Carbide tip followed by gentle passes thru the Ceramic and the 622, just like the OmniHunter, and the Paklite Skinner (small) and the Paklite caper.. the 622 became evil sharp no problem. And the 622 has serrations near the beginning which have proven super useful. So oh well... the 105 will just stay in the car I suppose. Hope you all have better luck with yours.

probably the best hunting knife under 200 bucks
A real classic, probably the best hunting knife under 200 bucks! It will do anything that have to be done while hunting, fishing or hiking : Excellent for cleaning prey up to elk or moose; quite good for cleaning fish (102 is a bit better for small trout or the like and Case 379 is even better); can be used with no problem for small camp chores; make an excellent knife for food preparation and can be used with confidence in a survival situation (any good quality knife could do that if you have the know-all). A comment a bit silly but the look of that knife is really great! Being made of hard smooth material, the handle could be a bit slippy with blood or slime but the little guard make it safe enough to prevent any bad cut.. It keep a real good edge and it's easy to restore it with a ceramic or diamond stone (I never use caborundum or carbide things that are far too agressive). It is not a knife for Rambo guys or destruction specialists but it will not let you down if used as a fine knife is intended (like NOT batonning 10'' logs). The closest competition come from Case 381 (also made in USA). Kabar 212321 (which is made in Taiwan) is a close competitor but not on par with Buck or Case (by the way, knives made in Taiwan are far better than those made in China : Dozier knives are first class).

How can you not love the Buck brand
I got this as my first hunting knife as I wanted something to dress small game and fish, with the ability to do something larger down the road. Knife feels very robust and I hardly notice it on my hip when hiking/camping, and the leather sheath is very aesthetically pleasing too. Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a small and functional fixed blade knife
