Defective Content-No standard or TAB notation
I agree with Farley and his review above; there are elements of this book, and this whole 'Progressive' series that are seriously flawed. Throughout the beginning of the book it mentions standard notation and tab notation throughout the book, however when you go through the book, guess what? No standard music or tab notation. For a reader like me, that sacrilegious. And for students wanting to get their reading chops developed, this is a massive flaw. All examples of arpeggios and scales are based on the fretboard diagram, no standard/tab notation. Another flaw, although minor is Example #55, Dm7 arpeggios over 2 octaves; it's over 2 octaves alright, but you're going to have to go out and buy yourself a 6 string bass, because that's the fretboard diagram given; a 6 string bass fretboard. Fair enough, most bass players will be able to figure out the remainder of the arpeggio based on the 5 string, but it's a big mistake by the writers/publisher. If I picked it up, why didn't anybody else. Next. Appendix III Scales and Key Signatures. Good luck trying to learn anything from this section, because it's completely blank. You will need to either buy yourself another 5 string bass instructional book, or just do a Google search for Scales and Key Signatures. If you want to really get a handle on 5 string bass playing from a decent instructor have a look at: Scales and Modes for the 5-String Bass by Brian Emmel. Spend a few months with this book and your will rock any stage/studio situation. Thank you. 5-String Bass Guitar Lessons for Beginners: Teach Yourself How to Play Bass (Free Audio Available) (Progressive)

a failure
The LTP company is a very good house; they have published dozens of good books dealing with the learning of several instruments. However, we bassists got the short end of the stick: most of the bass books from this editor are penned by a Stephan Richter, an author whose methodology leaves everything to be desired. Such is the case with this book-- The 5-String Bass. It is nothing but a dry collection of BORING exercises without ANY contextualization at all! There isn't a single song for you to accompany in the book, not even an excerpt of one. It is just scales and arpeggios. True,we all need them, but that's not the way to do it. The "author" has a degree in classical cello, so you know what I'm taking about. I took a look at some of his other books in a library and it's the same thing. So dear fellow bassist stay clear of Stephan Richter

Excellent detailed book. Recommended.
As a beginner I am finding it testing to follow the book and examples given, but I will master it given time. The book is very instructive and includes everything a budding bass player requires.
